How have I gained so much weight already?

I’m around 8-10 weeks pregnant (scan next week to find out dates)
Before I found out I was pregnant I moved house, and when joining the new gp surgery they weighed me. This was on the 22nd of February and I was 74kg.

I weighed myself today and have gained 4kg. In 5 weeks!

I’ve not been eating extra, probably a bit less in fact. No coffee or coke due to caffeine so less sugar. How has this happened 😭😭😭

When I was pregnant with my 9 month old ds I didn’t gain a pound until I was 22 weeks, and then only put on 1 stone during the whole pregnancy, and he was 9lb of that!

My lower back and hips are achy which I’m presuming is caused by the weight gain. I’ve not got a bump but I’ve a mum tum anyway so couldn’t see it if it was there.

No point to this post but just wanted a rant. I’m gonna be one of those women who gain 10 stone in pregnancy aren’t I 😭😭😭Sad

Not sure if this makes you feel any better, but when I went to my first booking appointment, I was 2kg heavier than I usually am - I had no idea why as had been feeling horrendous and not eating much at all! By the time I went to my first scan less than 4 weeks later, it had come back off again (including another 1kg from barely eating) - my midwife said she suspected the extra weight at the start was from water retention. Possible at least some of the weight gain may be that for you too.

Either way, really don't beat yourself up about it Flowers

If your weight gain definitely isn't due to too many calories, I guess there's not much you can do. Any chance you are moving around less? You might be eating less but if your exercise had significantly reduced, this could be a cause of weight gain?

5kg is an awful lot in 5 weeks, especially that early in pregnancy. I'm 8 weeks and I've gained 3lbs which midwife said is about right.

I would definitely recommend having a chat with doc. If you put on too much weight, you are at a higher risk of pre-eclampsia and gestational diabetes.

Chances are you'll be fine but best to be checked. All the best and congrats!

Ds has just started crawling and climbing everything so I’m probably running about more than usual, but come to mention it, in my last pregnancy I was working 60 hour weeks at work in a manual job whereas this time I’m still on maternity leave, so it could be to do with that. I was actually expecting to get on the scales and to have lost a bit tbh due to cutting down on sugar so it’s really shocked me!

Really hoping it’s just water retention. Think I’ll have to join slimming world if it’s not

Oh god yes, that was me.
I'm not slim, my BMI sits at about 27. And when I got pregnant it was that, I remember. Ten weeks later, booking in appointment, it was 30!!! So I was high risk etc, the midwife I'd not believe me I had gained so much.
I could only eat really salty food, otherwise I threw up. I retained so much water, I didn't poo properly. It was horrible. I then lost it all once I was in the second trimester. I ate better and healthier, so the fluid went and I went back to normal bowel habits.
