Belly button piercing

I’m currently 22w3d and my belly button piercing is soooo tender, a little sore and a little red. I have a maternity bar in already as I thought that the little one was giving me the problem with my belly stretching. I’ve had it pierced for 6 years and really don’t want to take it out as I’ve had no problems with it before! Anyone else having this problem?

Just take it out and get it repeirced after baby is here if it closes up..

Do you think I’d be able to put the bar through everyday? Really don’t think I could cope getting it pierced again 😂😩

One of the girls at my ante natal had a belly button piercing and had a maternity bar put it but it stretched, ripped and got red then got infected and she was admitted to hospital with a serious infection practically sepsis and put on IV antibiotics.

Granted that's an extreme case but why risk it when you can remove it and have it re-done afterwards?

NinaCopita · 09/06/2018 15:42

@Bellabutterfly2016 this is a pretty unlikely case! (Also, sorry to be pedantic but you can't have 'practically sepsis' - it's either sepsis or not. It's a very specific illness)

I'm pg at the moment and had the same issue. I used salt baths and left it alone and it cleared up after a week and no pain anymore! I might just be lucky though. If it's very painful I would take it out and have it re-pierced. You could always call your local piercing studio for advice?

I took mine out about that stage with DS as it was itchy and uncomfortable. It didn’t close up even though I left it totally alone - put a normal bar back in about a month after he was born.

Mine started to rip so I took it out. It's now healed in the middle but both ends are open. My stretch marks are so hideous I'd never want it redoing though!

I have had mine done for 15 years and I haven't worn a bar in it for at least half of that. It's never healed over. I can get a bar in although i do have to 'stretch' it but there's no skin over any of the holes, I think it's just a case of the inside shrinking a little. It'll be fine you've had it done for ages

CrackingCheeseGromit · 09/06/2018 19:15

I’d take it out. I loved mine - really loved it, but took it out at about 20 weeks with my first baby and was worried about infection, so didn’t bother putting anything in while pregnant, and never got round to it once my DS was born.

I’ve had another baby since and the piercing still looks like something would go through it, I look at my lovely bejewelled bars in my jewellery box and remember wistfully my flat stomach Grin

My first pregnancy I had the same issue, gave up in the end and took it out, expecting it to heal (had had it pierced for about 4 years). After about a year post baby, I decide one day to see if it was healed, and I got a bar in it no problem. This pregnancy as soon as I started getting a bump I just took it out again to allow my body and skin to stretch as it needed to without having to deal with an obstacle like my belly bar! I think they are really tough to heal over as I’ve heard of people who have taken their bar out full time for years and years and it doesn’t heal!

I would just do what ever is going to make your more comfortable, so rather than fighting to keep something in, maybe just take it out now and then worst case scenario it heals and you have to get it re done. X

I managed to go my whole pregnancy with a normal bar in. When I was in labour, my midwife commented on the bar because she liked it Grin

If it's hurting you though, take it out. It's not worth it, you've got another few months so will only get worse

IncyWincyMouseRat · 10/06/2018 06:27

Some ladies pop a bit of fishing line through it. You can cut it long enough that it definitely won’t put pressure on the piercing and it’s flexible too. Obviously it goes without saying that you’d use brand new, clean line!

annlee3817 · 10/06/2018 15:38

I took mine out two years before I fell pregnant and both had closed up. During pregnancy they opened up again and after pregnancy I could get my old bar into the bottom and top piercing, so you may be fine taking it out.

Just an update:
I've taken it out and done some sea salt washes and it's sooooo much better! Still a little red but not sore or swollen. I checked today and the whole is still open as well Smile
