Early scan?

Hi all!
So I tested last night (1 day before AF due) and this morning and have had 3 quite obvious positive tests. I rang my doctors this morning just to see what they suggest and she told me that if I'm not concerned about anything then to just ring the midwifery unit. I filled out a form and they called back within the hour and have scheduled me in for the 18th June for my first antenatal appointment. I've worked it out I'll be roughly 7 weeks by then. I don't know if this is the average time to wait? I've read a lot of people going for an early scan is this something I can opt for? How much is it? Is it necessary? Thank you all so much Smile

Hello. I had an early scan during my first pregnancy, I'm a natural worrier so wanted to check all was okay. Early scans aren't an option in our area on the NHS so we had to go private, I think it cost around £80. With my second I was a bit more relaxed so didn't go for an early scan. It is completely your choice, it's not necessary at all, just do whatever you feel most happy with.

I had my first antenatal appt at about 10 weeks and chose to have an early scan at 9 weeks to have the Panorama test.

Early scans on by NHS aren’t usually an option unless you have pain / bleeding or have a history of multiple miscarriages (3 or more usually)

You can have a private scan and I think there is usually good deals on groupon for those. Best time is usually around 8 weeks because you see a lot more. They can usually see the heartbeat from 6 but because it’s so early it’s hard to see much at all and sometimes there can still be issues following a healthy 6 week scan (personal experience talking)

@Muffin7 @PinkAvocado @PenguinChristmas
Thank you all! I may have an early scan a bit later on then just for reassurance! Smile

DH is keen to have a scan done earlier than the 12 weeks - I think it would give him some reassurance to have something to look at.

Has anyone had a 6 week scan - was it worth it? Or would waiting for 8 weeks be better? TIA

butlerswharf · 22/05/2018 16:31

Hi @Wowthisisreal it's personal choice but I think an early scan like that gives false reassurance because it's not until after 12 weeks that's the risk of miscarriage reduces significantly. So you may feel wrongly reassured by a six week scan.

Wowthisisreal · 27/05/2018 12:21

Thanks @butlerswharf - that is something I am worried about!

I had an early scan at 6 weeks due to bleeding and they could see a sac but no pole or heartbeat... it was awful. Went back a week later and there it was. I wouldn't choose a six week early scan for that reason! Could be too early and cause unnecessary worry.

Kate123cl · 27/05/2018 12:33

@Emma198 Oh no! I went for a scan on Thursday due to pain (4 weeks 2 days) and they couldn't even see a sac and now I'm totally freaking out :( I know it's probably too early but I'll definitely be having the normal 12 week scan now!

Sorry to hear that, @Kate123cl. Are you booked to go back? They booked me in at seven weeks to see if they could see anything then and it looks like a jelly bean with a heartbeat. Had my 12 week scan on Thursday and I was actually 13+3, so I'm 14 tomorrow ❤ I'm glad I had a scan with the bleeding but it was an awful week waiting to see.

Kate123cl · 27/05/2018 12:39

@Emma198 I'm hoping it's just way too early to see anything... they've just told me to let them know if I have any ectopic pregnancy symptoms but they didn't seem to be too worried about me.
Wow ok so you're further along than you thought! I wish I could skip to 14 weeks lol. Massive congrats!❤️

I thought I was 12+6 so pushed me forward 4 days :) i was gutted when my appointment came through and it was so late! I'm sure you just are far too early to see anything. They weren't worried about me at 6 weeks either when they couldn't see anything.

ArmsLikeMrTickle · 27/05/2018 12:49

Congrats OP!

For my first DC it was a textbook pregnancy so I was only scanned at 12 and 20 weeks. Sadly my next pregnancy was a missed miscarriage. The next pregnancy I ended up having an early scan at 6 weeks after some pains, then another at 8 weeks after some horrible bleeding. Thankfully all was ok, she’s 1 now. The 6 week one, you can’t really see much besides a little baked bean on a screen, but by 8 weeks she had little arm buds, I was gobsmacked at the change in 2 weeks!

Emma198 · 27/05/2018 12:52

Less than six weeks apart! Amazing! No wonder I'm shattered.
