20w+5 no movement

Hi all,

I am 20w+5 and haven't felt the baby move since Saturday evening. It's only tickling at the moment and not full on kicks. I'm not sure if this is normal at this stage or if I need to contact my midwife?

Thanks everyone

You can always ring in. 20/21 weeks is still quite early for worrying and also quite early in terms of what they can do intervention wise. Picking up the phone won't do any harm.

In all honesty, the midwifes may not be that helpful. Because Baby is not yet “viable”. Patterns of movement at this stage are rather variable, an all it takes is a shift in position or you having more or less wind than normal, and things can feel very different. I wouldn’t let that stop you contacting the midwives, but I think this is what they will tell you. Have you had any thing else, like pain or bleeding? Have you had your 20 week scan?

Ring your delivery suite, you need to go in and get it checked out

You're still quite early to be feeling movement. I was 21 weeks (posterior placenta) and couple of friends were 23/24 weeks and one was 26 weeks.

I know the position of the placenta (anterior- to the front) will cushion movement as will a baby facing toward your back/spine.

The labour Ward or PAU are unlikely to see you at 21 weeks as baby needs to be 28 weeks to fit on the monitors.

If you're really worried maybe call midwifes and ask if they'll listen in.

Hi, I'd definitely call in to our your mind at rest but I had such varied movements between 20-23 weeks and I have an anterior placenta which still cushions most of the movement.

I'm 27 weeks (2nd baby) and find my baby's kicks very uncomfortable. And I've got an anterior placenta so was expecting them to be quite subtle. I don't remember my first baby's kicks being this aggressive!

Thanks everyone. I did end up calling and they got me in to listen to the baby's heartbeat. Thankfully everything was fine and I've had some more movement tonight. Don't know where I'd be without all you wonderful mumsnetters! X

That's good news, OP. Welcome to movement anxiety hell for the next 20 weeks! 27 weeks down with number two and anterior placenta. This one stops moving if I lie down.
