Positive beta after af

Hi ladies, this is my 1st time writing in one such chat group.
I just underwent an ivf cycle, my 1st one. I have a long history (vaginismus, unicornuate uterus, 2.5 year old miracle baby boy with Down Syndrome conceived via very first attempt of IUI, later 3 failed attempts of IUI for second child and now going through IVF). Both me and DH are 35.

I had my beta 10 days after embryo transfer on a Monday which was negative (1). I was asked to stop all supportive medication (estrogen patches, prog pills and injection) and go back to my RE for baseline testing on day 2 or 3 of period. I got my period on Friday and the office is closed on weekend so I went in today (day 4 of period). Now I just got a call saying I need to get tested again in 2 days since my beta hcg is 225.

What just happened? Did I miscarry? Ectopic? I have a lot of mixed feelings here. How is this even possible? I had a full fledged period.

Sorry to hear this. Did they do a blood test after you had started bleeding? I don’t think you will be able to tell until the second blood test. Was it a proper bleed or just spotting?

aetw · 03/05/2018 09:35

Sorry, I just read that you you said it was a proper bleed. Hmm.. don’t know what to think. It’s a curious one. I would say suspended thoughts until second result.

Hi @Enygma2018 sorry to hear you are going through this confusing time. I have had something similar recently (although admittedly with unassisted pregnancy) - basically had a negative urine hCG the morning I started my period, had a 4-5 day period then a positive urine hCG 5 days later (only took that test because I was on a clearblue trial).

Unfortunately there will be no real way of knowing what happened at this stage as a one-off hCG is pretty much meaningless - its the rate of change which is important. If your hCG is doubling every 48-72 hours thats promising for a viable pregnancy (and your "period" may have been an implantation bleed). If it is falling then its likely miscarriage, if somewhere in the middle it may be a non-viable pregnancy (either impending miscarriage or ectopic).

For me my initial blood hCG was 27, and then 31 after 48 hours. So in the limbo of a non-viable pregnancy but unclear whether miscarriage or ectopic. I've just had a repeat hCG a week later and waiting for the results tomorrow.

Fingers crossed that you have a positive outcome x

So Monday April 30 hcg was 228, Tuesday May 1 it went up to 374. I'm to get another blood test done today. Feels like life has come to a standstill. I had made peace with negative pregnancy test (beta 1.4 11dp5dt). Now not having answers is driving me nuts.

Wishing you good luck. Let's hope the results are favorable. I keep telling myself whatever happens happens for good. Although it is so hard to actually believe in rough times like this one.

Can implantation bleeding be 4-5 day long with the need to change 8-10 sanitary napkins the first 2 days? It was super heavy bleeding. With a few small clots. Sorry if this sounds gross.

Is it possible I miscarried the fetus but some placenta tissue remained that's making this hcg?

I so want to believe that I may be pregnant with a viable pregnancy and I'm so scared to face any unfavorable outcome. I wish no woman ttc has to face this kind of a situation

Hi ladies, thank you for your support. It is very helpful. So my hcg doubled from Tuesday. I'm getting more nervous. Blood work to be repeated on Monday. Ultrasound may be next week.

Gosh, that’s really strange. So sounds like you might be pregnant then? What have they said about it op? I hope you are ok? Xx

Enygma2018 · 03/05/2018 19:56

I don't know if I'm okay or no. I'm trying to relax and be neutral towards whatever is happening although hopes are building up and I'm scared to hear otherwise. My RE does think there is a remote possibility of a viable pregnancy here and that's why till they do ultrasound may be next week, he wants me to continue with estrogen patches, progesterone pills and poi.

Till I hear anything different next week I want to enjoy being pregnant (even though in reality this may only be in my head).

Well good luck with it. I think relaxing while staying optimistic is a good idea. X

Enygma2018 · 03/05/2018 21:25

Hi @strawberrye, when is you repeat beta? Keep us posted. Praying the numbers are good for you.

@Enygma2018 thanks, it was yesterday, just waiting for the results today.

Enygma2018 · 04/05/2018 22:17

Hi,
So got another round of blood work and an ultrasound today. I requested my RE aid he would do it since Monday seemed too far.
Nothing was seen on ultrasound but that's too early anyway.
Yest HCG was 764 and today it only went up to 900 and something. I'm so disappointed although normally doubling may happen over 48 hours but doesn't that mean today the count should have been 1100 plus and by Saturday 1500 plus? Not just that, I was kind of expecting the low number because some of my symptoms (nausea and vomiting) got better. Preparing myself to see nothing in my uterus on ultrasound or maybe signs of ectopic. I'm feeling very low and helpless.

@ strawberrye, did you get your results? I pray for good news for you.

And I read a post by another mom who went through something similar with slow rising hcg and ended up having to deliver at 25 weeks but the baby didn't make it more than a few days. And she says that pain was worse than the fear of losing her baby in the first trimester.

Every woman is different, everyone's circumstances are different and everyone has different perspectives and coping strategies. I sure suck at handling bad news. I have a 2.5 year old son with Down Syndrome. He is my miracle child and I want to keep my spirits high and not cry in front of him coz he feels really sad. Maybe God/destiny/Mother Nature has something better in store for us??!! Not sure where this journey is going.

Yes so my repeat hCG was less than 1, so a miscarriage. Relieved it wasn't an ectopic. Thanks for your prayers - I hope you have good news on your ultrasound.

Enygma2018 · 05/05/2018 02:43

I'm sorry to hear about it but you are right, it is better than ectopic. I guess nature has its own agenda. i wish you luck and speedy recovery. Big hugs.

So yest in the evening I started having severe cramping and stabbing pain. Spoke with my RE, came to the ER. My beta had gone up to 1300 and so did estrogen progesterone but on ultrasound nothing seen in the uterus, blood mass seen on Fallopian tube. Ectopic confirmed, got laparoscopy done at midnight. Stayed overnight at the hospital, waiting for discharge now. I'm sad but glad that I got to the hospital in time before any serious emergency (I had bled quite a bit in my pelvis).
