Terrified of pre eclampsia but too early?

Hi all, I’m really hoping for some advice. I’m 16 weeks pregnant, and just for background this is my second pregnancy as the first ended in an ectopic. I have been so worried all the way through this one, at first we thought it was another ectopic but it isn’t.

Anyway about ten days ago I woke up to an absolutely awful headache and terrible nausea, they lasted all day and at lunch time I felt my vision was blurring. I went to the GP and he took my blood pressure and said all was fine and it was likely a virus and/or severe tiredness (I had been sleeping very poorly).

I had mild headaches daily for the following week but nothing as bad. However today I woke up with a niggling pain under my left rib which won’t go away.

I know it is so rare to get pre eclampsia this early. I need to snap out of this fear but it is so hard. I will talk to my midwife about my anxiety but as it’s Sunday; can anyone indulge me by telling me if they have had similar symptoms this early, and what the outcome was?

Many thanks in advance!

I had bad headaches in the first trimester it was just hormones. And like most people I had nausea. It went away.

But do speak to your midwife.

Thanks Clare! I will speak to them tomorrow I think. I think it’s the blurred vision and the rib pain that’s most worrying me at the moment. Thanks for your advice!

I get blurry vision with hay fever sometimes. Like you say your GP already said it was fine and it's unlikely at 16 weeks, but you won't feel better until you've talked to your midwife so do.

And if you feel fobbed off ask to come in and be checked over. We're our babies advocates while pregnant (and afterwards).

Sorry about your previous loss. It does make subsequent pregnancies quite anxiety filled.

I'd see your GP about your rib pain. I had similar at around the same gestation and it turned out to be pleurisy (ie inflammation following what had been a really mild cold) but they did listen to my chest and do some checks.

Pre eclamptic rib pain is on the right as it's caused by liver inflammation. The vast majority of cases occur well after 20 weeks and occur with very high blood pressure so as you say, speak to your midwife at the next appointment about tips to deal with the anxiety. Headaches are really common in pregnancy too.

Thanks @girlwiththearabstrap*, great musical name too! I didn’t know that about it being on the right, that does make a big difference! On NHS it just says ‘pain under ribs’. Very reassuring, thank you.
