Blighted ovum? Empty sac found

I had a private early scan 2 weeks ago for reassurance as a few of my friends have had miscarriages in the last year and my symptoms were no where near as bad as with my 1st. (To be honest I thought I was being paranoid).

I should have been 7 weeks but the sonographer found an empty sac. I was referred to the early pregnancy unit who could not tell me any different, but took blood for HCG levels and told me to wait two weeks and they would scan again.

I know this will likely end in miscarriage, and they should have been able to see something but as time goes on and the wait seems to be taking forever I feel like more hope is creeping back in. Am I wrong to hope? Is there any chance that it was hiding? I’ve had no bleeding or pain.

With my third at my 12 week scan I was only actually 10 weeks so must've ovulated late, so earlier scans probably wouldn't have shown what I expected.
I didn't get a positive with FRER until 5 days after my period was due with that pregnancy though.

I really hope its a miscalculation of dates

Thank you for your reply, that gives me reason to hope. I'm not sure what FRER means though. I was tracking with ovulation sticks/apps and was pretty sure on dates but sac measured 6 weeks instead of 8. I feel like they should have seen something at 6 weeks though.

The private clinic did offer to rescan. I'm tempted to go back just to have one more shot at seeing something/ get used to not seeing something before I go to the hospital but OH thinks I'll be upsetting myself twice and should just wait.

I had an empty sac with this pregnancy at 6 weeks (I knew I was definitely 6 weeks though) but had fetal pole and hb a week later. Did you have a internal scan? It could well be a miscarriage but it's not 100% which is why they need to scan twice to confirm blighted ovum. Good luck

Yes. Two internals. I was sure I should have been 8 weeks but sac only measured 6. Hoping I ovulated late but as I was tracking it's not likely.

FRER is first response early response pregnancy test that's meant to show up before period is due.

I think personally I'd go for the extra scan now and see if there is anything. If there's not then while it will be upsetting, you're already in that position at the moment. Whereas it could stop you needlessly being upset if it was just because you weren't far along enough.

I had a private scan at 6 weeks bang on and they were able to see a heartbeat so I’m afraid it doesn’t look like good news OP .

I have had the same except that I got to 12 weeks and they discovered a blighted ovum. I had one DS already and had a straightforward pregnancy the first time so I was really shocked. The second time around I had a 6 week scan and saw a heartbeat.

Thanks all. I know it's not likely but I can't help staying up until 1am Googling again and again. I'm going back to the private clinic for a rescan this afternoon.

Go with your instinct. If you want another scan for your own peace of mind then do it. At least then you will know. By now I imagine you should be able to see a heart beat if at your last scan you was 6 weeks. I went for a scan and they couldn't see anything, two days later they saw a tiny sac but nothing in it, exactly 1 week later I went back and saw a tiny heart beat. They said I should be about 6+3 weeks then. Now o believe I'm about 7 weeks! There's still hope. Good luck with your scan today x

I went back to the private clinic today as I couldn't stand the hope creeping in. The sac has grown but they still couldn't see anything there and it hasn't grown as much as it should have done. At least I know what to expect when I go to the hospital on Tuesday.

Im so sorry to hear. With my previous miscarriage they found an empty yolk sac at 9 weeks and I proceeded to bleed a day or so later.

Because I’ve had two miscarriages I was offered an early scan for my current pregnancy. I went for that scan today at 6 weeks 5 days but they found nothing (internal scan) but commented that ‘something’ is in the womb. I was told that it might be a bit early to see so I’m going back in 10 days. Early pregnancy is the worst :(
