I suffer from anxiety and I went for my 16 week midwife appointment I asked her if she could listen to baby's heartbeat and she couldn't hear it told me not to worry it's very normal not to find it, I have my gender scan on Saturday and I'm frightened to death something is wrong, what can I do? Xx

Hey, I'm sure that everything is going to be perfectly normal at the scan. Try to keep relaxing, and keep the nerves at bay. The midwife also tried to reassure you. Good luck!! X

It is the most worrying time, I understand. I've had two babies and 1st pregnancy was very difficult before 12 weeks. I'm sure you will get the scan results your after!! Are you going to find our the sex? Xx

Sophwalms · 09/05/2018 18:27

Yeah I can't wait! I'm counting down the days, we have a boy already so would love a girl xx

This happened to me and the next time she found the heartbeat no problem. They just get themselves in awkward positions xx

16 weeks is a very anxious time in pregnancy as you’re feeling well but not feeling movements. I’m surprised that your mw tried to listen in as the standard now is not to because it’s very hard to pick up.

Please be assured that if all was well at your 12 week scan your chances of anything going wrong are really minuscule now

Sophwalms · 09/05/2018 18:45

I feel like flutters sometimes but I don't feel like I used to i was terribly tired but now I just cry a lot. I know I'm just waiting for Saturday to arrive. Do u think everything will be ok xx

Lovely, I think you and baby are going to be completely fine xx

Littlebelina · 09/05/2018 19:18

My trust does it at 16weeks. It took her ages to find it for me, I think she only found it as she was very persistent. Luckily I wasn't too worried as I had a cardiology scan a few days before which showed the baby was ok and that I had an anterior placenta.

Try not too worry, not unusual not to hear it at this stage depending on the position of the baby and placenta. A lot of trusts don't do it until after 20wks for this reason.

Sophwalms · 09/05/2018 20:07

She only tried for like 1 minute as she was running behind and said she usually doesn't do it at 16 weeks, I just need to stop worrying I know. Just want to be reassured now xxx

It must have taken over 5mins for her to find mine (if not longer). Don't worry, I'm sure your scan will be fine

TheMotherOfBears · 09/05/2018 20:09

@sophwalms since it's a private scan can you bring it forward a couple of days?

SoyDora · 09/05/2018 20:09

Most trusts don’t listen at 16 weeks as it’s so hard to find. In fact my midwife doesn’t check for the heartbeat at any appointment! They say it’s not an accurate indicator of the baby’s health and that movement is the important thing. I was a bit surprised but see the logic.

Sophwalms · 09/05/2018 20:12

I am having a gender scan and I'm 16 weeks on Friday so I can't go before really. I wanted to book another one tomorrow but I don't want to see anything without my partner xx

If there was something wrong I would of known about wouldn't I? Xx

This is precisely why a lot of trusts no longer listen for the heartbeat at 16 weeks because if they can't hear it it causes unnecessary stress

TheMotherOfBears · 09/05/2018 20:20

@sophwalms I see! Yes, that's annoying. Do you know where your placenta is? Mine was at the front for one of my pregnancies and they always had trouble finding the heartbeat (& it dulled movements) so lots of worrying times. I hope the next couple of days go quickly and your scan goes perfectly on Friday. x

Sophwalms · 09/05/2018 20:25

Mines at the front yes, so hopefully everything goes ok, just need time to go quick lol. Xx
