Clary Sage?

Just wondering if anyone has any experience with using clary sage oil to induce labour?

I've heard numerous stories that it can set off contractions and can be a good natural labour inducer?

I'm 37 weeks and am due to be induced in a week and a few days, I'd much prefer for baby to make his appearance on his own accord before i get to this point.

I've heard apparently it's used by some midwives soaked on a pad on the tummy to also help with afterbirth!

Would be great to hear if this actually does help or if it's just another rubbish old wives tale!

Thanks xx

@Ragdolly81 hope things turn out for you! I'm just laid in my bath full of oil now then going to massage bump when I get out. Still not holding out much hope if I'm honest. I'm just drained today, keep sleeping constantly, aching everywhere, so so much pressure and constantly feel like I need to pooBlush(sorry tmi) !!

Well just massaged the tum - I now stink like a bush of nettles 🤮🤢 wow this stuff stinks!

I know @Ragdolly81 how funny!

Laid in bed now with terrible back ache - yet again.

I give up Envy

You need to get the babies head bouncing on your cervix to encourage oxytocin. Do get out of bed and go bounce on a ball or drape yourself over a beanbag or something. Lying down is the perfect way to slow things down - if that’s what you are aiming for! Both my 2 were spontaneous at 40+4 and 40+5. Both reasonably fast but enough time to get to mil, run the pool and have a water birth. I used clary sage bath and massage, plus everything else the internet suggested so no idea which/if any helped (probably none!!).

Ragdolly81 · 17/03/2018 20:24

Oh I feel your pain the back ache is the worst. The clary sage does stink doesn't it stink but if it works I will put up with any smell. I would happily roll around in horse muck if I thought it was a guarantee to bring on labor haha. So done now just want to meet her and be able to see my feet again lol.

Shaunieh95 · 17/03/2018 20:29

Thanks @adagio might have to go have an hour on the ball before i get to bed, although just have absolutely no energy today I feel crap

@Ragdolly81 me too 😂. I'll do anything although it does feel slightly better that at least I know I certainly won't be going to my due date, even if I would like him to come on his own before my induction!

Today is my due date a I have no expectations of going really as its almost unheard of to have them on your due date. Might go bring my birth ball up and watch TV while I bounce on it although I don't really want to go at night but just want to get things moving. Fingers crossed for you be nice to see some birth stories tomorrow

sammy891 · 17/03/2018 21:57

I've been using Clary Sage mixed with Almond Oil to massage bump for almost a week now and sadly nothing! Due tomorrow and also using the birthing ball to try and get baby to engage.

Loosemoose28 · 17/03/2018 22:43

Clary sage helps ripen the cervix, so when your body wants to labour it will be much more receptive.

You can use oil burners/ aromatisers
Couple of drops in a natural carrier oil as a massage
6 drops in bath with milk is best as disperses the oil
Or if you start contracting or cramping start burning it may help the flow of labour.

Shaunieh95 · 18/03/2018 13:57

Well I'm still pregnant 😂, any luck @Ragdolly81

Oh its awful just want it all over now. I m so ready to just have my little girl in my arms and have my body back to normal. I am defo having a woe is me day and I hate feeling like that. Its so strange even my fingers and toes feel achy. Can't think straight either as my head is so fuzzy. Here's hoping we all get to meet are little ones soon

Rikalaily · 18/03/2018 16:05

Clary sage works but only when your cervix is ripe and ready/almost ready to go. Before that it's fab for getting a good nights sleep, which is definately an advantage near the end when a good nights sleep is rare.

I used it with my 4th, my neighbours daughter was due before me so we shared a bottle. She used it first, on the 2nd day she went into labour (and delivered on my due date lol) It also took two days for me. We both added it to baths and then afterwards mixed it with almond oil and massaged it into our backs and bumps.

If you are having alot of crampy backache, it's likely baby isn't in a good position to get your labour going. Check out ways to turn a back to back baby, all fours etc, good luck Smile

Footle · 18/03/2018 20:21

Essential oils are not used neat for massage. They all need diluting with a much larger quantity of carrier oil, eg almond or grapeseed.

