What iron supplement to use?

Hi everyone,

I'm nine weeks pregnant with my first child. I had my booking in appointment last week, and yesterday got a call from my midwife to say that the results from blood tests taken at that appointment show my iron levels are low. She didn't say how low, but recommended I see a doctor and get on iron tablets.

Unfortunately doctors cannot fit me in until next Monday! So instead of waiting a week to do anything I've decided to try over the counter iron supplements until I can see a doctor. I presume they're not as effective as iron tablets from the doctor but surely they're better than nothing?

I actually feel pretty okay. Fairly tired, and I get a bit out of breath when going up the stairs too fast, but aside from that I feel fine.

What iron supplements do you lovely people recommend? I know some of them can have pretty gnarly side effects.

I like Floradix. Lots of people like Spatone but you have to mix it with orange juice.

You can buy ferrous sulphate tablets over the counter but if your levels are very low then the GP will prescribe something stronger. You could also look at your diet if you're not feeling too sick. Make sure that you don't drink tea when taking your iron supplements as the tannins inhibit absorption.
