Not saying I would was just wondering did anyone?

I found the best method was to get a big glass, have a few sips, then have DH take a few big ones when noone's looking, and move around the room holding the drink a lot. That worked for the big party I attended - I hugged a half empty pint of beer all night and noone noticed it's the same one.

For a more private dinner, say you don't feel like it and then everyone will go "AHA that's why!!" when you tell them.

I think a small drink occasionally has not been proved to be harmful. But if you'd rather not drink, don't be peer pressured.

MozzchopsThirty · 31/03/2018 17:56

I did, but it was very different when I was pregnant
On holiday the waiter gave me a shot of port every night, claiming it was good for baby 🤔

On ds1 I had a thing for red wine, and Guinness
I'd have one or the other 2-3 nights a week

IWouldLikeToKnow · 31/03/2018 17:58

I had a glass of champagne at a wedding and a half glass of wine once when out at a dinner. Other than that I abstained.

Sashkin · 31/03/2018 17:58

Bigmouth I was admonished in Starbucks for ordering normal coffee not decaf, and given disapproving looks in a pub for ordering a non-alcoholic lager.

Some people are just super-judgy Hmm

delilabell · 31/03/2018 18:01

Not saying anything about anyone on this threadt butt my ds (adopted) has fasd. Therefore when ibwa pregnant with dd i didn't touch a drop (not even in chocolate liquors! Blush )
I don't see the problem with people drinking sparingly but for me, due to situation i wanted to have a completely clear conscience.

DullAndOld · 31/03/2018 18:03

tbh I didn't want to, drunk people annoyed me and the smell of alcohol was unpleasant. Which was odd as I was a bit of a piss head pre kids.

I did have the odd can of Guinness but on the whole stuck to orange juice. That was OK in 1998.

Bojangles33 · 31/03/2018 18:10

Out come the judgers 🙄

Personally I think if you want to have one drink now and again there is no issue with that, it's just that so many people don't understand the concept of units so no medical professional will say "x number of units a week is ok."

I think that people who eat foods with a chance of listeria are taking a bigger risk - that literally only takes once for something to happen. It's sustained alcohol consumption that's an issue. People who say you're an alcoholic are just being ridiculous.

Bojangles33 · 31/03/2018 18:13

That said though, I wouldn't drink just to cover up or because someone else expects it. But I think if you want one drink then that's perfectly ok.

Ninjamilo · 31/03/2018 18:36

Those saying why take the risk for one drink - can you please link to the research that says there is a risk from the occasional drink?

And by that, I mean actual research, not garbage from a biased website.

totallywicked · 31/03/2018 18:39

I did. One or two glasses once or twice a week was the latest NHS advice.

PinkAvocado · 31/03/2018 18:48

No. I don’t in any way need alcohol or crave it so there was no reason to. We have never particularly been drinkers so it wasn’t really even a conscious effort. I still don’t drink alcohol in case I ever need to drive and I know that sounds over cautious but I don’t like alcohol enough for it to ever be a contender.

PerfectlySymmetricalButtocks · 31/03/2018 18:49

No.

Poptart4 · 31/03/2018 19:08

One drink isn't going to do any harm.

I know people who carried on getting drunk every weekend through out their entire pregnancies and the children were fine. I'm not in any way recommending that!

But one drink a week should be fine. There's too much hysteria about this.

DullAndOld · 31/03/2018 19:15

I know someone that took an E when she was 7 or 8 months pregnant and went into labour...
Thinking bout it though, that child did have a FAS face as well.

K0013 · 31/03/2018 19:16

Thanks for posting this question, I have been very curious myself to people’s opinions on drinking. I myself was a big drinker before I found out I was pregnant but havent had any since bfp. I am currently sitting sipping a non alcoholic Budweiser and pretending it’s a real beer. I am in no way an alcoholic but there are times when I think that it can be such a stressful time for us ladies that it would be nice to be able to have a drink or two. I am undecided if I will have a small glass of something occasionally after 12 weeks.

CaptainBrickbeard · 31/03/2018 19:17

Taking Class A drugs is entirely irrelevant to a thread about single glasses of wine. And ‘FAS face’ is a particularly unpleasant and offensive turn of phrase.

DullAndOld · 31/03/2018 19:20

there is a FAS face though... google it if you like.

Years ago I worked with a girl whose mother had 'died of drink' and she had that face too. I have no intention of being offensive, just stating a fact.

Lauren83 · 31/03/2018 19:24

I had the odd wine at weekends or at weddings etc, funny some of the comments on here

CaptainBrickbeard · 31/03/2018 19:26

I am aware that there are specific facial features associated with FAS but how crass do you have to be to say someone has a ‘FAS face’? That’s really not an ok thing to say.

Also, why exactly did you bring up a pregnant woman taking Ecstacy on this thread about drinking small amounts of alcohol?

windchimesabotage · 31/03/2018 19:27

before I found out i was pregnant the first time I had gone on a drinking holiday to Prague with a load of friends!!!
Once id actually found out I had a glass of bubbly on new years day and half a pint of cider on my birthday and that was all.

This time round ive had a half of cider at my friends party and a glass of bubbly on new years again. Probably will have a glass of wine on my birthday.

Hypermice · 31/03/2018 19:28

FAS face

We’d say characteristic facies or facial characteristics associated with ...

FAS and FASD are somewhat of a spectrum - children who are very severely affected do have the facial characteristics of fas (and the underlying brain structure disruption, because what affects the face very often also affects the brain that’s developing under it.) children with FASD can be affected to a variety of degrees all the way down to very subtle inpairment.

I was 3 months pregnant before I found out, I'd been to a wedding, 2 football presentations and a family birthday. At all of them I was very drunk and also drank in the week (sounds bad but I was 19) once I found out I was pregnant I only had a glass of champagne at a wedding & a glass of wine New Year's Eve, I don't think it made any difference with my DS as he's now 12 and has no problems

PEARSON93 · 31/03/2018 19:36

I honestly don't think the odd small glass in special occasions does anything.

CaptainBrickbeard · 31/03/2018 19:36

Yeah, that’s better. So, why the Ecstacy story anyway?
