I hope everyone suffering from the Horrors of Hyperemesis will find this thread useful as a source of support and information.
There's no TMI on here - can't be by definition - and nobody should feel ashamed of moaning as much as they feel the need to.
MOH's wonderful website is full of useful information on this illness:
sites.google.com/site/pregnancysicknesssos
Another invaluable website is:
www.pregnancysicknesssupport.org.uk
If you need help in obtaining medication, phone them on:
024 7638 2020
Lastly, the NICE guidelines on treatment are useful:
cks.nice.org.uk/nauseavomiting-in-pregnancy
I would like to thank everyone who has given such invaluable support and advice on this and on previous threads.
Remember when you are at your worst, 'This Too Shall Pass'. It really will.
So many women on this thread have thought they couldn't get through this, but they did.

yule I completely understand that. I hope to see you back soon saying you have your bfp but no hyperemesis. Good luck.

LucindaE · 21/03/2018 20:09

Yule Do keep us informed. All luck!
hotchoclolate Was it you who managed to dirnk a hot cholocate, as well? All this is very appropriate. Now I'm wondering about chocolate mousse for you, as just occasionally it worked for me. The cheapo stuff.
Seize I hope things are more or less bearable? and Anitidae I hope it is back to 'only' three times a day - that would be regarded, as others say, as quite severe on any other thread.
RockinRobin Good luck at the wedding.
Bored I so agree that Foodylicious must do her best not to overdo it. I hope you are managing too...

Some interesting new research:

Mustang27 · 21/03/2018 23:06

God damn you GDF15.

That's a promising article for all causes of sickness and nausea, especially for those receiving cancer treatment as it's bad enough without adding that to the mix.

Ah I see hot sorry not so long now it's nearly Thursday so only 4 more sleeps after tonight.

Good luck Yule. Hopefully see you back soon to give us bfp news and then even better news that you are feeling brilliant and glowey.

Hey seize hope you are well.

hotchocolate86 · 22/03/2018 07:00

I haven’t managed a hot chocolate yet lucinda but chocolate mousse does sound tempting. It might be something to try in a few days if I continue feeling a bit brighter. I’m still in bed at the moment but only only mild nausea. I’m hoping that’s a positive sign for today not being too awful.

I am very much looking forward to my scan mustang. I’m scared as I always am since having the miscarriages but I will be glad to find out if everything’s going ok. If it is then it will be lovely to have reached that 12 week milestone.

Gennz18 · 22/03/2018 09:29

Hello all, just popping into say hello. I am 26 weeks now and got complacent and let me ondansetron prescription run out. I thought surely I would be OK... hollow laughter

Power vomited and then had to leave work at 11am to come home and sleep until I could pick up my script at 4pm!! Thank god for meds! Made me feel very sorry for those who the drugs don't work for, I've been lulled into s false sense of security. Have 60 lovely ondansetron pills stashed away now which should almost see me through...

hotchocolate86 · 22/03/2018 16:33

A word of warning. Do NOT eat onion Bhajis however much you crave them.

Boredoftryingusernames · 22/03/2018 17:12

Sad hotchocloate can't imagine very pleasant coming back up.....

Anatidae thanks for sharing that link, really interesting.

After a pretty decent few days was up from 3.30am too nauseous to sleep and having to go and retch every hour or so. Been asleep all afternoon and trying to summon up energy to get up, still feeling very green.....

hotchocolate86 · 22/03/2018 17:22

It’s awful. I was feeling so well I thought I could get away with it but it was a very bad idea. Sorry to hear you are feeling too rough bored. HG is so unfair.

Mustang27 · 22/03/2018 17:31

You crave a lot of curry linked things please tell me you also follow with ranitidine. I love spicy food but in pregnancy it was in the no go list very jealous but not of your bhaji vom.

Sorry you are feeling unwell again Gennz but glad you have your ondansetron supply again.

hotchocolate86 · 22/03/2018 18:05

It’s strange because normally I only eat spicy food occasionally but I could eat it every day at the moment if I dared. I do make sure to take ranitidine after but I’m not sure if I should actually give into the cravings.

Foodylicious · 22/03/2018 19:28

I have spent most if the last two weeks craving curry or Chinese!
But by the time I get round to thinking about cooking or ordering it, I have either left it too late to cook (Just makes me feel sick) or looming at a list of stuff on a menu I feel overwhelmed and then sick and past the craving (and the fear of post take away vom gets too strong)

Mustang27 · 22/03/2018 19:55

Foody you described most evening perfectly for me during pregnancy. I'd dream of food then if maybe get a takeaway menu out and just find it all to bloody daunting and go stick some gf bread in the grill and do cheese on toast lol

Foodylicious · 22/03/2018 20:10

Yeah, put a load of med veg on earlier to roast, but had to then eat a cheese sandwich to stave off the nausea.
Now it us cooked I can't stand to eat anything and OH has just gone in to the other room to eat his tea.
Will make myself have a bit of toast before bed.

Going to try upping Promethazine at the weekend and will just have to take it steady next week at work if I need to.
If I don't up it soon I'm going to end up off sick soon anyway.
I keep forgetting to take the bit b6 and
Shock have been a but shit with pregnavare so often take two tabs every two days.
Not ideal I am sure.

