Had my first scan last night!

I went in for what was meant to be my nuchal scan. However they said that they thought the baby was about 5 days younger than my dates and because of this they couldn't do the nuchal and other testing because they said baby was too young. I have to go back next week for another scan. I'm wondering how much baby can grow in that time? Also, i know my dates are 100% spot on and i phoned the family planning clinic (who removed my coil) to double check my dates and I WAS spot on.

So what does this actually mean? Is it just a case of perhaps the baby was conceived a few days later or something?

Any answers would be much appreciated!

On a different note, my DP was so thrilled to see baby - he gasped when he saw him on the screen! Also, the sonographer poked my tummy a few times and it really made baby jump around like crazy! It was great to see!

do you know exactly when you ovulated? Sperm can live up to 5 days before conception, in the right conditions.
Congrats . Scans are fab!

RG although you can be sure of the date you think baby was conceived, they can be up to a few days out but I thought it was only about 72 hours which would be 3 days. I had unprotected sex (apologies if TMI) on 14th & 17th Feb but baby was conceived on the 18th so how do I know which 'go' it was so to speak. I think I ovulated around the 14th but my cycle was going a bit crazy so I'm not 100%. Last time I was induced as allegedly 10 days overdue but I'm certain DD was bang on the day she was delivered as I'd only had sex once & my cycle then was spot on 28 days to the hour, so who knows. Hopefully it'll be fine when you do get your Nuchal, I had my results yesterday & t was a big relief.

No, i dont know exactly when i ovulated, but i was 100% certain of my LMP. I do know that i ovulated approximately 2 weeks after but i really couldn't tell you when lol.

I'm a little disappointed that i have to wait yet another week and have another week's worth of worrying about whether baby is ok or not I'm sure everything will be fine but you cant help but worry about what if you are that 1 person in however many.....

Hi RG, sorry you couldn't get your nuchal but great you get to see your baby again next week. I've got a book that estimates the size each week, it seems to be pretty accurate, when I went to my nuchal at 12 weeks the book said the baby would be 6cms, he was actually 5.8cms so not bad. It estimates between 11 and 12 weeks the baby's measurements go from 4.5cms to 6cms, so quite a lot of growth in that time, no wonder we feel so tired! It grows another centimetre and a half between weeks 12 and 13.

I'm sure everything will be fine

Mrs Mar - there's a measurement on the picture i got that says 6.5cm. I'm assuming it's the crown to rump measurement, in which case it would seem my baby is quite long!

I dont know what's what really!

hmmm that's wierd. Maybe there's a difference between the type of kit used, some scanners might need a larger baby to take a proper reading of the nuchal fold. Did you have to drink water before your scan? apparently the better the scanning machines don't require you to drink pints beforehand. I didn't, and so I assume that's why they were able to take a reading at 5.8cms. And yes, the sonographer told me that reading is crown to rump. Did they give you a date? Are you 12 weeks yet?

RGPargy · 15/05/2007 12:36

According to my letter, i didn't have to have a full bladder. They tried to give me an external scan but i have scar tissue that was causing the scan to be not very clear so i had to have an internal scan instead.

They didn't give me a date or anything, but just said that by their estimations and the measurements, i was 11+2 and not 11+6 as I had worked it out to be from my LMP.

Hopefully my scan next Tuesday will reveal all.

The sonographer did give me some reassurance as she could tell i was anxious and she said "everything looks fine tho", which is some relief i spose!

Should still have been able to do Nuchal as it's anywhere from 11 to 13+6 per all the literature I've read. Suppose if bub's a wee bit bigger it will make it easier. Funnily enough when I went for nuchal was told I didn't need a full bladder but consultant commented that my bladder was very empty as if I should have. If he'd seen it at my dating scan he'd have know just how full it could be! Sonographer commented on it about 3 times as if I needed reminding.
Plus if babe's a bit bigger it'll be even more active, our's did a big rollover then touched it's little face with both hands.
Good luck for next week.
