When does midwife get involved?

Am 9 weeks pregnant, went to doctor at 5 week and he said midwife would contact me! four weeks later i have received a letter inviting me to make a dating scan date but no contact from midwife, i just assumed midwife would be in contact straight away?

Is your dating scan around 12 weeks? If so this is also when your midwife will usually do the "booking in" appointment. If it's not I think I'd be on the phone to the doctors to chase it up. I somehow slipped the net this pregnancy and had to chase them up...

I had my dating scan at 14 weeks and didn't actually see the m/w until 16 weeks. (I'd also seen my GP at 5 weeks and she'd referred me to the m/w but it did seem to take ages to actually hear from the m/w...)

I think it depends on whereabouts you live as well, as to how quickly things tend to move.

Please don't take this the wrong way but don't get your expectations up about the level of m/w care you'll receive!! I was quite annoyed at the start because I felt that no-one was really interested and waiting till 16 weeks for the first m/w appointment did seem quite extreme...

Obviously if you have concerns or problems before your first m/w appointment, I would get on the phone to the GP straight away.

The dating scan will be very reassuring but it does seem like a long wait at the time!!

I am having my dating scan at '12 weeks' even though im convinced im further on than 9 weeks cos had a very light last monthly but they wont listen to me, i looked on the net and apparently 25%of woman will still have a period in their pregnancy and some even have them all the way through? am i wrong in believing this and just being gulible?

I had a light period when I was pregnant with DD. Apparently it was probably an implantation bleed...
Have a friend who had periods up until about 6 months pregnant! I would have been in a blind panic every month... but the baby was fine!

I think it depends on where you live and how busy the Midwives are! (there seems to be a shortage in a lot of places).

I had a booking in appointment at approx 9 weeks then scan at 12. You tend to get more care and regular appointments during the second half - but obviosuly varies enormously....

Also agree it depends where you are. I'm 21 weeks today with my first and have hardly had any contact with anyone (which I think is why I'm still finding it quite hard to remember I'm pg!) Was surprised to be given a double appointment by my GP really early on, but that was really just for form filling and to refer me to m/w - it did take a few weeks for them to get in touch, but less than 4, so I'd chase it up. Apparently, they normally do 12 weeks and 16 week checks here, but I was away when given my first appointment and couldn't reschedule until I was 15 weeks, so not much point in having an appointment the following week. So, basically, at 21 weeks, I've had one GP appointment and one m/w appointment, both of which have really been admin-related (didn't have scan though as wanted nuchal and had to go private). But have scan next week (alhtough not with m/w) and then have a GP ante-natal when I'm 25 weeks - think next m/w is early July. Have to say though, I don't really feel that I've needed to see them any earlier and they're on the end of the phone if needed - and I think at least it gets more regular after early July (hope so, as I haven't a clue what to do once it turns up in October
