Strange/less common pregnancy symptoms

Hi All

This is my second pregnancy and so far quite different to my first. Currently 6+3 and morning "nausea" has kicked in with first food aversion discovered yesterday (never really happened this early with my daughter and only the odd day of nausea) but I also have a couple of odd symptoms which I haven't really seen much on.

The first being I keep getting static shocks when i touch items and it started just before i found out i was pregnant. The second being i am absolutely frozen most of the time when everyone else around me is fine or too hot. If the windows are open at the other end of the office I end up shivering.

Anyone else had any "unusual"/less common symptoms?

Maybe get your thyroid checked - often causes being too cold, and pregnancy can cause thyroid issues

JayneT2015 · 09/04/2018 16:35

@TammySwansonTwo - thanks will look into it!

I was cold ALL the time between weeks 4 and 10 or so, it was ridiculous! Now 15+3 and get stabbing pains in my boobs, which is one I haven't read about. Also occasionally in my foof, which I think might be Mumsnet's famed fanny daggersGrin Annoyingly, my nausea has been getting worse since week 12 and is now accompanied by vomiting... Not what I was expecting!

Everything else I've come across either on here or in an app/ book, although it's still weird (hairgrowth, spots, excessive salivating, aversions, supernose etc)

Scotstar · 09/04/2018 16:37

I got the static shocks too! Very very annoying!

TinyTerror1 · 09/04/2018 16:38

I'm 14+1, first pregnancy, and I've also been unusually cold for a lot of the last 9 weeks (since I found out). I especially find if I let myself get the tiniest bit too cold my nipples get agonisingly painful. Everything I read says I should be overheating but no such luck most of the time!

Sushirolls · 09/04/2018 16:45

@TammySwansonTwo beat me to it! I was going to suggest getting your thyroid checked too x I have UAT and I'm always freezing! X

JayneT2015 · 09/04/2018 16:51

@TeachingPuffin have you stopped feeling cold now then? Haha yes i've had the "fanny daggers" a couple of times in the last few days but i got a bit of that in my first pregnancy so didn't surprise me too much. My work colleague is about the same and her nausea vomiting got much worse between 12 and 15 weeks than the first trimester but she's coming out the other side now so hopefully you'll start feeling better soon!

@scotstar oh thank goodness someone else is too!

@TinyTerror1 i do get the overheating if i have to walk any brief distance and the odd hot flash but mainly cold. Did you mention it to your midwife? If so did she say anything?

Also having insomnia every night between 4 and 5.30 but frustrating when your alarm goes off for work just after 6. Don't remember the insomnia kicking in till about 30 weeks last time. Lets hope it swaps and i can sleep lots at the end haha

I was always freezing in my first pregnancy. My fingernails were blue for the first 15 weeks or so and prior to getting pregnant I was always the one complaining that the office was too hot! It wore off somewhere between 15 to 20 weeks and I didn't experience the same when I had DS.

Pinkvoid · 09/04/2018 16:52

I felt extremely cold for a couple of weeks between around week 6 and 8. It has stopped now though. Didn’t have it in my other pregnancies.

For me the worst symptoms this time around is the god awful acne, the gas and bloating and the fact I absolutely cannot stand the vast majority of smells. I can’t even explain which smells, it’s the majority of smells... they make me heave.

Before I took the pregnancy test, DP rolled over in the morning to tell me he loved me and because I smelt his morning breath I Gipped in response Grin.

CathyandHeathcliff · 09/04/2018 16:54

I felt like I had the flu when I assume inplantation was taking place. Very flushed, warm face but also cold.

DwangelaForever · 09/04/2018 17:00

I'm currently 13+5 and I was so cold for weeks! I also had the static shocks too!

I weirdly go off reading when I'm pregnant which is annoying for me cause I'm a bookworm 😢 I've only read 2 books since I've been pregnant and usually I read around one a week!

TinyTerror1 · 09/04/2018 17:09

@JayneT2015 No I don't think I mentioned it to my midwife. I've only seen her once. Not entirely sure if that's normal, I think she might be off sick. I've had my thyroid checked quite a lot in the last 10 years and it's always fine Hmm

I just saw another thread and remembered my other slightly odd symptom which is being incredibly itchy, especially my lower back and my legs. I did mention that to the midwife and she said it should be fine but if it got worse to see the gp. E45 itch cream seems to work though.

