Hair dye and pregnancy

Hi ladies

I'm not pregnant (yet!) but I have heard mixed reviews about dying your hair whilst upduffed.
My natural colour is dirty blonde, so I dye it a lot lighter. I'm worried that when I do get pregnant I won't be able to colour my hair and I'll have super long roots.

I know this is a 1st world problem, but I like to be prepared. Should I just dye my hair to it's natural colour in preparation?

I wouldn’t but I never altered my hair habits while pregnant. I even did the Japanese chemical straightening and baby was fine. But it’s a personal choice.

I had mine dyed at the weekend, but I go darker so I'm not sure if that makes a difference?

The only change I noticed was that my scalp was extra sensitive, so it itched a bit when the dye was on.

NHS says it is not thought to be harmful but some women prefer to wait until 12 weeks or have highlights instead as they don't touch the scalp.

I waited until 12 weeks to colour mine, but that was mainly because I felt so bloody ill that bending over a sink would have resulted in me puking up my toenails.

@SiolGhoraidh You have such a wonderful way with words Grin

Thank you ladies, think I'll go down the highlight route as I usually just stick a box dye on whole head.

I asked my midwife this the other day, she said it was fine but may not take aswell. I'm 26 weeks and having a tint, not sure if this makes a difference xxx

I dyed my hair in early pregnancy without realising it was an issue, made me feel sick then panicy after I found out that it could be harmful... As I did it all wrong, had a bath while I waited in an unvrntelated room... Not saying do what I did, I now always make sure the bathroom doesn't get too hot and steamy.. But no harm was done... The dye did not hold well so I'm back to my natural colour now, it's nicer than before pregnancy... One of few positives.

I've done mine continuously through out both pregnancies :) It's entirely up to you

GlamBump · 24/05/2018 14:37

oh its fine im sure. As long as you're not breathing in lots of fumes, so try to stay near a window or fan while its on.
The only reason they recommend not to is because of the skin being more sensitive, so maybe try a bit on the back of your head/scalp first?? whatever you decide, just relaxed and do what you thinks best :) x

I had highlights a few weeks ago because my hairdresser said it was fine - currently 38 weeks pregnant.

GreenGooner · 24/05/2018 15:22

I'm 13 weeks and just had mine bleached as usual (painted onto the scalp).

faitheloise · 24/05/2018 18:04

I had black hair and got it bleached to light brown when i was pregnant. Then died it back black before he was born. All fine.

There’s a lot more other things you need to focus on while pregnant like your baby growing inside you. You’re going to care more about your baby and his/her health than having long darker roots. Furthermore, I suggest you not to dye your hair while pregnant. It’s not safe for your baby, mommy!

starsuniteonceagain · 31/05/2018 07:50

I had mine dyed through both of my pregnancies and everything was fine.

Celebelly · 31/05/2018 08:03

I got my BFP yesterday morning and had a hair appointment that afternoon! I asked my hairdresser and she said as I get highlights with foils and the dye doesn't touch my scalp then it's fine.
