Question about animal contact

Hi, I’ve read lots about how not to be in contact with sheep, lambs etc however I am meant to be going to family on Sunday and they have Alpacas that are pregnant or have just had little ones. Does anyone know how safe it is to be near them? Thanks in advance

Hey the risk of lambing sheep is they can carry Toxoplasmosis but as far as I'm aware it is only sheep, no other farm animals. Personally I think you'll be absolutely fine, just make sure you wash your hands properly after

Thank you for replying I’m not going to go near them really anyway but i’m just unsure. I’m 29 weeks gone and already had a fairly tough pregnancy so didn’t want anything else!

Goats too but not sure about Alpachas.

Just wash your hands thoroughly afterwards whether you touch them or not. I went to a animal place recently and it was sheep and goats and the advice was wash wash wash thoroughly after passing through and don't pet or feed them.

You are actually supposed to stay away from other farm animals giving birth.

It's not just toxo with lambing BTW.

Hey, yes it’s wet lambs (just born) and pregnant ewes that you need to keep away from. As well as Cows and calves but I think the risk is much less with them.

I’m 8 weeks pregnant and if it reassures you any, I spent the first 4/5 weeks of pregnancy lambing sheep simply because I didn’t know. Went do a scan last Friday and everything was fine.

Iswallowtoothpaste me too! Did you get an early scan because of lambing or was that just your 12 week scan? They did extra bloods to check for toxo with me, which thankfully was negative
