I am almost 6 weeks with second pregnancy, had mc just before Xmas. Hospital has said I can go for early scans at the EPU whenever I like for reassurance. I think I can go at 6 weeks but am worried they won't be able to see much and will just tell me to come back later - then I'll just worry they can't see much cos there's something wrong!
I have had a tiny bit of spotting, plus I have got morning sickness, unlike last time I was pg. Really I just need reassurance, as soon as it's reasonable, that things are progressing normally this time.
So, should I go for a scan when I'm exactly 6 weeks, or wait a bit longer when they might be able to see more?

If you have had some spotting you should go for a scan so they can see where the bleeding is comming from. If you hadn't had any spotting I would say wait until about 7 weeks as you are more than likely to see the heartbeat at that point, any earlier it's heart may not have started beating and you may worry yourself needlessly.

i had an internal scan at 6+3 & saw a very clear heartbeat (dd is almost 2 now ). so if i were you i'd hold out for a few more days. hope everything is ok.

6 weeks is very much on the boundary between 'reassuring' and 'causing unnecessary worry'. With this pg (now 22 weeks) I had a yolk sac and fetal pole but no heartbeat at 6+2. It really would be better to wait at least another 10 days. I've had 3 mcs and know how difficult it is, but a scan now risks causing you a lot of worry.

morning sickness is a positive sign, it shows high levels of hormones. i had a scan when i was 6 weeks (due to bleeding) this time and it scared the life out of me as no heartbeat and put my dates back so i was only five weeks. two weeks later had another scan my dates did add up and the heartbeat was there. it's scarry i know as had a mc before having dd2.

if you are worried call the hospital and they'll advice you on what to do. because of the spotting they should probably check you out but it is very common.

you are all so wise, thank you.
I am tempted to hold out for another week at least as I think having an inconclusive scan would worry me more, and I am "enjoying" my morning sickness which helps me stay positive that things are on track!
spotting was one day only, teeny amount, at 5+3
thanks

MrsHopeful ? I can totally understand how you feel and I was torn between having a scan asap and waiting in the hope I?d see more. In my case the decision is out of my hands as I have to have a scan next Monday when I?ll be 5+6 based on AF but a few days less based on OV to ensure the baby is in the right place so that I can start necessary meds. I don?t expect to see a heartbeat or fetal pole but a gestational sac in the right place will be good enough for me at this stage.

My advice would be to do whatever makes you feel better, sending hugs and hopes.

Hi Mrshopeful - I am having my first scan tomorrow at exactly 6wks. I've pushed for an early scan as I had an ectopic with my first preganancy at the New Year. I spoke with the nurse and she reckons they will be able to see either a sac or the heartbeat as my beta HCG's were above 2000 last week. Good luck x

Best of luck Pinkelephant
