Oops moments

Hiya, I've just eaten a tangerine without washing the skin before peeling it. Got myself into a right flap about toxoplasmosis and listeria. Just wondered whether anyone else has had any 'oops moments' during a current or previous pregnancy as I rather selfishly have the desperate need to make myself feel better! So, any cases of absent minded unwashed fruit or veg chomping? Any devouring of foods on the forbidden list?

Eh?! Did you eat the peel?

TheConstantWorrier01 · 15/06/2018 13:55

I know, it sounds utterly crazy! The label said wash before use and I have seen on some websites (mostly from the US) that you can transfer germs from the skin to the inside of the fruit while peeling. If I wasn't preggo I wouldn't be worrying about this kind of thing, believe me! And no, I refrained from eating the peel!

I'm pretty sure you'll be fine hun. I've never eaten heard of washing a tangerines before eating it. So far I've eaten goats cheese. Brie and camembert. They were all cooked and red hot but it didnt even cross my mind not to. Opss.

I'm pregnant too and I'm just about to eat and unwashed apple and pre packed salad. The only think I would actually avoid is pate, and maybe unpasteurised cheeses, the rest is mostly histrionics I think.

I am generally pretty neurotic, but I have definitely eaten some unwashed fruit and veg in this pregnancy - I can't even imagine how you'd get through nine months without. And it would never occur to me to wash a tangerine, so I suppose I've been doing that most days! I am also pretty relaxed about our cats, though I don't go near their litter trays.

If they were cooked to bubbling then that's not an oops, it's in complete compliance with NHS guidelines!

Off to France next week though and I think I will probably have the odd bit of Camembert!

PotteringAlong · 15/06/2018 14:03

Have you ever got ill from tangerine skin before? Or know of anyone who has?

LemonBreeland · 15/06/2018 14:06

Firstly, don't read US websites, they are complete germaphobes!

I ate raw cake mix and runny egg yolks with all of my DC.

Just because a lot of people don't know this - depending on the age of your DC this may have been against advice at the time (but clearly worked out fine!) but now it's considered safe to eat all Lion stamped eggs, which is 90% of UK eggs (and I've never seen non-Lion ones for sale). I only point this out because a lot of pregnant women are still completely unnecessarily denying themselves runny eggs!

I'm definitely guilty of overreacting! I think it may come from growing up in a household where I don't think my DM ever washed any fruit or veg. Pottering I know I sound like I've got a one-way ticket to Looneyland. I think my hormones are doing bizarre things to my rational thought processes. I need to stop Googling.

aldaniti Have an amazing time in France! Hope you enjoyed the apple and salad!

Thank you! Yes google can be evil in pregnancy.

aldaniti · 15/06/2018 14:29

It sounds like I was being very virtuous with apple and salad but I also had cheese bagel and hula hoops to fend off the sickness!

Mousefunky · 15/06/2018 16:53

Never wash fruit and veg, survived without any major ills to this point so wouldn’t worry about that one OP.

I’ve had a fair few in this pregnancy. I handed out mock exam papers to my A level class that were for my GCSE students, have given students the wrong marked essay back and had a few incidents of realising I’d left important things at home and brought something else I didn’t need. Real baby brain going on.
