Just wondering if this is normal stretching or growing pain.

It's breathtakingly painful. Woke me abut 20 mins ago and it no better in different positions.

Or could it be the weetabix I ate at about 9pm not going down well?

It's utter agony. Is this normal? I never had anything like this with my first, but I barely got a bump that time round, so if it's muscle stretching then this will be it's first time.

Feels too sharp and stabbing for muscle - as if it's happening too fast.

Any advice appreciated!

Phone midwife unit now for advice please!

My breech baby gives me sharp pain like this when shoving his head further up under my ribs!

I'd take some gaviscon but if it doesn't subside within half an hour I think I'd be tempted to phone 111 or labour ward for advice.

I did get sharp pain under my ribs when DD's head was wedged there and she pushed against them but I don't think you'd get that yet at 21 weeks.

Does it feel like you are being kicked or poked?
Do you know what position your baby was in at your last midwife appointment?
Advice, if you are really worried is always to phone midwife/labor ward and get the opinion of them.

I had this, albeit much later in pregnancy and it was related to relaxin. The tendons and ligaments around my ribcage weren't holding things quite right and I would get this sharp, stabbing pain under the ribs at the top of my bump.

I obviously thought my placenta was detaching and called the hospital, but they reassured me.

My pain would ease off though, so if it's different for you, do get looked at.

I would definitely advise you ring your midwife/health team! Better safe than sorry.

By my DD1 used to do this. For the entire pregnancy. She would curl up under my ribs and feel like they were breaking. I couldn’t breathe or get comfy for hours! Was just where she liked to sleep! DD2 carried very low down and never went near my ribs. Flowers

You should ring your maternity unit or if you can’t get anyone there then phone labour ward. At 21 weeks your baby/uterus wouldn’t normally be far enough up to cause pain under your ribs. Severe pain which doesn’t ease after a few minutes or when you switch positions could potentially indicate a more serious problem- I’m not trying to worry you at all, but please describe it over the phone to a trained midwife rather than strangers on the internet. They always said to me that they’d rather you “bothered” them with nothing that you didn’t bother and it turned out to be something awful.

NewSense · 19/05/2018 00:32

I rang but they're not concerned, so that's good.

Was told to take paracetamol, which I now have. No change in the pain for 1.5hrs and cannot find a position to lie in or sit in :( hopefully paracetamol will help.

The baby is moving, but low down, not near the pain. It's a constant rather than kicking pain too. Aaaargh.

Thanks for your advice! Now to try to sleep through this...

I had the same at about 21 weeks and im 33 weeks now and still have rib and top of bump pain. Pregnancy sucks sometimes but dont worry! No harm in calling the midwife to check!

EeekPreggoAgain · 19/05/2018 13:45

Get you blood pressure checked - pop in a boots or Tesco and they’ll do it if you can’t get to the drs.

Not to scare you but I had pain under my ribs when I had pre eclampsia - which I’m sure you don’t have! But best to get checked sooner rather than later, particularly if it doesn’t go away. Xxx
