Hi guys,

Probably a silly question but here goes!

I'm looking at the products available for bathing/washing babies and have no clue which is the best one, so thought I would ask my MN buddies!

My skin doesn't cope too well with Johnsons Baby products so would like to choose something else.

Any tips/comments much appreciated.

Water?! FGS, don't use water!

Use...er...

water.

Malaleche · 16/05/2007 15:45

water only till several months old and then i started putting some Weleda camomile bath milk stuff in

Kathyis6incheshigh · 16/05/2007 15:47

But please, please, FGS make you use normal 'H20' water. Do not on any account use deuterium oxide or 'heavy water'. No childcare book on earth would recommend the latter.

Malaleche · 16/05/2007 15:47

Ah, have just read OP - that's because (insert brand name products OP used here)are bad for your skin, as is anything with mineral oil in it....

Highlander · 16/05/2007 16:27

water for first month then Halo 'n' Horns.Have just tried Jason citrus body wash on the sprogs - v. nice. All SLS-free.

Interestingly, my big Tesco stocks the Halo and Horns round by the nappies, away from the rest of the Johnson-dominated bath stuff. Hmmmmm

Have never used baby wipes - even the lentil weaving ones have alcohol in them. Just what you need to irritate and dry skin

madbet · 16/05/2007 18:30

I used water at first but my dd had lots of thick hair so we had to use something to wash that - we chose johnsons top to toe and washed her from top to toe with that and we have never had any problems with her skin etc - unlike some of the other johnsons products it is very mild.

Hilllary · 16/05/2007 18:31

Water at first then a dab of softwash on both hair and body.

madbet · 16/05/2007 18:31

Should mention that we only started using top to toe after a month or so and did only use water when she was first born.

Chelseamum · 16/05/2007 18:39

Darling,
just water for a few days and then onto the organic mild body wash, shampoo for the hair also!

Avoid Johnsons stuff is nasssty!

Another water baby in this house. Although I must say at four she has a very pronounced bubble fetish going on...

Only used the tiniest amount of shampoo on her scalp when she was small as she has monster raving cradle cap that was impervious to everything. We used the sensitive/freak skin stuff from boots as I have the sensitive/freak skin thing going on too. Combined with the dousing in olive oil we got rid of the cradle cap at age 2.

water only, dentinox for cradle cap around 8 weeks - m/w put johnsons in his bath when he was literally 12 hours old - I was v v annoyed.

Just use water. It may help your children avoid allergies. After the first month or so use a mild emollient such as Oilatum. NO need for loads of bubbles on a baby. They don't really get dirty anyway.

kittypants · 16/05/2007 21:57

nowt
now we use little bit dream wash and blonde shampoo bar by lush followed by dream cream as ds has ezcema.but still mostly just water.

Mum2FunkyDude · 16/05/2007 22:00

ds is allergic to most baby products, Johnson's the worst. I have been using Boots own brand called Sensitive baby without any problems on him, the last 6 months.

misdee · 16/05/2007 22:00

water.

but also did shampoo dd3 hair after the 3rd day as it was very matted, and the midwives were getting tetching about my baby being 'dirty'

'when are you going to give her a bath dear?'

'not just yet'

and so it went on. had to be done after 3rd day as she puked in her own hair.

shonaspurtle · 16/05/2007 22:01

Water on the advice of the hospital midwives. Ds had dry skin on his legs but I didn't use any creams as both dh & I had eczema when we were babies and I didn't want to risk it. Didn't use baby wipes either for the first 6 weeks, just cotton wool and water.

Ds has lovely skin, the dryness cleared up all on its own and he smells gorrrrrrgeous! Way better than a Johnson's baby

I did start using some bubbles in his bath a couple of months ago, just for the fun of splashing in bubbles really! Boots Sensitive I think. Used the stuff in the Bounty pack for my bath...

yomellamoHelly · 16/05/2007 22:01

I didn't wash eqitheqr of my 42 for the first month - just top sandw tailed. Then water.

MissGolightly · 16/05/2007 22:02

Just water. This is now what midwives recommend until at least... 6 weeks? I think. Might be more.

But DS is now one and we still only use water most bathtimes, just a tiny bit of baby shampoo about once a month.

They don't need anything - it's only us smelly old adults who need to cover up the BO. Babies smell so lovely anyway, I used to hate it when people wearing perfume cuddled DS because it covered up his lovely baby smell!

yomellamoHelly · 16/05/2007 22:02

2 !

funnypeculiar · 16/05/2007 22:02

Whatever you do, don't use that awful water stuff...

CantSleepWontSleep · 16/05/2007 22:05

Err, has anyone suggested water yet?

chilledmama · 16/05/2007 22:09

water.

Didn't use bodywask/shampoo until DS was almost 3 months.

He got a bath once a week from 6 days old (I or DH got in bath and took DS in with us) then evrynight from about 7 weeks because it was part of the bedtime routine (but still just water).

No need for chemicals at the beginning...where do they go to get dirty???
