First Midwife Appt

I have my first midwife appt at 9wks. Can anyone tell me what to expect? I know there’s blood tests - but how long will it take to get those back? Do you book the 12wk scam in at that appt?

I’m waiting to announce to grandparents until we’ve seen the midwife and we know things are okay, but don’t know if I’ll be able to hold it in much longer!

They may or may not do blood tests - in my current area they split your booking appointment into 2 separate ones and take all the bloods at the second one at 11 weeks.
Anyway - lots of paperwork. Questions about you, your partner, health history. You may need to do a CO2 test (blow into a machine). They’ll do your weight and height. You need to take a urine sample so call in at the doctor and ask for a urine pot in advance. You’ll get given your maternity notes booklet too

Sorry - the midwife at this point won’t be able to tell you if all is ok - she won’t be doing anything with regards to the baby at 9 weeks (so she won’t listen to the heartbeat or anything). Other things I forgot to say - she’ll do your blood pressure, ask about any medications you’re on, ask you to fill in an alcohol questionnaire

You’ll probably get your 12 week nuchal scan appointment through the post, not from the midwife.

The midwide will just ask you questions about family history/health etc etc She won't know anything about how baby is at this stage. You'll know more at the 12 week scan.

Our areas procedure.

Woman goes in alone and they bluntly ask if domestic abuse is an issue and do you need help.

Full medical history taken of both parents if known and BP taken along with choice of hospital/home birth.

We are told (due to history) if we are consultant led at this point and must sign a waiver if we decline.

Bloods, urine and monoxide reading taken.

12 week appointment made as well as scan date and consultant if required.

I am Scotland though so could well be different if elsewhere

Enjoy mama

There isn't a blood test where I am. You have to wee in a pot and then the midwife will ask you lots of questions about your health as well as your parents/grandparents, baby's father and baby's fathers parents and grandparents.

They asked me where I wanted to have baby, checked I wasn't at risk of DV and gave me a form to complete and hand in so they could book my 12 week scan. Was told I must take myself off for a blood test 1 week before the scan and was given a form to give to the phlebotomist as we have a non-appointments based blood test department at the hospital where you can just turn up and take a number.

At the end they gave me my notes, ran through all the telephone numbers and told me who my midwife at the surgery would be and told me I need an appointment at 16 weeks and I should book that after the 12 week scan.

It's a very long and boring appointment. However when having DC2, if you bring along toddler DC1 they rush through it very quickly to minimise the havoc Grin

It's a paperwork appointment but most of the time they will do bloods, co2, BMI and urine testing too.

They have always booked the 12 weeks scans and 16 week appointment at my booking appointments too.

It won't be until after the 12 week scan that anyone will be able to tell you that the baby is developing as expected.

Yes, in theory you could not even be pregnant as it isn't medically confirmed until the scan unless you've had reasons to be examined early. I felt like a complete fraud with DC1, as though I was imagining it.

DC2 has had multiple early scans due to being rather troublesome so I was much more relaxed about him.
