Hi, i have my first consultant appt on monday & i was just wondering if anyone else had pre-eclampsia in the past and had a consultant appt with next pregnancy.
Just wanted to know what to expect really!
Feeling a little anxious!
I'm on asprin daily to try and prevent it from happening again. My little boy was born at 36 weeks (induced very high BP). He's 6 now!!

Firstly, congratulations!

I had severe PE with my first DC, started when I was 3 days overdue so no worry about the baby in terms of his size but I was very poorly. Aspirin and closer monitoring with my second pregnancy - I didn’t see a consultant until I was 36 weeks, he just measured my bump, and checked my notes. I then saw my midwife weekly until I had the baby

I did have a couple of panics with swelling in the last few weeks and once went to MAU after seeing stars in my eyes in the shower but was sent home with reassurance. In the end I had a healthy 8lb DD who was two days late, and no dreaded pre-eclampsia.

All the best for a healthy pregnancy and baby (and you of course!) Flowers

^^ actually I DID see a consultant at 12 weeks too but it was a very standard appointment where I was prescribed the aspirin. So just the two consultant appointments at 12 and 36 weeks.

Thanks for the reply! Should have said I’m 20 weeks this is my first appt with consultant so probs they will just check me over.
Aww that’s lovely! Nice size baby aswell my first was only 5lb tiny!
Let’s hope I don’t get pre eclampsia this time, ive heard alot of people dont get it a second time so hopefully i dont!

Thanks again

Little squish! I bet he was just beautiful.

You’re doing everything you can with the aspririn, and I’m sure they’re keeping an eye on you - plus you know what to look out for, so fingers crossed you won’t get it again. I had a very normal spontaneous labour and vaginal delivery with my second, so unlike my first which was induction/epidural/forceps! He was 9lb 2oz and in the wrong position on top of the pre-eclampsia, I’d never have got him out Shock

I’ve just had my first consultant appointment for this pregnancy at 13 weeks. He talked to me about aspirin, discussed birth (I had the be knocked out for an emergency c section last time due to sudden deterioration with PE) He also organised for me to have an extra scan at 23 weeks to check the blow flow through the placenta and said I will have lots more scans after that to keep an eye on things. I also had OC so whether that’s made a difference to the plan I’m not sure. I was nervous but I didn’t need to be. Crossing everything I don’t get either again. How many weeks are you? X

Blood flow*

Gemmamarie92 · 09/06/2018 22:39

That’s good to know as i also had OC with my first pregnancy, thanks for the info! Do they look at all your notes from last pregnancy or do you have to remember everything ?
I’m 20 weeks

He had some information I think, he asked me about it though. How heavy my baby was which shamefully took me by surprise! Lol! Had to really think! He asked about my symptoms last time etc. I think he was also gauging what I knew about what to expect this time.

Have you had any sign of either yet? My consultant suggested it is unusual to get signs of either before 20 weeks so I’m hoping to enjoy the next 7!

Do you mind me asking how it was having your son at 36 weeks? Neither my PE or OC we’re picked up until I went into labour which caused a huge panic but at least I knew she was finished cooking. An early birth is the thing i’m most worried about at the moment.

Gemmamarie92 · 10/06/2018 15:23

Oh gosh I thought they would have had all the info 6 years ago is a long time to remember 😂 did they remember you had OC or did you have to tell them that?

I’ve not had any signs of either yet hopefully we both don’t get it! But I’ve had a really bad pregnancy so far the worst being my sickness , backache and migraines all 3 all the way through- I know migraines are a sign of pre eclampsia but I keep going the docs to check my wee and BP and everything’s been fine, I suffer with migraines anyway.

When I had my son I was in hospital a week before on loads of tablets for the BP but it just wouldn’t stay down, they gave me some injections in my bum for his lungs (ouch that was so so painful!) but luckily my little miricle was born 36 weeks 5lb and no intensive care ! He was so strong we couldn’t beleive it, the only thing stopping us going home was me! My BP wouldn’t go down a week after I had him I went home and god was I happy to go home it was awful I was 18 and looking after a tiny baby on my own, I thihk that worry’s me most having to stay in again and not being with my son at home! I was in hosp for 2 weeks altogether and it felt like months. But you soon forget once you get home!

But he was fine the only thing he had was jaundice so he did have to go in the incubator for a couple of days which wasn’t nice but at least I was with him they gave us a family room then and my partner was allowed to stay, funnily enough as soon as he was allowed with me my BP went down and we all went home! Try not to worry about early birth fingers crossed you don’t get it but if you do it doesn’t mean to say baby will go in intensive care mine didn’t and he was 4 weeks early which is quite a lot seens as they grow the most in them last 4 weeks Smile

Thanks @Gemmamarie92 it’s so helpful to hear all about your experience. Great that your son was so well. I hate the though of this one going in IC and also me being away from my toddler etc.

We were in hospital for ages too because I wasn’t allowed home, thankfully we also had a room so my OH and daughter stayed with me. I argued with them in the end because my BP had gone down and they said to me one morning I could bedischarged, left me all day then came to say they had maybe changed their minds and wanted to check my BP one last time! Surprise surprise it had shot up! I was furious and just said I would discharge myself on the grounds that being in hospital was so hot and stressful and that it wasn’t fair to take that reading into account! Lol! Luckily the consultant agreed I’d probably be “calmer” at home! The next day when the Midwife came it was much lower!

He had all the info I’d given my Midwife at the booking appointment and at one point he definitely had on the screen all my blood tests from 2.5 years ago and was reading all about my liver. It took nearly 18 months for my ALT to go back to normal so there was a lot to look at.

Snap re: this pregnancy. I’ve had horrid sickness that I didn’t have the first time. Seems to have passed now thankfully and now I’m eating everything to make up for lost time! Lol. I also had an ectopic scare at 7 weeks so I’m really hoping I’ve had a bumpy start and will have an easy finish instead this time! Honestly as sick as I’ve been I’d trade that for the PE and OC in a heartbeat!

I really hope neither of us get either again. It’s reassuring to find someone who’s had both and so far been fine! Long may it continue!
