Help after sweep

I've had a sweep today and the midwife said that it probably won't work - my cervix is slightly open at one end but closed at the other. What exactly does this mean? I thought the cervix opened as one Confused

No there's too parts to your cervix it basically means that she couldn't perform a 'proper' sweep but she gave it a go .. booked in for another ? Your cervix may start to open by then although mine didn't x

I literally had the exact same thing today
Cervix is 'unfavourable' apparently

I am spotting abit tho so hoping something is ganna happen but doubtful!

How far are you?
I'm 40+2
She said she can try to do a sweep on Wednesday
She also said things can change very quickly so there is still hope 👍🏻

BlueRaincoat89 · 04/06/2018 16:44

@Pickledgerkingsareathing Thanks for clarifying, never knew there were 2 parts and my MW wasn't great at explaining it.

@user1499786242 The MW said that spotting and cramping is quite normal after but I've not had either. I'm 40+6 - got another on Wednesday too. Hopefully we'll be more favourable by then Grin

@BlueRaincoat89 I have such bad spd I can't actually tell if I am achy and crampy or if it's just the normal pain 😭
Deffo having some sort of bloody discharge tho!
I just want this baby out safe and sound now!!
My son was two days late so I just assumed this one would be about the same!!!
Come on babies!!! We want to meet you

ALS17081982 · 04/06/2018 17:43

Hi, I'm in the same boat!!! First sweep today at exactely 40 weeks. Midwife first said it probably wouldn't work and then when she tried said my cervix was too high to do a sweep but was softening. I guess that means it is closed? I've got to call tomorrow to book my 41 week appt but I'm going to see if I can have another go at a sweep maybe Thursday or Friday.

Did you both ask for another sweep on weds or were you offered?

user1499786242 · 05/06/2018 08:06

@ALS17081982
Midwife said to ring her on Wednesday (if nothing has happened before then)
And she could either arrange another sweep or talk about induction

Still no baby and I'm struggling so really not sure what to do ahh

BlueRaincoat89 · 05/06/2018 10:13

@user1499786242 Hopefully the bloody discharge was your show and things will start happening soon!

@ALS17081982 My MW just said they can try it every 48 hours so I booked in when I was leaving. I'd have another on Friday if they'll let me too, though they might start thinking that I enjoy them Grin. I have an induction booked for Sunday so just want something to happen before then!

@user1499786242 How are you feeling today? Will you go for another sweep tomorrow?

@BlueRaincoat89 How many weeks and days are you now? Do you think the sweep has helped at all?

I rang my midwife and I'm booked in to try for a sweep on Thursday evening when I'll be 40+3. I'm not sure how fast things progress and whether there will be much difference in only 3 days but I didn't find it tooooooo uncomfortable so thought I might as well go for it!

Bluebirdsky · 05/06/2018 14:05

Before your cervix completely thins out when you are in labour it looks like a long tube, basically she was able to get her finger into one end of the tube but as it's still long and closed she wasn't able to get right through to the other end and 'sweep the membranes' at the other side.
Don't be too disheartened though things can change quickly when you are due.

BlueRaincoat89 · 05/06/2018 20:45

@ALS17081982 No, don't think it did anything! Hopefully at the one tomorrow there will have been some changes and she can do the sweep more successfully. I'm the same as you, it wasn't too bad so may as well keep having them in the hope that it might work!

BlueRaincoat89 · 06/06/2018 13:36

I had my second sweep today - baby has moved down more and cervix is now open at both ends so a sweep could be successfully done. This was a lot more uncomfortable but the chances of it working are higher. I have another on Friday if nothing happens but really hoping today's worked. I feel crampy which I didn't after the first so hopefully a good sign.

Hi Blue, that's great news (apart from it being more uncomfortable!), I hope it works for you, let us know! Does the midwife give you a measurement if your cervix is open? Does 1cm open mean 1cm dialated?

BlueRaincoat89 · 06/06/2018 15:33

@ALS17081982 It's says 1cm in my notes, so I'm guessing that's what it means - she didn't actually mention it to me though. Does it say the same in yours?

OP posts:
ALS17081982 · 06/06/2018 15:37

I think that's probably what it means.

I've not had my notes come through in the post yet. We didn't really talk about open or closed but she said my cervix was 'too high' to sweep so I guess it was totally closed.

Did she comment on the likelihood of the sweep working? Did she have any tips for you? I'm on an exercise ball as we speak hoping that might help!

BlueRaincoat89 · 06/06/2018 15:50

@ALS17081982 She was a lot happier than Monday because baby is now 2/5 engaged and the inner cervix is open so it's progress - my baby seems very stubborn!

She said there was a chance of it working which is better than Monday when there was no chance! She said the chances of it working will increase by walking and having sex if you're up to either Grin

BlueRaincoat89 did the successful sweep feel any different to the unsuccessful sweep? Was it more uncomfortable?

BlueRaincoat89 · 07/06/2018 16:54

@ALS17081982 Yeah, it was a lot more uncomfortable but my cervix was posterior whatever that means! I've been having contractions since 3.30am though and been to hospital and I'm now 2cm dilated and cervix much thinner. She did another sweep whilst she was checking and that wasn't uncomfortable at all. I've been sent home for now until contractions become more regular/waters go.

ALS17081982 · 07/06/2018 16:59

Blue, that's so exciting! So are you convinced it was the second sweep that has started things going? I'm just leaving the house now to go to my second sweep! How painful are the contractions so far?

BlueRaincoat89 · 07/06/2018 17:26

@ALS17081982 Yeah, I think it must have been the sweep. Good luck with yours!

The contractions are painful but manageable. Just reading online about people who stay 2cm in slow labour for days or weeks which is disheartening. Really don't want to be induced on Sunday! The contractions are becoming less frequent too Confused

ALS17081982 · 07/06/2018 19:29

Hi Blue, my sweep was successful this time! Only 1 cm dilated but so pleased it was actually possible to do this time. I actually found this second one less uncomfortable, I think perhaps because my cervix was so hard to reach the first time. Let me know how you're going, fingers crossed contractions pick back up!

BlueRaincoat89 · 07/06/2018 20:39

@ALS17081982 That's great news. I was 1cm at my second too and then 2cm today with a thinner cervix so things moved quite quickly. I'm still getting contractions but they're still irregular. I also lost some mucus plug before which is another good sign. Hoping this baby makes an appearance soon!

Walk walk walk! really got things going for me! Good luck

ALS17081982 · 08/06/2018 12:35

@BlueRaincoat89 how are you feeling today? I feel normal, no contractions so I'm not sure anything is going to happen for me in the next day or two but I've got another sweep booked for Sunday morning!
