What exactly can you see in a 6 week scan?

That's it basically... I have had a few pains and a bit of spotting. Doc has sent me to EPAU just in case. Bit worrying but trying to put it to the back of my mind. They won't see me at 5+3, so booked in for a scan at exactly 6 weeks. I don't want to get my hopes up that I'll see a heartbeat, and also don't want to be disappointed and worried that I can't see anything, when actually all is ok. So my question... what exactly will I see at a 6 week scan? Any advice would be so greatly appreciated as I'm anxiety central at the moment! Thank you x

I have seen - a pregnancy sac with a foetal pole in it, no hb (ds1) and a foetal pole with a hb (ds2) and some pgs that didn’t last in between, no hb with them. So my answer doesn’t really answer, as there can be variety of appearance... It is definitely not the case that your symptoms mean a guaranteed mc if you are worrying about that. Best of luck Flowers

Thank you @Iggi999 - you say it doesn't answer, but it's useful! Pregnancy makes you a bit irrational so it's good to know it's norm not to see a heartbeat. Thanks again 🙏🏽

I had an early scan in both my pregnancies. They looked for a heartbeat and could see one too. This time around they showed me the little bean like shape flickering and said that there was a heartbeat which put my mind to rest. That was at 6 weeks. Does that help?

CalliopeMcPherson · 14/03/2018 19:04

@YoumeandlittleP it does! Thank you. I've never made it past 5 weeks before due to repeated miscarriage so never got to have a scan whilst baby was alive. Excited but nervous. Thanks again.

I went at 5+6 with my second child and just saw a sac - in obstetrician said it was measuring 5+1 but I knew that couldn't be right as my husband was abroad for two weeks and I'd thst was right then the sperm must have lived for around 10 days

Anyway by 10 weeks he was fine and there and arrived at 39+6 larger than life 8lb 15oz - way bigger than my first - from my original dating too (so he want visible at that first scan)
So what I'm saying is that if you don't see a foetal pole and sac don't be too worried

Good luck!

Thank you @flumpybear - must have been worrying being told 5+1! Fingers crossed!

I had an early dating scan at exactly 6 weeks as I wasn't sure on conception dates and saw a small circular shape with a flickering heart beat.

CalliopeMcPherson · 14/03/2018 19:24

@broad86 that must have been so exciting to see. Hope it all worked out okay for you.

This is mine at 6 and 3. Not much to see I'm afraid basically a kidney bean. Did manage to see HB though but was only tiny.

@RosieCotton how lovely! Thank you

This was 5+6. There was a heartbeat but sonographer said it had started hours before so it’s still hit and miss that early!

This time I had scans every other day from 4+4 for a few weeks and didn’t see a heartbeat until 6+3

I had an internal ultrasound at what I now know was 6 weeks and 6 days as I had been having spotting for about 10 days. They measured baby at 4.4mm and saw a heartbeat but there isn't that much to see tbh and the sonographer was routing around for quite a while to find the little one!
Keeping my fingers crossed for you that all is ok.

This was 6w + 2, could see the HB flickering away (though was well warned before hand not to be worried if we couldn’t as it was still early)
