Empty gestational sac 6+3 (based on period)

I had some spotting yesterday at 6+3 And they gave us an early scan. It showed an empty sac. They said it's likely our dates are wrong because the sac was measuring closer to 5 wks but we've been TTC for 4.5 yrs and know our dates. My last period was 10th March and and I positive ovulation tests on day 13 and 14. I'm so confused, could it still show up yet or is it all over? This counting from the last period vs from conception is making it hard to understand whether we should have been able to see it at 6+3 (from period) or not. Any experience or guidance please? I'm so upset.

So sorry you're going through this worry. To put it a little bluntly yes you should have been able to see the baby at 6+3 and by that stage it would usually have a heartbeat. How far you are along is counted from your last period. Have they advised you to go back for another scan? Although technically you should have been able to see that because you are so early I wouldn't rule anything out at the moment. Another scan in a week should give you a better idea of what is happening.

Katielou2284 · 25/04/2018 06:32

Yep we have one booked for next Thursday (3rd). I already feel like it's all over but hubby and everyone keeps telling me to think positive. X

I went through similar but my scan was at 8 weeks and I was measuring 6 without a heartbeat. We had to wait a week as well for the second scan. We took the approach of hoping for the best but preparing for the worst. Thanks

ReturnofSaturn · 25/04/2018 06:45

I went for a scan at 6 weeks and couldnt even see a sac or anything. A week and a half later the foetal pole and heartbeat and everything was there.
My little boy is now here and very strong and healthy

MagicalCreatures · 25/04/2018 07:25

Sorry for the stress and upset you must be under. When did you get your first positive pregnancy test. That will be a great way to check you dates coz it’s almost unheard of to get a positive before 7 dpo. X

Littlebelina · 25/04/2018 07:29

We could only see an empty sac at 6weeks (although it did measure 6wks) with maybe a hint of a yolk on the internal. The epu thought it was a miscarriage as my hormone levels were high but saw heartbeat at 7 weeks.

If I was you I would do what I did which was preparing myself for the worst but remembering you can't change anything either way. Despite what pp says you don't always see a fetal pole or heartbeat at this point. Both my last pregnancies it was after 7 weeks before I saw a hb and I madly googled and found it wasn't uncommon. Do you know if you have tilted uterus as that can obscure views.

Katielou2284 · 25/04/2018 08:12

I didn't do an early test, I waited til dpo 14 when my period didn't come. X

But was the line fairly noticeable when you did it. X

Katielou2284 · 25/04/2018 13:26

Yeah it was a decent line on the three normal ones i did and got positive on a digital too all on dpo 14/15

Katielou2284 · 25/04/2018 13:27

Erm I don't know that to be honest but I know they also couldn't locate one of my ovaries yesterday either x

Katielou2284 · 25/04/2018 13:28

This is great to hear. Gives me a touch of hope. X

If you got quite a strong positive that many dpo then you must be right on your dates. But don’t panic because a lot of the girls on our pregnancy thread have all had early scans and are measuring about a week behind then they thought.
Some have seen heartbeats and some haven’t. The baby is so small at this stage it’s only got to be laying at an odd angle for them to mess up with the measuring x

Bibijayne · 25/04/2018 17:40

I had an early private scan at 6+4 (based on LMP). They could only see an empty sac and insisted I must be off on ym dates.

I had a bit of spotting around week 10, so had an NHS scan at week 11.

Baby measured 11weeks + 4 at that scan.

At this stage it's very hard to tell one way or another. Which is why they date around 12 weeks.

Wishing you all the best. Hope it all works out.

TinyPawz · 25/04/2018 17:49

I went for scan at 6+2 according to lmp and only sack visible. Had to go back a fortnight later (longest wait ever) but by then baby was visible. I apparently ovulated 5-6 days later than typical. Don't give up hope yet

Katielou2284 · 25/04/2018 21:40

Thank you stories like yours are giving me a little hope to cling on too. Will keep you all posted next Thursday after the scan.

I do ovulation tests so I know mine wasn't late but will just have to wait and see at the next scan. I'm not particularly optimistic about it but a couple of positive storiesfrom others have given me a glimmer of hope. X

I'm in your position at the moment. I had an early scan yesterday due to pelvic pain. I should've been 7+6 but I've been put as 6+4, with a heartbeat. I did ovulate late CD 19 however got an early BFP so not much wriggle room on my dates. I've also been advised to go back in two weeks. Just want to say I wish you all the luck in the world Thanks

Katielou2284 · 26/04/2018 09:15

If you have a heartbeat thats great news and you should be fine though shouldn't you? I really hope it's ok for us both! My other pregnancy ended in missed miscarriage. We had a scan around 11 weeks that time and was measured at 9.5 with no heartbeat. Its all just heartbreaking, each time we've thought we were going to be parents and then it gets taken away from you. Its just so cruel.

Ovulation tests don't mean you've ovulated. They just show a surge of the lh hormone. I had my last period in January and we were ttc I was doing ovulation tests and got a positive on February 17th where we dtd. Two weeks later still no period or positive pregnancy test. I actually didn't get a positive test until March 17th and I'm 9 weeks pregnant now and have had scans at 6 weeks and 8 weeks. I ovulated two weeks after my positive opk so something similar may have happened to you even by a few days plus sperm can live for 5 days. Wishing you all the best at your next scan

Katielou2284 · 26/04/2018 18:37

Yeah potentially by a couple of days but I got a strong positive test 14 days after I thought i ovulated so cant be too far out on dates. Hopefully its enough to make the difference though, i really hope so.

@Katielou2284 there's a few of us in the same boat I went to EPU on Monday for an early scan following a mc pretty confident on dates because I had been tracking..thought 5 + 4 and midwife said empty sac which means more like 4 weeks. Also sac only measures 3mm which is tiny. They want me back next week but the wait is terrible so I know what you are feeling xx

Katielou2284 · 27/04/2018 17:41

Aww it's a horrible wait isn't it. When is your apt? Mines on Thursday. My sac was measuring much bigger than yours at 8.2mm but they still reckoned that was more like a 5 wk sac than 6. I have no idea about it, there seems to be so much conflicting information out there so who knows what our chances are if seeing something next week. I really hope it appears for us both!

BobbySD345 · 27/04/2018 18:20

Mine isn't until next Saturday although she did say she would let us know if she puts a weekday evening clinic on. I've had time off work for apps and I don't want them clicking that I'm pregnant so trying to keep time off to a minimum! Is it right that if you have a particularly long cycle the month you conceive your dates can be off because the usual dating works off an average 28 day cycle? I just can't get my head around the midwife saying I was about a week off what I thought!

Katielou2284 · 27/04/2018 18:39

Yeah if your cycle was longer it means you would have ovulated later and you conceive shortly after ovulation. So unless you know when you ovulated your dates could be off. I do ovulation tests and have been for years and they've never been wrong for me plus I got a positive test at the time I should have based in that ovulation date too so I know my dates are correct. Although one of the ladies above was told her dates must be out and then by 11 wks she was measuring the right size so clearly her dates weren't out so you never know. I guess we'll find out soon enough. I'll let you know how mine goes on Thursday. X

According to my 12week scan I must have ovulated before my positive opk although my scan at 7 weeks was dead on with my opk. But hey!

There is a reason that they don't diagnose blighted ovums with one scan. They need 2 to check what is going on. Just keep you fingers crossed and try not to dwell on it too much(easier said than done I know)
