When will I look pregnant?

Ok for those of you who don't don't me, I'm pregnant for the first time, 11-12wks pg(due 24th Feb.
Now my question may seem daft, but as all my friends who have had babies were all very slim to start with size 8-12 they have had lovely little bumps from about 12wk stage.
I am a size 20-22, and have quiet a few large lumps & bumps at best of times, I am wondering will I ever look pregnant? will I get a bump at all or will it be camoflaged by my fat?
Any fat girls out there, or slim girls with fat friends who can help?

Hi StaceyK. I'm pregnant and on the large size and was wondering the same thing and hoping that I will get a bump to prove it!

Staceyk · 10/08/2004 16:20

Heres hoping someone will come on and answer our question. I'm sure they will I have loads of faith in Mumsnetters.
I think I'll be really upset if I don't show, or if I just look fatter! This is a very wanted baby over 2 years of trying, so want to shout and tell the world, and look it.
Keeping quiet til scan (18th Aug).

Sorry Porker, how far gone are you?

Staceyk you're a day before me on your scan AND you due date

I don't have an answer i'm afraid but thought i'd tell you

Pidge · 10/08/2004 16:24

StaceyK - well I'm a skinny thing and first time round I didn't show so that anyone else would notice until about 5 months! OK it was winter and my clothes were not totally figure hugging, but even so!! I got fed up with my colleagues asking if I really was pregnant.

Can't comment on larger sizes and bumps. It is nice when it becomes obvious though - you feel like a proper pregnant lady!

Angeliz · 10/08/2004 16:25

same here pidge. People used to turn me sideways(shock] to check until i was nearly 5 months!!

lou33 · 10/08/2004 16:27

Firts time I didn't really show until I was 7m. Was still wearing hotpants until then.

Staceyk · 10/08/2004 16:28

Angeliz oo nice to know.

Although I'm not too sure on due date, yes my first day of last period was 20th May, which would mean due 24th Feb, but I am sure I conceived 25th May, which would mean 1st March.
I don't know if when I go for scan they will go along with date according to period, or will tell my size that due 1st of Mar, does that make any sense?

But are you both slim like Pidge? Angeliz & Lou33?
Where's a fat bird when you need one

lou33 · 10/08/2004 16:30

Yes, sorry I was 7st 12 when I got pg for the first time. This was 12 years ago.

saintshar · 10/08/2004 16:31

A good friend of mine was pregnant, and didn't 'show' at all - so much so that when she finaly had her DD, people were asking her who the baby belonged to when she pushing the pram!

Bur she is VERY big, and always wore very baggy clothes anyway. So i think it may depend on just how bif you are.

Staceyk · 10/08/2004 16:32

saintshar thanks the answer I was hoping not to hear. As I say I am size 20-22 and do have a big belly at best of times.
I'm thinking my fat is going to hide any bump

not very far StaceyK, keeping it quiet at the moment.

mrsflowerpot · 10/08/2004 16:41

I was a size 18 when I got pregnant with ds and I seem to remember I showed after about 20 weeks. I didn't put much weight on before then either, I just got a bit sort of denser and my tummy got harder. But definitely had the beginning of a bump when I had my 20 week scan.

saintshar · 10/08/2004 16:41

Yes StaceyK,

But my friend is VERY big. So mush so that she couldn't concieve for a number of Years, or so the Doctors say.

That is why i say it depends on how big. She is/was much bigger that a size 20.

Staceyk · 10/08/2004 16:45

Oh thank you Mrsflowerpot Saintshar, I'm definately feeling better now.
Think problem is because we tried for so long to get this far, and have absolutely no symptoms at all.
I really just don't can't believe I am pg.

Thank you all

Congratulations StaceyK.

I understand you want to 'look' pregnant, but you are, and will have a lovely bundle of joy to show off in the end - well done!!

Angeliz · 10/08/2004 16:54

yep afraid i'm slim too!!

My last period was the day after yours!!!

You beat me every time

beansprout · 10/08/2004 17:00

It varies for everyone. I think I have looked preg for ages, but was told at the weekend that I "finally do". I'm 32 weeks!

hana · 10/08/2004 17:17

I think for a larger lady the pregnancy doesn't really 'show' until later, and also that the weight gain isn't as much as well (that's got to be a good thing!) I am normally a 12 and really started showing with a proper bump that was obvious to strangers just a few weeks ago (am 21 weeks) It might be a while yet staceyk!!! but it will happen

monkeygirl · 10/08/2004 17:32

I had a baby 8 weeks ago and was/am that fat bird! If you're big all over the bump does show a lot later, but then it depends on your bump cos, big or small they are all different, depending on how your baby lies/water retention etc (in my thinner days with dd1 I didn't show until I was at least 6 months). Strangers started commenting on me at about 7/7.5 months but then I wore very baggy clothes even before pregnant so if you wear more 'body-conscious' clothes it will probably show earlier. I think some people suspected by the way they looked at my tummy but probably were worried about saying something just in case they were wrong!

Didn't know whether to laugh or cry though when my neighbour who I speak to regularly didn't know I was pregnant until I bought the baby home!

All pregnancies are special but I think your first one is when people especially love to make a fuss of you so just make sure you tell them, cradle and rub that bump and act like a pregnant woman! People are more likely to 'get' it then.

Congratulations by the way!

Chandra · 10/08/2004 17:36

I was a size 16 when I fell pregnant and up to 20-24 weeks I could use most of my 2regular" clothes. the tummy was not obvious until 6-7th month.

highlander · 10/08/2004 17:58

congratulations!

I think it depends on your overall bodyshape. For example, a friend of mine is probably about a size 16 but she's otherwise quite petite (5'2". Despite most of her weight being on her tummy, boy did she develop a bump quickly!! (and she loves it!)

On the other hand, my mum was about a size 16-18, a good 5'7" and carries her weight around her hips. We've all got long backs in our family as well. When preggers with my brother, my mum didn't look preggers until very late on.

Don't worry - it will happen, and you'll look lovely!

bunny2 · 10/08/2004 23:21

I carry all my weight around my middle (size 16) and have slimmish arms and legs. Consequently I look pregnant even when I am not. As highlander say, it really does depend on how you carry your weight.

Grizzly · 10/08/2004 23:37

I was a generous size 18 when I got pregnant last year, and I carry most of my weight round the tum (classic 'apple' shape) with relatively slim arms and legs. I had a definite bump from around 16 weeks. By the time I got to 24 weeks bump was huge and all out front. From the back I looked just the same as ever, but when I turned sideways it was like a total eclipse. The great thing was that the bump was solid and all my flabby tum disappeared. I could wear tight(ish) tshirts - my abs have never been so firm. DS was a big baby, 3 weeks early and 8lbs.

By the way ds is now 11 months and after 2 months at weight watchers I've just got into size 16 jeans. Sorry to say the firm abs have not re-emerged.
