6 weeks scan results - sac but no heartbeat

Hi 👋🏼 , it's been 8 weeks since the first day of my last period , I worked it out on my cycle app that I'm 6 weeks pregnant as of yesterday (from conception) . I had my first internal scan yesterday and the nurse spent quite a long time looking for the embryo, she advised that I needed to empty my bladder which i did then she advised she had located the sac , which was about 6 weeks growth but no pole and no heartbeat . How she described it to me was this was abnormal and I probably have had a missed miscarriage ...I was told to come back in a week to make sure for another scan. I'm now really worried about this 🙈.

Has anyone experienced this before and located a heartbeat the following week? Or do I start to prepare myself for the worst ? Xx

I had a scan at 6 weeks and could see a tiny bean pole with a heartbeat and the yolk sac so it doesn’t sound good OP Sad. The only thing is if you ovulated later than you expected and aren’t as far as long as you think.

So sorry OP. Does sound like a MMC. Also your dates are from your LMP, not conception so you would be 8 weeks. I'm hoping the MW is wrong and maybe you OV really late or something but I would prepare yourself, just in case she's right. Massive hugs Thanks

I think you don't know either way at the mo and I really hope you'll be ok, but if you start bleeding make sure you get codeine from A&E even if it doesn't hurt at first. Flowers

Thanks all for your responses, it means such a lot, it wasn't a planned pregnancy but I still feel really upset and I'm now worried that this means I may have trouble conceiving in the future 🙈Xx

As above, your pregnancy is dated from LMP so you would be 8 weeks pregnant. It would be unusual not to see a heart beat at 8 weeks with a viable pregnancy, I’m sorry.

It does sound likely to be a miscarriage, though its very common to miscarry and not a sign that you'll have problems in future pregnancies. Its often due to a problem with that specific embryo rather than anything to do with the mum too. Flowers

So sorry for your worrying news, this is pretty much exactly what happened to me in my first pregnancy. I went for a scan at what should have been 8 weeks (from last period) but looked like 6 weeks with no heartbeat. After a week it was the same and I had a confirmed MMC ☹️

However just to reassure you a bit, I got pregnant again within a couple of months and that pregnancy went fine. My little girl is now a year old.

Aww thanks @bubblesandsquarks
@purplesnails thank you for sharing your experience , sorry that you went through this too but I'm so pleased you have a lovely little girl now xx

You might have been too early as accurately dating conception can be difficult (unless it was an IVF cycle) due to egg release timing, sperm living up to 5 days etc. I went for what I thought was a 6 week scan and we saw a sac and fetal pole but no heartbeat. The nurse said it all looked healthy and the right size if our dates were out by a week (which I knew in our circumstances they could have been). We went back a week later and saw the heartbeat. I spent the week preparing for the worst with 99% of myself and 1% hoping. The heartbeat is now a 2.5 year old... Wishing you the very best.

eurochick · 14/04/2018 16:25

At 8 weeks there should definitely be a heartbeat. Unless your dates could be very wrong, I don't think the chances are good. I'm sorry. I've been there and it's shit.

Wellysocksbox · 14/04/2018 16:30

It doesn’t sound good.

But please be reassured that 1/3 pregnancies end in MC. I had 3 in a row and during the 4th I lost a twin but the surviving child is now 11 and is perfect. Flowers

I’m so sorry. I’ve just had a 6 week scan (6 +5 since LMP) and apparently something is in the lining but there was no yolk sac, heartbeat or anything. I’m going back in 10 days as it might be too early or a MMC. It’s horrible. My best advice (have had previous MMC at 9 wks) is to stop looking at baby stuff etc and prepare yourself for the worst. It is always better to be pessimistic than being overly hopeful and then completely let down.

I had a scan at 6 weeks + 4 (based on LMP). They hunted and could only find an empty sac - no pole, no heartbeat. Totally stressful.

At 10 weeks I had a bit of spotting and some tissue. Totally heartbroken.

I was booked in for a scan with the EPU at approx 11 weeks (based on LMP). I was shocked and delighted to see a wiggly little baby measuring 11 weeks + 4 (ahead of schedule based on LMP). Dates for ere confirmed at my 12 week scan a week later.

I'm 19 weeks + 2 at the moment.

There's no guarantee of good or bad news at this time. Try and hold in there and ask if you can ace a rescan in a couple of weeks time.
