Doctors taking the pee - literally!

Okay so I've provided my doctors with two urine samples now and with both of them the results have come back as 'unable to test' and I must provide a 3rd one. It's just to confirm my pregnancy so I can get a midwife app. I'm 9 weeks and 2 days now so I really need to see a midwife soon but they refuse to give an appointment till they get a positive sample. Why wouldn't they be able to test the two I provided? Has this happened to anyone else? I never had all this fuss during my first pregnancy but I was at a different doctors surgery then. They're really starting to annoy me now! I've had 10+ strong positives on home tests so I'm 100% pregnant. What on earth is going on??

I’ve never known a GP surgery want to confirm a pregnancy! They usually say the opposite. At ours you just phone and self refer to the midwife.
No idea why they haven’t been able to test your sample, how odd!

TinyTerror1 · 30/05/2018 13:24

That is very strange. Most doctor's surgeries don't even bother to test these days, they just take your home pregnancy results as confirmation. Where are you? Is there any way you can self-refer to the midwife services?

BlueBug45 · 30/05/2018 13:31

OP are you in Scotland?

EllieRosesMammy · 30/05/2018 13:43

I'm in the North East UK, Teesside area. At my previous doctors they never made me do this so I don't know what they're playing at. I'm going to be seriously annoyed if I provide another sample and they 'can't test' it again, because I'll be due a scan soon so I really need to see a midwife! I'm tempted to just switch surgeries to be honest. There's a pic of my most recent Test, a very clear positive haha x

Speak to the receptionist and find out where the samples are sent or if they are tested at the doctors.

If tested on site then challenge them and bring evidence (your positive tests) and get referred.

If at hospital then get them to call the unit and say you will provide on site if possible and ensure no muck up from doctors happens again.

3x is ridiculous.

Never known a doctor to ask for a sample but again NHS England make it difficult for you guys.

mumofmunchkin · 30/05/2018 13:48

Can you offer to do a hpt at the surgery, so they can confirm the pregnancy and you can get on the system?

mumofmunchkin · 30/05/2018 13:50

Thinking back with my first pregnancy they did do a test - took a urine sample and rang me up a fortnight later to inform me I was pregnant Grin. By the time I had a second baby a couple of years later they had changed to self referral like a pp said.

I’m in England and have never been asked for a sample to confirm pregnancy, and I’ve been pregnant 3 times in 3 different areas (Midlands, SW and SE). It’s not standard practice in England.

TheGirlWithAPrince · 30/05/2018 13:51

i never had to go to the doctors, i just referred myself to the midwife for my 8 week appointment. then the MW tested me and booked my 12 week hospital scan.

Aw12345 · 30/05/2018 17:28

No I never had to give a sample either... Just phoned the surgery and they booked me straight with midwife around 10 weeks... She then referred me for 12 week scan. Midwife didn't do a pregnancy test either...

BlueBug45 · 30/05/2018 18:01

I self-deferred online to my "preferred" maternity hospital.

Bluebirdsky · 30/05/2018 18:20

How utterly ridiculous! Most GP surgeries in England refuse to test for pregnancy if you have had a positive at home. What a waste of time and money!
I would ring back and ask for a phone consultation with one of the GP's explain that you have provided two samples; it's not your fault that they couldn't be tested, you are certain that you are pregnant and you want to see the midwife. Failing that I would contact the hospital antenatal clinic directly and see what they can do to help you.

EllieRosesMammy · 30/05/2018 22:36

Thanks for everyone's replies! I've never had to deal with this before, just made a midwife app at my previous doctors with the receptionist and it was that simple. But these doctors literally won't give me one until they get a positive sample through however they test them. I think Ill just switch surgeries, I can't be bothered providing a 3rd sample, to wait 3-5 days for them to say they couldn't test it again. I asked to just have a midwife app and they say they can't until my samples can be tested and all they can do is apologise for the mess on. Not really good enough to be honest, it shouldn't be taking this long! X

Oh wow. How bizarre and annoying. How can it be that complicated to test for pregnancy?! When you have an operation in hospital they just dip test it as far as I am aware so what's the point if you can be 9 weeks pregnant and still not come up pregnant on their tests? I hope the new surgery are able to help you. If not, have you tried googling the community midwives for your area and calling them to see if they will book you in regardless?

EllieRosesMammy · 05/06/2018 12:46

UPDATE:

Finally got a positive doctors test result with the 3rd sample I handed in and got my midwife app for the 14th 😁 I'll be 11 weeks and 3 days at that point so hopefully they book my scan ASAP. I asked why I had to have them confirm my pregnancy before they would give me an appointment with the midwife since as other surgeries don't and apparently its due to the fact that they have had a lot of women lie about being pregnant and wasting their time, crazy! X

Glad you've got your booking appointment sorted. The referral for a scan should be made by the Dr at the same time so fingers crossed it comes through soon. That is crazy people lying about pregnancy! I can't think of any good reason for it 🤔