TeachingPuffin · 09/04/2018 17:29

@JayneT2015 Feeling less cold now. I always get cold quickly, but at least it's no longer so bad I need to wear tights under my work trousers when the heating is onSmile

My sister (due any moment now) also said her nausea got worse before getting better, so I'm crossing my fingers! I spoke to the GP today and there's not much they can do, other than prescribe medication off-label, which I wouldn't feel comfortable with.

Just thought of another random symptom: really loud hiccups! At random moments in the theatre.

And YY to husbands with stomach-turning morning breath!

HibbityBlibbity · 09/04/2018 21:00

For my first 8 weeks or so I was freezing all the time too, but now I’m 11 weeks and I’m getting the typical hot flushes.
I also have the fanny daggers loads (love that phrase, it describes them perfectly!) I started with them before I even did a test and still get them now but not as much.
For me I can’t stop itchy my legs and buttocks, it’s mad. Especially worse when I’m trying to sleep!
And dry skin to my face as if I have a goatee. Literally just there.

Sunshinesaz86 · 09/04/2018 21:43

My strange symptom which is what made me test, was I had tiny red pinprick dots all over my skin, my arms legs stomach not covered maybe about 20! When I googled it it all linked too later pregnancy rather than early and extra blood flow etc!! After a few days they went but I was indeed pregnant and I’ve never had it before!

Girlwiththearabstrap · 09/04/2018 21:51

@TinyTerror1 I had the cold nipple pain in both pregnancies! This time round it's lasted quite a long time! I googled it and found that you can get Reynauds disease in your nipples!

student26 · 09/04/2018 21:54

Not as unusual as I first thought but PUPPPS! A horrific itchy rash that covered my body apart from my boobs, neck and face. An itch that made you want to peel your skin off with a rusty, blunt potato peeler. It was there about three weeks before I gave birth and came back with breast feeding. Went away with steroid cream and antihistamine. Horrible! Rarer in second pregnancies so hoping I'll be lucky next time.

LeighaJ · 09/04/2018 23:50

In the first trimester my breasts, especially nipples were freezing cold all the time, even though I was warm everywhere else. No amount of layering or blankets warmed them up.

WreckItRach · 10/04/2018 07:24

@JayneT2015 I had exactly the same in my first trimester. The static thing is so weird, I still get it occasionally now. I was also cold but that passed and turned in to getting random face hot flushes.

Oysterbabe · 10/04/2018 07:31

My hair changes colour when pregnant. My hair is light blonde but grows midbrown when I'm pregnant. I had 2 pregnancies in quick succession and have 2 bands of brown hair, which was the growth when pregnant.

cindersrella · 10/04/2018 07:32

I had a metal taste in my mouth, plus really restless legs and carpal tunnel in later pregnancy.

KTD27 · 10/04/2018 07:34

Sneezing. Every day between when I found out at 5weeks to 20 odd. Am now 26 and has stopped. Weird! First baby was heart palpitations. Thankfully all investigated and normal. Does weird things to you that’s for sure

JayneT2015 · 10/04/2018 09:28

@oysterbabe oh wow that is an unusual one, imagine it's hard trying to hide that one if you didn't want to tell anyone you were expecting!

@LeighaJ @girlwiththearabstrap ouch the cold nipples sounds sooo uncomfortable! I've not had sore boobs/nipples this time round which i found odd but apparently is quite common in 2nd pregnancies.

Glad to hear that the cold thing passes, i don't have any of the other symptoms of hypothyroidism but i will mention it when i get my booking in appointment just incase - i don't think it helps that the weather is so naff, it was summer last time i found out i was pregnant so maybe why.

@KTD27 oh never heard of that one either! Bet it's a relief that it's stopped, it's so annoying when you have a sneezing fit. It certainly does do weird things. I had the heart palpitations first time too, they can be frightening can't they?

It's so strange how it affects us all differently. I do love hearing about all these weird symptoms!

@DwangelaForever so weird that you said about books. I normally read a book or more a week and have barely read anything whilst pregnant. It's very odd for me too but I guess it is just fatigue.

headstone · 11/04/2018 06:42

I've had the hot flush aound implantation time. I had it with my 2nd andI noticed it again this time. It only lasted around 5 minutes.
