Early scan tomorrow-what to expect

I’ve got a scan tomorrow at 7 weeks to check for eptopic due to bleeding. What can I expect?
Will it be an internal scan?
What should I wear?
How long will it take?
What if it is eptopic?

Gah!!!!

They will probably start external and go internal if they need to. Wear a top and bottoms not a dress as it is easier for external and they will cover your waist with a cloth if they need to go internal to protect your dignity.

If it is ectopic they will either go with methotrexate (drug to end pregnancy) or more likely operate to remove a tube. They tend to operate as the tube is likely to be damaged so stops future pregnancies getting stuck in the same place. It'll be key hole surgery under general. If it goes well it'll be an overnight stay at most. Expect to be painfully bloated afterwards (pain went to my shoulders) as they pump you with air to inflate your tum during the surgery. Peppermint tea helps. They signed me off work for 2 weeks.

Good luck. Fingers crossed it isn't ectopic

@littlebelina thank you!! I’m just stressing so much which isn’t helping the baby and terrified I’ll be told this is it. It’s taken 2 years to get here.
I’ll wear trousers and top thank you, and hope that it’s only external and all is ok.
DH is coming so if it’s bad news at least I’ll have him.
Fingers crossed for good news

Best of luck, most likely an internal scan at 7 weeks. Will be thinking of you. I hope it’s good news. Flowers

Littlebelina · 10/05/2018 21:48

Remember if it is bad news and they remove your tube, you can still get pregnant and it's not as much as a 50% reduction in fertility as the remaining tube can pick up from either side. x

Bless you, fingers crossed it’s all ok and not ectopic. Sometimes that early on they can’t see much especially if the pregnancy is of unknown location. They will check for free fluids in your abominable cavity. I had to have multiple scans. Have they don’t blood draws? The normally do theses every 2 days to see how your hcg levels are rising or dropping?
In an ectopic they rise but in an irregular way, rather than doubling every two days. If your numbers are very high and they have a clear picture on the scan then they do operate. How ever if your numbers are low and not rising rapidly but continue to rise they give you a nasty injection Of methotrexate. If you have this please make sure you drink plenty of water. Good luck and I’m sorry you have to go through this. Xx

Thank you all. I’ve had no bloods, just went to the doctors 2 weeks ago and at the start of this week with some bleeding.
This is the first scan I have had and no other investigations yet.
Should I have?

Hi, I had bleeding and clotting over the weekend and ended up at EPU. I had a full check over to rule out eptopic. They examined me and also did an internal scan. Thankfully all was ok. I thought I was 7+4 when I went in but I was 6+5. Let us know how you get on. Good luck xx

aetw · 11/05/2018 09:04

Op, they will probably do bloods if the can’t find the location of the pregnancy. Do let us know how you get on. Keep calm. You will be ok. Xx

Claire90ftm · 11/05/2018 09:06

I know someone said to wear trousers and a top, but I'd go for skirt and top. Skirt is better for if you need an internal. The likelihood of that having to happen decreases if you go in with a full bladder which will push your uterus upwards and make things easier to see. Good luck, please let us know what happens x

Roeslein · 11/05/2018 09:10

Agree on skirt (not pencil obviously) and a top! That's what I did for the early scan and it was very convenient - that way you don't have to undress for either. Fingers crossed for you!

Katnisnevergreen · 11/05/2018 09:18

@lilly1207 I’m glad that all is well with you Smile and you are about the same as me along.

I’ve gone for a skirt and top to wear, thanks for the advice, so I haven’t got to get starkers below hopefully!!
I’ll also drink lots (but I’m seeing all the time so hope I don’t need to go during Blush )
I’ll update later when I know.

Big hugs for all the support

It's likely internal. I had one at 6 weeks with third baby. But at 9 weeks was external. Don't worry about what to wear, you undress behind a curtain and then pull a big sheet over. Good luck x

Baby will be completely unaffected by your stress. Life keeps happening during pregnancy and every pregnant woman gets stressed at some point. You feel what you need to feel. Fingers crossed everthing's fine.

Katnisnevergreen · 11/05/2018 17:35

Such a relief! Not eptopic and saw the little butter bean complete with heartbeat 😍 thank you all for your kind words earlier.
