Phlegm in throat making me sick daily... 17 weeks

So I'm 17 weeks tomorrow and without wanted to sound like a spoilt brat I am really not enjoying my pregnancy.

I have horrid nausea and sickness for the first trimester, and now in the second I have been suffering with yucky mucus/phlegm in my throat which is causing me to vomit daily. I think it's caused by silent reflux (no heartburn but acid coming up to my throat). I have tried everything from gaviscon to lemon water and literally nothing helps. It just seems to be getting worse and is really preventing me from enjoying myself, I am greatful for this baby but I can barely bring myself to leave the house (so tired from lack of sleep/puking), let alone do the exciting expectant mummy things.

Has anyone else experience this before?

I’m 12 weeks and have exactly the same, it lasts all day and it’s making me feel terrible and like you I don’t want to leave the house.
Nothing works! I can’t even brush my teeth without bringing up phlegm. It’s so upsetting. So I’m totally there with you and feel your pain, I’m hoping it goes soon.

MochiBean · 27/05/2018 20:53

Oh @BumbleBex, I'm sorry you're going through this too! Glad to know I'm not alone though... mine started at about 12 weeks too. I am about to try a diet designed by a doctor to reduce to acid/reflux, I shall let you know if it helps at all... at this point I'm willing to try anything! Eek

I had this!! I’m 20 weeks now and I think it’s slightly better. I would wake up choking in the night, it’s awful. I had from being 4 weeks pregnant. I am hopeful that it’s going now so might be the same for you

MochiBean · 28/05/2018 10:11

@Penny31 that's encouraging, thank you! Fingers crossed mine won't hang around for the whole pregnancy then x

I had horrid reflux throughout pregnancy. Ranitidine from the gp helped but I took 4 appointments over the space of a few months to get a prescription. My gp is a "shut up and put up" type when it comes to pregnancy problems.

POAT NASAL DRIP

I've been suffering from this since about week 6/7 and it's just so disgusting even at week 12.

Its like my nose is on upside down and runs constantly down my throat instead. Its hard to swallow, I want to spit all the time and it worsens significantly with food.

I have been sick so many times and it's horrendous trying not to choke as it hangs from my face.

I've tried saline spray, allergy spray, salt water gargling, steam inhalation....just everything. Nothing works although chewing gum helps a little.

I don't know of anyone with this problem. Has anyone else got this severe vile symptom?

MochiBean · 29/05/2018 14:14

@Optomom this sounds very similar to me! I'm fairly certain it's actually caused by reflux, which is why none of the things you mentioned have worked for me either 😔

I can feel it from my nasal cavity though and no acid reflux. I might try Gaviscon just in case you're right. I'll try anything.

I'm on UTROGESTAN 3X a day so I'm hoping it's related to that and stop when I finish the course later in the week.

Its comforting to know someone else is suffering too. I feel quite hard done by that it's a symptom most people don't get 😳

If your chest or throat is burning it's a chance it's reflux and chemist can give you relief or ask for Omeperazole at doctors which is safe.

There is also a bug going round that mimics hayfever - I've just finished having it and took 17 weeks do disappear (I'm 29 weeks now)

Doctor tested so no hayfever etc but this virus is well known.

Optomom · 29/05/2018 21:15

Thank you.

I don't think I have those but interesting theories. I Googled the virus and it's true but there's itching and fever. I have none of these.

Still gives me hope this will stop soon.

MochiBean · 29/05/2018 22:07

I've always had mild silent reflux, which gives no heartburn what so ever, so I'm thinking my symptoms have just increased tenfold since falling pregnant. Darnit. Envy

@Optomom your medication could definitely be making it worse! Fingers crossed it'll ease for you when you finish the course! Xx

Thank you @MochiBean x

So, I've just got back from visiting my midwife. Told her about this and how it's making me vomit. She didn't have any advice just said it will hopefully pass soon Sad

Has anyone had any luck with phlegm improving?

If it's reflux (and it sounds like it really might be) I very much recommend going to your GP who can prescribe medication to sort it. It's likely to only get worse and you can end up (like me!) damaging your throat if you leave it untreated.

Optomom · 30/09/2018 22:31

So has it eased off?

Mine goes on and on......I'm 30weeks on Wednesday and so tired of this thick mucus drip all night and day but so bad with food (like an egg white being cracked at the back of my nose down my throat)

Its vile but I'm gratefull it's not as bad as 1st trimester when you could throw it at a wall it was so bad...coupled with morning sickness I was traumatised!

Such a cruel symptom x
