What did you wash your newborn with?

Hi guys,

Probably a silly question but here goes!

I'm looking at the products available for bathing/washing babies and have no clue which is the best one, so thought I would ask my MN buddies!

My skin doesn't cope too well with Johnsons Baby products so would like to choose something else.

Any tips/comments much appreciated.

Just water here too.

DD is 9 months and we mostly bath her in just water still.

When she was a newborn we used to give her a deep relaxation bath each night which she loved. The water can be up to 38 degs C (similar to body temp).

We also used to massage her skin with olive oil (must be cold pressed) instead of moisturiser after the bath. Olive oil helped her cradle cap too.

At the moment we brew up some chamomile tea and pour that in her bathwater (about a litre in her baby sized bath).

Oh this is so boring. Didn't anyone use beer for shiny hair?? And then if they drink a little during bathing, they sleep well too.

stoppinattwo · 17/05/2007 06:08

I used the natural spring water at the bottom of our garden........................

Lol at this!

Infacare, because my sister told me Johnsons was too harsh. And now they're 7 and 8, they still get bathed in Infacare.

PavlovtheCat · 17/05/2007 08:50

water, and thats it.

Now, at 10 months I rarely use anything but water. Except when she has a signifacnt amount of food in her hair, or a particularly pooey bottom, or has chlorine from swimming pool on her, then...a tiny amount of johnsons. And not because I advocate it, but because it was given to me free. When it runs out, one day, I will most likely use something else as I have heard Johnsons is harsh on babies skin...

Her skin is wonderful, she has only had a minimal amount of nappy raah once, (as a result of anitbiotics).

Well its a good thing you can use babyoil on your stainless steel or Johnson's would go out of business.

Furball · 17/05/2007 09:01

But surely nearly everyone buys a bottle, realise it's crap then leaves it in the cupboard getting dust. Ds' bum was like a babboon when I used a wipe on him and I thought it was all wipes and that surely Johnson were the best. ha ha ha.

What sort of water though? Is Evian or Volvic best?

Mamamoor · 17/05/2007 13:15

Sparkling! Just joshing. Seriously just water to start with but when she she got a bit older and it became easier to bath the 2 dds together we use Boots stuff - the lavender bedtime stuff!- no problems so far. Have some organic baby shampoo from Waitrose. Had to wash her hair very carefuuly quite early on since she had such a lot of it and was still caked in that white waxy stuff (medical term escaptes me!) Not overly keen on Johnsons as is more expensive and the wipes are much smellier than other brands and a bit scratchy!

RGPargy · 17/05/2007 13:35

Volcanic water is obviously the best!! Dont you lot know anything??

sauce · 17/05/2007 13:36

Tap water & Johnsons' best. What else?

sauce · 17/05/2007 13:37

Okay, no Johnson's then. Just water. How dirty can a newborn get?

crayon · 17/05/2007 13:49

Er water. Plus a dap of aqueous cream to make my hands slippery enough get the cheesey bits out of those lovely baby neck folds .

motherinferior · 17/05/2007 13:50

Trepidation.

Water. I put ordinary kitchen olive oil in the bathwater, and used the olive oil you get in little bottles over the counter at the chemist as a moisturiser on their skin. Worked beautifully. Water on its own for nappy changes.

I now use E45 emollient in their bath, and Diprobase as a moisturiser.

expatinscotland · 17/05/2007 14:09

Just water

mrsbabookaloo · 17/05/2007 14:56

Just to try to add a bit of contention, for nappy-area cleaning, i tried to do the non-product thing and use cotton wool and water but I found that the cotton wool would just stick to her. Was I doing it wrong?

For bathing, I used...wait for it...just water.

mm22bys · 17/05/2007 17:04

With my first I used the bath and hair gel that a well-known bottle company makes, and it made his skin really dry and flaky.

As soon as I stopped his skin went back to normal.

With my second I have just used plain old H2O, and his skin is perfect, even five months down the line...

NomDePlume · 17/05/2007 17:09

Water

Just water.

I still don't use anything soapy in her bath and she is nearly 5. I use a very mild shampoo at the end of the bath and rinse it off with the shower head so she isn't sitting in anything that could bug her skin (she has mild-moderate excema).

cornsilk · 17/05/2007 17:12

Water. Used olive oil from chemist for dry skin.

Sugarfree · 17/05/2007 17:26

In summer I would roll them about in the morning dew.In Winter, organic asses milk. Now they're all much older,I have to use Swarfega.

I myself bath in champagne.

Nah,water to start the a squirt of whatever was in the bathroom later on. Stuff makes them too slippy in the bath anyway.
