3 out of 4 fingers engaged?

Hey all,

I'm 36+3 and today had a standard check up with my midwife. She told me I was 3 out of 4 fingers engaged. I get the whole engaged part. But never heard of it referred to as 3 out of 4 fingers?

To me that sounds awfully close to being closer to labour that I'd have expected just yet? Anyone else heard this?

Not freaking out or anything. Just curious about the phrase.

I was last week 3/5. Thought it was out of 5 the measurement. Also read they can dis-engage.

How close you are to labour is unrelated to how engaged the baby is. First babies in particular engage early.

My first was fully engaged at 31 weeks. Born at term.

Do you think she meant fifths and not fingers?

Bluebirdsky · 12/03/2018 21:10

It's usually done in 5ths i.e 1/5, 3/5 etc. I have never heard it done as fingers!

What did she write in your notes? I am 4/5 engaged, the higher the number the less engaged you are!

Sorry, no indication of when you'll go into labour! I was 3cm dilated and 4/5ths for a month before one of mine!

I was 4/5 this engaged at around 34 weeks with ds, went to 42 before anything started to happen!
