Ketones in urine?

Just wondering if anyone else has had a similar experience to me. I've been a bit poorly over the weekend and went into hospital yesterday to be checked over. Apparently I have ketones in my urine. I was told that I need to eat more - but I am already eating when I am hungry and at regular intervals. Should I be eating certain food types? Or just much more food?

Also, I apparently have some fluid on my lungs which they were bothered about at first and then decided it was "just because you are pregnant" - I'm a bit confused by this! Any ideas anyone?

not sure re the fluid

but ketones..used to get that all the time, as had horrendous morning sickness and loss of appetite

try to eat little and often, complex carbs and try 6 small meals to keep blood sugar at a more even keel during the day

hope you are feeling better soon

I had ketones.

I was hospitalised as I was badly de-hydrated. I spent weeks in hospital on a drip

So if you can, drink as much as you can, especially if you are being sick, as you need to keep hydrated

Thanks Lulumama, they didn't really tell me what i should be eating - and I guessed that they wouldn't mean more chocolate The fluid thing is a puzzler as although I've been really breathless I thought that was just down to the baby's position and the late stage I am at. Oh well, not long to go now and I have tablets for the dizziness and nausea so am feelign a lot better

you can get a false positive for ketones with some anti convulsants, are you epileptic?

RedFraggle · 13/05/2007 21:46

Thanks FF2 - I have been very thirsty the last couple of days. I haven't actually been sick recently, just feel permanently queasy, with that icky taste in mouth that you get when your body is preparing to hurl! urgh. Will try and drink even more. Might have to take a duvet to the loo with me though

No I'm not epileptic. Up until a few days ago, I had been feeling really quite well apart from rather breathless. I'm 36 weeks tomorrow

lots of water, or herb / fruit tea, not too much caffeine,

take it easy !

I think the ketones usually arise as your body starts to breakdown your own fat stores (which is not a problem in itself) - hence it usually indicates 'starvation'. I think anything you eat will be fine (within reason of course) - so I don't think there is anything specific you should be eating.

I was also told when I had ketones in my urine that I dahn't been drinking enough but I am not 100% sure how that relates.

i go into ketosis when pregnant due to voilent morning sickness. when i threw up blood at 16 weeks they wree unconcercened about that aspect byt kept me in as i was producing a lot of ketones. they made me starve for 24hours to stop the vomiting, then was made to eat a lot of carbs little and often. took 4days in total to get out. its a PITA, but i do seem to end up ligther just after giving birth than when i started, by around 1stone.

My advice is eat little and often, and drink plenty as well.

RedFraggle · 14/05/2007 20:46

Thanks for all the advice! I have been trying to drink lots and up my food intake. My family are now permanently badgering me to be eating pretty much constantly, so at this rate I'll put on about another stone by time the big day arrives! I'm still really dizzy and light-headed though, so fingers crossed it settles down soon...