Pinkvoid · 18/03/2018 20:39

Oh god this stuff destroyed my home birth. I was burning it in my bedroom after reading about the good effects. A pregnant MW and a student MW turned up. The pregnant MW had an over-dramatic (imo) turn and despite us immediately stopping burning it, opening all the windows and doors (and she was downstairs, we’d only burnt it in my bedroom...) she insisted after a few hours of sitting in a completely different room she still felt funny so we would have to be transferred to hospital Hmm. Personally still think she couldn’t be arsed and wanted to go home but yeah, it totally destroyed my hopes of a home birth!

Not sure how well it worked. I burnt it every day whilst overdue and also rubbed a diluted amount onto my bump. But I also had a sweep and they work well for me so Grin.

Shaunieh95 · 18/03/2018 22:03

Thanks @Rikalaily baby is deffo in right position I've had a thinned cervix for over a week and a half had positive partus a few weeks and and been engaged also a few weeks. Also have weekly scans and baby's in perfect position just clearly doesn't want to meet me yet 😩!

@Pinkvoid aww! So sorry it ruined your homebirth! Not sure how it would have made her have a funny turn HmmConfused maybe you're right lol must have been nearer the end of her shift!!

I'm currently in night 3s bath with the oil and I'm not convinced it does work as hospitals been convinced my body's going to go into labour at any point now for over a week and a half so not sure they're really correct (although they do like keeping on reminding me - frustrating when you're still pregnant 🙄) the baby's been a naughty little munchkin from word go so no doubt he'll have me waiting until I'm induced!!!!

Shaunieh95 · 18/03/2018 22:05

@Ragdolly81 you any closer? Feel like I already know that answer to this question Blush

I'm getting so impatient I'm so ready to meet him 😩

thiskittenbarks · 18/03/2018 22:26

I was overdue (by 15 days in the end) with DS. I had clary sage in those infuser things all over the house from my due date onwards. Didn't appear to have any effect (along with all the other methods I tried). Worth a go though!

Shaunieh95 · 18/03/2018 22:53

@thiskittenbarks I can't stand the bloody smell i hate even bathing it in but I'm literally willing to try anything to get him to come naturally before my induction 😩! Really don't think it works though lol so think I may tick this off the list as another failed theory 🙈

OP posts:
Ragdolly81 · 18/03/2018 23:01

No no closer feel like she will be in there for the rest of my life. So ill and shattered but can't sleep. Hope everyone else is doing better than me.

Shaunieh95 · 18/03/2018 23:09

Sorry @Ragdolly81 had to have a little giggle at that comment Blush. I feel for you! At least it's one thing that I have the satisfaction that I definitely won't be going over due (sorry)

OP posts:
Ragdolly81 · 18/03/2018 23:24

Lol its ok I laugh myself if I didn't I would cry lol I am only 1 day over due but feel like I have been pregnant for years. Got my induction booked for the 27th but hoping to go sooner. I think she is to happy where she is she gets spoilt by my 5 year old singing to her kissing her and hugging her. He loves her so much already. I think I might have tonsillitis I get it a lot as it is so going to go the doctors tomorrow and see if they can do something for it. Last thing I want is to be ill if I go into labor

Ragdolly81 · 18/03/2018 23:39

By the way anyone else had there midwife tell them they might be struggling cause they are what is apparently know as a geriatric pregnancy I almost punched her haha.I thought I was having a hard time cause I am small but turns out they class me as a geriatric pregnancy I have never felt so old in my life.

Shaunieh95 · 19/03/2018 00:20

@Ragdolly81 aww bless him, I bet he cannot wait for the new arrival just as much as you! Aw no! I'm also usually one for getting that but touch wood I've managed to go a long while without it! It knocks you for six! Definitely get to the docs you don't want to be labouring with zero energy! And wow 😮 cannot believe she said that to you! I'm sure I read somewhere they class anything over 35 as 'geriatric' which I think is absolutely absurd!!!
