Just wondered if it's possible to have the odd glass of wine when you're pg and if so, from what week of pg??

I remember when i was pg with my DS that i had the odd glass of guinness and black but that was 17 years ago so i dont know if research has been done and recommendations have changed etc.

Since the beginning of february (when i decided to give up alcohol to lose weight) the most alcohol i've had is two sips of my DP's rose wine the other night.

Oh it was sooooo goooooood.........

Anyone?

oh the advice atm is to avoid it completely, esp in the first trimester

advice blatantly ignored by tutter, btw

RGPargy · 18/05/2007 12:40

Hmmmm well as i'm now 12+3 does this mean i can knock back a well earned glass of vino??

well, officially no

but my own opinion is that a small glass from time to time is utterly utterly beneficial to mum and therefore whole family

Soph73 · 18/05/2007 12:43

When I was pg with ds I had 2 glasses of wine a week and (so far) there doesn´t seem to be anything wrong with him - he´s now 4.7 yrs old. As long as you don´t go out and get totally blottoed I don´t see there´s anything wrong in the odd glass of wine However, I´m sure there are plenty of people out there who would consider me completely irresponsible!

RGPargy · 18/05/2007 12:43

I'm in agreement with you on that one Tutter lol.

hayes · 18/05/2007 12:44

I agree, and I think if you speak to the midwife she will say that the odd glass won't do any harm but just don't go on a binge! my midwife told me this anyway

PregnantGrrrl · 18/05/2007 12:58

with DS and this pregnancy, i avoided booze totally for the first 4mths, then had one or two units a week after that. And they are damn tasty units aswell!

RGPargy · 18/05/2007 12:59

Soph, although i do miss going out and getting blotto, it's deffo not on the agenda at this precise moment in time lol

I am thinking that perhaps on a saturday night, i could indulge with one glass of wine. Someone told me about some alcohol free wine called Fre or summat so i might go to Asda and try and find some of that. They said it tasted like the real deal!

lol @ pregnantgrrrl - those two sips i had at the weekend tasted like pure heaven in a glass!

MrsBadger · 18/05/2007 13:14

(for the record, all alcohol-free wine is minging. Best stuff if you would normally drink pilsner / lager etc is Cobra 0%)

thentherewasthree · 18/05/2007 13:20

i drank a small glass of guiness quite regularly. Didnt even like it but as i am veggie the midwife advised me to - for iron. Would have preferred white wine!!

Soph73 · 18/05/2007 13:27

RGPargy - I agree with MrsBadger that all alcohol free stuff is dreadful, must be better to have the odd glass of "real" stuff at the weekend - enjoy

RGPargy · 18/05/2007 13:32

Sorted then.

PregnantGrrrl · 18/05/2007 13:34

yes, booze free wine is all dodgy. Booze free Becks is alright.

Tonight is my hen night, so i'm having a can of beer before i go. Can't drink in public- always paranoid somebody will think i'm awful and have a go at me!

RGPargy · 18/05/2007 13:57

I've got alcohol free Becks indoors actually. I just never fancy it. Dunno if it's got anything to do with the fact that there's no alcohol in it or what!

Have a great time on your hen night tonight pregnantgrrrrl!!!!!

must admit i drank a couple of glasses of wine a week with my last pregnancy, or sometimes a couple of small bottles of bacardi breezer per week. i'l admit i was a bit down and really looked forward to it as a treat. my ds is fine and perfectly healthy(now 17 months old). however, i feel disgusted with myself for being irresponsible and think that i should have just done without it altogether. i'd never judge anyone for drinking on occasion in pregnancy, but im ashamed of myself for doing it now. my mum watched a programme about babies in the womb whose mother was drinking, the results were shocking.the babies were shaking and fitting inside the womb.if i had another pregnancy now, i would'nt touch a drop.

babygrand · 18/05/2007 14:16

I drank all the way through my second pregnancy. I wouldn't do it now, but at the time the advice from midwives was 'if it makes you feel better...'

RGPargy · 18/05/2007 14:17

Shaking and fitting from just one or two units of alcohol or from mothers who were binging and getting paraletic?

OP posts:
bubblepop · 18/05/2007 14:20

i don't know rgpargy. i don't know the full facts, but wish i did at the time.

RGPargy · 18/05/2007 14:28

Ah right, ok. I might do a bit more research....

glittercaz · 18/05/2007 15:34

sorry, not wanting to get into a whole debate here (I know there have been a few on this on mumsnet) but I really believe that a few units a week is not going to do anyone any harm - in fact, if you're happy and de-stressed because you're enjoying a small glass of wine, you're probably doing yourself (and baby) a favour, if anything! If you look at our mother's generation (no restrictions on drinking in pregnancy but no real binge drinking culture) or countries like France where they see nothing wrong with a glass of good wine/champagne per day when pregnant, you don't see resulting hordes of 'damaged' children! I do think the 'no alcohol' advice taking more into account teenagers who are more likely to go out and wasted and need a categorical guideline, tbh.

Sorry to bang on, I just think that pregnancy is worrying enough and parenthood is guiltridden enough without beating oneself up about the odd glass of vino!

Just out of curiosity - do people have the same view with cigarettes in pregnancy as they do with alcohol? EG if you think a few units a week is fine - are a few fags a week fine too?

foxybrown · 18/05/2007 15:36

Well, I would. And I have. And very nice it was too.
