5 weeks pregnant and shoulder blade pain?

KelB24 · 23/04/2018 11:19

Hi everyone,

Found on Tuesday that I'm pregnant with my second child. I had what I think was implatation bleeding on Friday 13th and Saturday 14th. I had no more bleeeding so did I pregnancy test on Tuesday afternoon the day my period was due and got a positive result so did another at night and got another positive. On Wednesday I had about 2 occasions with pink spotting when wiped so I just put it down to leftover implantation bleeding. On Thursday I started getting shoulder blade pain and higher back ache. It's not went away properly since. I did another pregnancy test on Friday morning and got a stronger positive again. The pain is not agonising I don't feel I need paracetamol for it so haven't taken any. Also, I've been getting diarrhoea cramps in the morning mostly and I've had the odd niggly cramps. I have the normal pregnancy symptoms such as peeing more, feeling more exhausted etc. Just don't know if I should be concerned or not? Reading things on google is freaking me out

Thanks in advance

Hi OP. Sorry you are struggling at the moment. I too had shoulder discomfort in early pregnancy and completely freaked out (thanks to Mr Google) everything was fine. I visited the dr and they told me to hold off and see how I got on and my symptoms disappeared. I would always suggest getting medical advice if you are worried x

sauvignonblancplz · 23/04/2018 11:27

Definitely go to GP, I had the same slight pink spotting, the dr took bloods to monitor HCG levels. No doubt everything is perfect but better to be safe.

hammeringinmyhead · 23/04/2018 11:30

I had this pain at about 5 weeks although had no idea I was pregnant! I tested at 8 weeks (thought implantation was a light period). Mine went away and I am 12 weeks now but in fairness I haven't had a scan yet.

KelB24 · 23/04/2018 13:53

Thanks everyone, I'll keep an eye on it and if it doesn't improve and I'm still worried I'll get it checked out

I think shoulder tip pain can signify an ectopic pregnancy. Not sure if shoulder blade is linked. You have some reassuring replies above, but I'd be aware of the pain and take note of it moves to the tip? Hopefully it's just one of those things, though!

Mousefunky · 23/04/2018 16:18

I had this at around the same time and slight pink spotting too. I’m now 12+2 so I suppose that rules out ectopic... it went away on its own.

From what I have read ectopic pain usually starts on one side of the pelvis and by the time it reaches your shoulder tip it’s very serious indeed. There’s also generally black/brown bleeding.

You are more than likely fine. Congratulations Flowers.

PrettyWisdomous · 23/04/2018 16:21

Congratulations on your pregnancy!

I would speak to your GP or go to an urgent care centre for advice, as the symptoms you describe could be a sign of eptopic pregnancy. Hopefully it's not that, but better to be safe than sorry!

KelB24 · 23/04/2018 16:41

Thank you. This has put my mind at ease a little that you have experienced it and everything has been fine. Congratulations to you too 😊
I've basically had no other symptom of eptopic. It's not like it's agonising either it's just there. I'll get it checked if gets any worse not got my booking appointment until 28th May!!

I don’t want to scare you but if I were you I would get this checked out as this was the only symptom plus a bit of bleeding as you described for my ectopic pregnancy. Please don’t leave it a whole week. It’s dangerous. You can go to your local EPU and they can run test. Best to be safe than sorry. Xx

KelB24 · 23/04/2018 17:50

Can I ask what your bleeding was like and your shoulder blade pain? How do they test for it?

I would definitely go to your doctor. The shoulder tip pain only occurs when an ectopic ruptured which I think would be unlikely at this stage...but there is no need to risk it. It will put your mind at rest too. I had some shoulder pain at 5 weeks so went to my doctor, they sent me for an early scan the next day and they found a healthy baby(or sac at that time) where it should be but also a potential ectopic twin. I have since been scanned weekly so they can keep a close eye and keep measuring the unknown 'mass'. Everything is fine and my baby is growing really well..but if I had not gone to the doctors I would not know any of this and potentially would not be getting the care I needed. I am not implying your situation will be anything like mine....I just think you might regret waiting it out if anything more serious did happen. Obviously....it is 100% your choice and you must do whatever you are comfortable with x

sauvignonblancplz · 23/04/2018 19:52

I had pink spotting when I wiped, not heavy at all, but when they drew the bloods they were only increasing slowly which signifies an ectopic pregnancy, I had no other symptons. All will no doubt be perfectly fine but best to get checked x

KelB24 · 23/04/2018 20:04

Did you get strong positives? Even on the day of missed period even at night I got a strong positive test.

Hollieb1987 · 23/04/2018 20:10

I had this for a few days. Got myself checked out/ scanned and it had no link to the pregnancy at all. I'd started sleeping on my side and my shoulder was in agony! Pregnancy pillow at the ready x

aetw · 23/04/2018 20:41

I didn’t get a strong positive , no. The bleeding was light pink spotting and the pain went on between a dull ache to a shooting pain in my shoulder blade traveling up to my neck. It’s not worth worrying over, but do get it checked out ASAP. Most EPU’s are self referral these days. You could call them first to check?

sauvignonblancplz · 24/04/2018 05:02

I had a strong positive yes . Let us know how you get on .

WreckItRach · 24/04/2018 07:04

Shoulder tip pain is a sign that there is extra fluid in your abdomen. I had it last summer and it turned out a cyst had ruptured and I had to have surgery. I would definitely get it checked out just to be on the safe side, if you have no other symptoms then I'm sure you will be fine but it's better to get it looked at 😊

Graphista · 24/04/2018 07:10

I had pink/red spotting with mine. PLEASE get checked ASAP not worth the risk imo

Stee1 · 24/04/2018 07:12

I didn't get shoulder tip pain with my ectopic just bleeding on and off and pain like period cramps on the one side. I would definatly get it checked out

ND348 · 24/04/2018 07:59

If I was you I'd try and get checked at an EPU or your GP. I had shoulder pain coupled with abdominal pain, rang the GP in the morning who sent me to the EPU suspected ectopic. Saw doctors and nurses there who ran tests and swabs before deciding the scan me. Turns out I had free fluid on my uterus which would explain the pain (it's the fluid following a rupture in an ectopic that causes shoulder pain). I felt so much better as I'd worked myself up about what it could be. It's always best to get checked just in case, often and hopefully it's nothing but at least if it is an issue you will be in the right place. Good luck xx

KelB24 · 24/04/2018 13:44

Thanks everyone for the advice I've phoned EPU and they are really busy just now so someone's going to phone me in a couple of hours. I'm not in agony or anything like that and I've had no more spotting since Wednesday so trying not to worry.

I was wondering if you ever found out what this was .. I just found I’m pregnant last week and I’ve started getting the same as you today

19annie86 · 20/12/2021 16:08

I had shoulder tip pain, pain uo high in arm aswell, also pain shoulder blades, worse thing I did was Google it, it had me freaked out, I didn't have any bleeding or spitting tho. I booked a pravite scan as epu wouldn't see u unless alot of bleeding etc. Thankfully scan was ok, since been for 12 week and 20 week scan all good, currently 25 weeks. Best thing to do is get a scan even if u have to pay for pravite one. Good luck

Mc1996 · 21/12/2021 10:57

How much did you pay for private one? I’ve had no bleeding or spotting, just an uncomfortable feeling in my left shoulder blade, that’s a bit sore when I move it but it comes a goes, especially when I sit a certain way

Its potentially a sign of an ectopic pregnancy which can be really serious, even life threatening if it ruptures. Please go to your local EPAU to rule it out ASAP.
