Odd measurements at 20 week scan

I've had my 20 week scan and they said as far as they can see everything's ok but baby's head and legs were measuring very small. He's on about the 10th centile. However his abdomen was measuring on 70th centile.

I wouldn't be too concerned about this if it weren't for the fact that we aren't short and everyone in our family is on the taller side. DH is 6ft 6, I'm 5ft 8 and DS1 is 16 months but still measuring on the 99th centile for height and weight. He was a big baby.

I've got a consultant appointment next week being high risk anyway because of my previous birth but I'm now googling all sorts and absolutely terrified something is wrong.

Anyone else have any similar measurements?

Haven't been in this position myself so can't offer any direct advice, however I would encourage you to remember a few things that might out your mind at rest.

Firstly, 2d scans are notoriously poor at giving reliable results.
Secondly, your results whilst seeming far apart, are all within a "normal" range.
Finally, baby still has PLENTY of time to grow.

Don't worry, I'm sure all it completely fine!

If they thought the measurements were an issue they would have told you at the scan / referred you to discuss further.

Try not to worry x

No real advice but please try not to worry. I know it’s easier said than done.
See what your consultant has to say and remember baby has time to grow.
I was told at my 20 week scan that baby had its heart on the wrong side of its body. I spent a week and a half worrying myself to the point of nearly being sick and being in tears frequently. The sonographer had made a mistake and baby’s heart is thankfully fine.

I had a similar incident at my 20-week scan and was frantic with worry. Honestly though, babies come in all shapes and sizes, and if the sonographer was worried then they would have sent you for further scans/testing.

If you're genuinely worrying yourself silly though, have a word with your midwife. Mine put my mind at rest.

Good luck with everything! :)

  1. They get these measurements wrong all the time. I have growth scans every two weeks and they often do a duff measurement, compare with last time, remeasure and come up with a totally different figure.

  2. As long as you're between 5th and 95th percentile there's no need to worry.

  3. My second twin has one measurement at 5th percentile (BPD) and another at 68th percentile (abdominal). Consultant is entirely happy. Last time these were 8th and 78th and she was happy then too.

Just wanted to say that when mum was pregnant with my brother, they commented that his legs were very short... He came out normal and now (he's 18) he's taller than any of us! HTH

Thanks for all your replies, it's definitely helped me.

She did say that my consultant will discuss results next week which left me a bit confused but surely she would have said something there and then if she was concerned.

I guess I'll have to wait and see what they say and hope that they send me back for a growth scan at some point.

Thanks again everyone x

@Thelampshadelady oh my gosh! You must have been worried sick. I'm so pleased all turned out ok and they got it wrong. Good luck with your little one x

My 20 week scan said that, I was expecting some massive bellied baby to come out! They also told me she was bound to be nearly 10 lb. She was 8lb 3 and all in proportion

I had this with my first baby. His femur bones were too short and I was worried sick. In and out for growth scans and it was all very trying and stressful. He is fine and now tallest in his class. Just had 24 week scan with second baby, again femur short but they didn’t bother getting me back for growth scans. Please try not to worry and STAY OFF DR GOOGLE!!
