Is it OK for me to....

take spatone without anyone actually telling me I'm iron deficient? I'm 21+3 and I'm feeling shattered. I think I'm going through a bit of a growth spurt at the moment, my bump muscles have been aching quite a bit, I think it's stretching rather than anything scary, and my bump has moved up a bit, so I think the baby is getting bigger as it no longer fits in my pelvis neatly. I'm not seeing my gp for another three weeks, and the midwife for another 7 weeks. I thought if I tried a bit of iron boostage it might help the extreme tiredness I'm experiencing. Do you think that's ok? Can you overdose on iron if you take supplements when you've not been specifically been told to? (My last bloods, taken on the day of my 12 week scan, were ok, I haven't had any done since)

Sorry to ramble, advice would be gratefully received!

xx

I wouldn't take anything without checking with your GP or midwife first. You could telephone them and ask.

Thanks humphrey... the spatone website says it's ok to take during pregnancy, but I just wanted to check. GPs are shut and midwives don't seem to be taking calls on a saturday, keep getting their machine. Do you think a pharmacist would know?

Could you leave a message for your midwife and then maybe phone the ante-natal ward at the hospital to see if they can help?

spatone is very mild so if your only taking one sachet a day it should be fine... lotsa of mws routinely recommend it without evening checking bloods

You can have Spatone in pregnancy. In fact, pregnant women can have 2 satchets a day.

I have refused all blood tests in this pregnancy and my midwife has encouraged me to take the Spatone as it is very good.

I've got to go out in a min, I might try them from my mobile, thanks Humphrey. I think I'll buy some anyway, and try and get an answer sometime today so I can take one sachet this afternoon.

Thanks PinkTulips... I'm hoping it'll be ok. I have heard of lots of people taking it. My diet has been terrible recently due to horrendous shifts at work. That might be the reason I'm tired too, but I felt fine yesterday, and slept ok last night. This tiredness has hit me like a brick today. I haven't felt like this since first trimester.

Yes I started feeling tired about 36 weeks and have taken sptone for the last 3 and felt a lot better almost immediately. Again, my iron levels were ok I just wanted a boost.