But 12 weeks tomorrow!!! Fx all is well in there. Can't wait till (and am dreading) scan on Thursday

LucindaE · 22/03/2018 20:16

Gennz18 Surely I know you, or is the name just similar? If not then welcome, and as you have been doing so well on Ondansetron, I am sure you have no need of my 'have you got kesostix' and 'how do you find ice lollies, flat full sugar coke, the juice of tinned fruit etc' messages, though I believe the tinned fruit works well as a laxative too for the Ondansetron. Sorry you couldn't come off it without a bad relapse, but you had to try!
hotchocolate Aagh, Onion Bharjis would be horrific on the way up.
Good advice from Mustang about an anti acid. I was put off pasta bake for years by it reappearing - it left lurid stains on the wardrobe on which OH later commented... Much sympathy over pervious mc's spoiling everything. The chances are massively on your side, even with three consecutive miscarriages, but it is still nerve wracking.
Bored That sounds awful. Gentle cyber pats on offer. Being sick in the middle of the night is so dismal.
Anitidae That is fascinating research. Anecdotally, I have noted that Hyperemesis sufferers tend to get menstrual migraine or other menstrual problems or pattern of migraine, often a tendency to cystitis, and there seems to be a higher than average history of miscarriage, though not usually recurrent. But that is anecdotal from this thread and others. Whether that is part of the same thing..
Foodylicious Oh dear; that about sums it up.
Apologies to anyone rudely overlooked...

Anatidae · 22/03/2018 20:30

Yes I get migraine - I’d be interested to see what if any link there is. As with so much of reproductive biology the research is scarce.

Sharing my top tip for this week - non mint toothpaste! I’ve been really struggling with with brushing my teeth and today I found some kids strawberry flavoured stuff. I’d seen non mint adult ones but none had fluoride (I think this has lower levels but hey ho...) it’s the first time in months I’ve not vomited brushing - only a little retch.

LucindaE · 22/03/2018 21:08

Anitidae Sorry about the migrinaes - they are awful. I found that too about kids strawberry toothpaste (and a small toothbrush) - really sorry I so often forget to mention it, and cut short your suffering; I ought to include that in welcoming people.

Endora44 · 23/03/2018 08:25

Hi all. I haven't read back at all.

I was finally feeling well enough to go back to work last week, and am absolutely exhausted at the end of the day. (I teach kindergarten.) I decreased my ondansetron dose from 8mg 4x daily to just 4mg 2x daily, and it seemed to be working. I'm 19 weeks now. I saw my OB on Tuesday and she wants me off the ondansetron altogether, so I stopped taking for 3 days. Now I"m feeling so awful, have been sick for the first time in 2 weeks and nothing is soothing the nausea. So it's back on the pills for me, and I'm so frustrated with my OB for tampering with the meds when I had such a good thing going.

On top of everything, my mum very unexpectedly suffered a stroke last week. Thankfully, she has woken up, is breathing on her own, and yesterday she passed a swallow test which means she can be fed. So we're moving in the right direction.

Boredoftryingusernames · 23/03/2018 09:39

Endorra sorry to hear about your mum, really hope she continues to make progress. Congratulations on getting back to work, even if it is exhausting. So frustrating about the med change, I think stopping at 19 weeks does seem really optimistic of her, hope you don't have to go too high with the dose to calm things down again.

LucindaE · 23/03/2018 10:03

Endorra I can only echo Bored. Health professionals often try and take suferers off meds and you understand why they feel obligted to try, but it so often causes a relapse. Try and take it easy as much as you can, difficult as that is. So sorry about your mother. That sort of worry and grief is draining enough in itself.
Bored I hope no more early hours puking - that is so dismal?

hotchocolate86 · 23/03/2018 10:09

Sorry to hear about your Mum endorra. I’m glad she is making progress. I hope you start feeling better again soon.

How’s everyone feeling today?

I was up at 5.15 again. I feel exhausted and queasy. I hope I can get some rest at some point.

hotchocolate86 · 23/03/2018 11:17

I am having trouble getting my ondansetron again. The hospital are saying I need to get it from my GP but my GP surgery won’t prescribe it. I feel really stressed by it. I had this problem through most of my last pregnancy too.

LucindaE · 23/03/2018 11:25

hotcholocate I am really sorry to hear of this. I hope they manage to sort it out. This seems to happen to many sufferers, and it really isn't good enough. They ought ot be able to co-ordinate their acts, somehow. Some GP's seem to claim that they can't prescrible Ondansetron...

OP posts:
hotchocolate86 · 23/03/2018 11:45

Hi lucinda I have just looked at the prescribing guidelines for ondansetron. I am on the border of two counties and the county I have picked to have the baby in has ondansetron classed as an amber3 drug which means GPs can prescribe it even without visiting the hospital first as long as they follow certain guidelines. The county I live in and that my doctors surgery is in has ondansetron classed as a red drug and this means only hospital specialists can prescribe it for hyperemesis. I am wondering whether I should change to a hospital in the same county as my GP as then I could get the ondansetron presumably from the hospital without issue. But of course I am scared they will say I don’t need it and refuse to prescribe it for me and I will then have no way to get hold of it. That’s a scary prospect as I was on it until the day I gave birth in my last pregnancy. It’s so frustrating.

LucindaE · 23/03/2018 11:52

hotchocolate My goodness, that is such a difficult decision, that I don't want to make any suggestions, save that the Pregnancy Sickness Support people on 024 7638 2020 may be able to ring you back with a good way of getting round it. So frustrating.
