14-Week Big Bleed - Similar Experiences?

Hi all,

2nd pregnancy here. History of bleeding this time around but none at all in my first (although did have anomalies at the 20-week scan = anxious). I had spotting at 5 weeks and more significant spotting at 9 weeks. Given early scan and all ok.

Had 12-week scan two weeks ago - all looking ok.

This morning (14-weeks today) felt like I needed to go for a wee. Got to the loo and found a significant amount of fresh red blood in my pants and still coming. I rang EPU and they were wonderful - got me straight in. Confirmed cervix closed (although struggled to see at first due to the blood) and then scanned me. Baby looking well, moving well and measuring bang on date.

The nurse beamed at me and said hopefully that was totally reassuring. However, I'm come home quite distressed still. I'm obviously incredibly happy that baby is looking well. But they found no cause for the bleeding and since midday I've bled through two pads and am working through third.

They said I didn't need to come back unless it got worse. But I'm really struggling that they couldn't find a cause for the bleeding. I'm frustrated that this volume of blood couldn't be traced. If there was a reason for this amount of blood at this stage I could totally relax and just get used to carrying pads around with me everywhere. But it all just feels very wrong and alarming.

Not sure why I'm posting, other than maybe hoping someone has experienced something similar (i.e. ongoing bleeding of a significant volume). I'm really hoping I don't come across ungrateful that baby is looking well; I am over the moon. I'm just finding the amount of bleeding, with no apparent cause, very difficult to reconcile.

TIA

I had a major bleed at 14 weeks too. Like you scan showed baby was all well and cervix closed. They told me after the scan it was due to a low lying partially placenta covering my cervix and is likely bleed again (which I did) so to monitor it if I did and call the EPU each time to be checked. Unless I was in pain or bleeding more than 2 pads worth in an hour then off to a&e.

I’m currently 33+4 watching my tummy love all over the place. However I have had bleeds through this pregnancy so spent a lot of time in hospital so I know it can be stressful!

Thank you @Penguin. Sorry you've had a stressful time of it too!

I did ask about low lying placenta (my mum had that when pregnant with me) but the consultant said it was too early to tell for sure until the 20-week scan as it can move and they're generally all low at this stage. I'd really hoped she'd just say that was the case and be done with it!

I had many, many scans with my first pregnancy after the 20-week mark and had been hoping very much to avoid that this time as I find it incredibly anxiety-inducing! So I was hoping a reason for the bleed would mean I wouldn't have to keep going in if it happened again. But she just said to keep coming back - it sounds like you had the same thing.

It is good to hear that all is well despite the bleeds, I just wish it wasn't going to pan out quite the same way. It's making be very nervous about going fully public with the pregnancy - which is a bit embarrassing as I'm quite obviously pregnant now!

Best of luck for the next 6.5 weeks and beyond! Flowers

When they told me about it being low they did say they wouldn’t normally tell you that before 20 weeks as it would likely move however as it was partially convering the cervix / the most likely cause they wanted me to know (prob so I wouldn’t go into complete panic mode at the sight of blood) mine did move by 20 weeks but it was good for me to know when to panic and also have the reassurance that the EPU were there to support me if I had any more bleeds

They also put me on the small gestational pathway due to a major bleed post 12 weeks. Although now he’s measuring almost 2 weeks ahead 😂

Fingers crossed you don’t get any more bleeds! Good luck with the rest of the pregnancy xx

I actually had five massive bleeds (all around period time) until I was five months gone. It was completely terrifying. There was never any explanation. But it was proper 'soak a pad an hour' type bleeding.

DS is now a perfectly normal if not incredibly noisy 5 month old.

SpaceRangerSpace · 23/05/2018 18:39

@Penguin - this really helps. Thank you and to you too! xx

@Madeline - thank you. I know everyone is different, but it really helps to hear that at least for some people it's normal and to be validated that the terror is real! Congrats on your lovely little one!

I had this too but a few times it was after intercourse and they also said I had a weak spot on my cervix my baby is now 5 months old

Hi hun hope you're ok funnily enough I am going through something very similar I'm currently 12+6 on Tuesday morning woke up and my knickers were full of blood and filled the toilet too no clots no pain nothing had a scan yesterday and everything was fine and no blood was coming from anywhere near the baby or in the womb area so reckon it's from around my cervix such as a small tear which was caused by sex on the Monday night we believe

Just wondering if you had a tear too as the cervix gets really full of blood

I am currently still spotting a dark red blood with some mucus too so still can't stop worrying about it until the bleeding stops but just keep thinking that the baby was lovely and healthy and everything was fine! Hope you're ok Op x

Hey I am bleeding at14 weeks too. Since Tuesday. They found a haematoma so there is a cause for the bleed. I believe unexplained bleeds are safer because if they know what it is that means theres an issue. I have to go back in 2 weeks to see if haematoma has shrunk and ive been told to rest. Just rest and see how it goes. 🤞 this is the only bleed for you. Very scary though isnt it!
