Questions about sweep

Hi everyone,
So I (reluctantly) had a sweep today at 38+5 due to static growth... from 2 week ago. Although it was a different sonographer, hospital and totally different type of machine... but still enough apparently. ANYWAYS, I will be (again, reluctantly) induced on Friday if this sweep doesn’t work.

I had a sweep done with my youngest which did nothing, and this time my little one hasn’t stopped moving since I had the sweep done and it’s all movement near my pelvis for the most part.

What are the chances this will work so early? Has anybody gone through similar? OH is away in London working until tomorrow evening so I’m worried he will miss it 😨

I don’t really know how likely this is to work so I’m unsure what I should be doing with myself

Hi @FranticallyPeaceful

No knowledge to share but thought I’d reply as at 38 + 4, I coincidentally had a sweep today too. Three hours later there was what can only be described as a “bloody show” but little evidence of things progressing since then.

I was apparently 2cm dilated, with a soft cervix already, so assumed (perhaps naively) that meant I was more likely for it to have an affect... guess tonight will tell?!

Like you, be very keen to hear anyones experiences with this before!

Hope the apparent lack of growth is nothing to worry about in any case - my little pudding hasn’t followed the growth scale during the last 6 weeks either... though MW’s don’t seem too worried!

Ahhh wow! Good luck @NotVeryGoodAtPregnancy ! Have you noticed anything yet?
I noticed that he has been extra active, and maybe TMI but my vagina is SUPER sensitive and feels very swollen all of a sudden Hmm. It isn’t fun at all. I’m also getting some killer bum-nerve pain over the last few hours, although probably unrelated and he’s likely just plonked his head somewhere awkward.

Nope, nothing exciting to report. I thought I had a few contractions in the night... but very weak and stopped at 3am. Have some period type pain now, so decided to have pineapple based breakfast and go for a long (*relative to my condition!) walk and see if that triggers anything!

Speaking from no experience whatsoever, I’d say that any extra sensations down there are encouraging but since the stats say only 25% of sweeps successfully kick start labour, we could both be in for a wait... Sad I also want to avoid induction if possible so can relate to your apprehensions about Friday. But, even if you don’t get the birth you want at least you know you’ll be getting baby snuggles before the weekend is over!

I had one at 39 weeks and was already 1-2cm dilated before she started. Mucous plug came out, had lots of spotting, cramping, and some contractions. A week later I was still pregnant and had elcs.

Good luck

FranticallyPeaceful · 16/05/2018 09:16

Absolutely nothing happened over night, other than the usual action of needing to pee every half hour 🙄

They worked all three times for me but I think my cervix was already 1-2cm dilated at the time which helped. I had my three DC the day after my sweep each time.

Tilliebean · 16/05/2018 10:20

I had one at 39+6, I was 1cm dialated and fully effaced. I’d had contractions over night for a few nights prior. Labour started within a few hours and DD arrived the following morning.

FranticallyPeaceful · 16/05/2018 10:42

Ah lovely to hear some positive stories. I’m currently 1cm dilated (or was yesterday) but “quite posterior” cervix still.
I’m currently about 21 hours post-sweep, so don’t imagine it’s worked

Lost some of my plug! small glimmer of hope

Ooo... any further developments overnight @FranticallyPeaceful? Fingers-crossed for you!

I gave up on hope yesterday afternoon when the pressure and contractions stopped completely. For once though, the tears didn’t lead me to tears or toblerone so that’s something I guess.

Have a growth scan today (as head measuring massive!) followed by a MW appointment to in theory set a date for induction. Do you think they may offer me another sweep today or too soon? To be honest, not sure I want one anyway as they seem to often just get your hopes up and leave you in limbo thinking “ooo ooo ooo is this it?” for 24 hours before bringing you back down to earth with a bang anyway.

Sigh.

MyNameIsTotoro · 17/05/2018 10:00

I feel your pain OP.

I'm 40+1 and had my second sweep yesterday. I was still only 1cm dilated with a posterior cervix, just as I was at me previous sweep the week before.

Very fed up now.

Had lots of sex and now spending the day attached to an electric breast pump to try and do some nipple stimulation. It does make me contract but so far it hasn't led anywhere. You can google how to do nipple stimulation yourself - our local women's hospital recommends it from 38 weeks now.

Fx!

FranticallyPeaceful · 17/05/2018 10:02

Ugghh I’m sorry they stopped @NotVeryGoodAtPregnancy .

Well apparently lots of midwives offer them 3 days in a row! But most like leaving it 48 hours between each one. So if you ask then I think you will likely get one though, they prefer sweeps to induction.

About 3am this morning I lost a LOOOOT of bloody mucus plug... but it’s 10am now and nothing is happening! I was having sporadic tightenings but nothing else. I’m going to an event with lots of children today so knowing my luck I’ll start giving birth on the floor in front of everybody, after days of carefully hiding myself away Grin

FranticallyPeaceful · 17/05/2018 10:04

@MyNameIsTotoro I hope it works for you! I’m having tightenings randomly every now and then but nothing else. I feel like after losing my plug my body is making an effort, it just doesn’t seem enough as tomorrow morning I’ll be induced. Anxiety level 9000

I had one at +5 overdue.
I had the sweep at 5pm.
Went into labour at about 2am the next morning.

NotVeryGoodAtPregnancy · 18/05/2018 08:37

Good luck with the induction today @FranticallyPeaceful.

@AddidasGirl good to hear some success stories. I had a second sweep yesterday so hoping I might meet my little pudding this weekend! but if all else fails, at least the house will be spotless!
