Quick question about requesting previous birthing notes?

I'd really like to talk through dd's birth with my midwife before d? arrives in the Autumn. I know it is possible to request my notes from last time, and that it will probably cost me to do so. Is it possible to be cheeky and get around the make a request / paying thing by asking my current midwife to get them on my behalf?

At my hospital you could pay for a copy to be sent to you or you could go in and look at them for free. Not sure whether your current midwife would have the authority to get them on your behalf?

I'M SURE UNDER THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT YOU CAN VIEW YOUR NOTES/FILES FREE. Apologies for caps there. You cannot photocopy them for free but you are allowed to view them in private so you could possibly photograph them on your phone or I think you are allowed to write out exactly what they say.

I've just paid for my notes yesturday (sp??). I was told I could go in and see them for free, but needed to pay for them if I wanted a copy.

Jbck I'm afraid that's not true. Hospital notes fall under the Data Protection Act, otherwise we could all request each others' notes!

However, they can only withold them if they think it would do you significant harm to see them.

I got a copy of my previous pregnancy book from 2 yrs ago straight after DD was born - it cost us £5.
However, we did enquire about obtaining a copy before she was even born and were told that the hospital can do copies. At the time we had to take it up with admin that operated right inside the anti-natal ward. 2 days after I'd left, they sent it over in the post. They even photocopied the additional notes that were in there! The book has come very handy now that we're expecting No2...I'm forever comparing test results and mw comments .

Lou I was getting my DPAs & FOIs mixed up but even under FOI I'm sure you can't request documents that relate specifically to another person.

No, JBCK, you are right. If there is anything that identifies an individual (other than in the course of their official duty) it becomes data protection.

Just requested my notes actually and they have asked £10.

I had to pay £50 for a copy of my notes! they can charge anything up to £50 for a copy, but you can read them for free and someone will go through them with you.
