my midwife for first child was male,he was great.i actually prefered him to the females that popped in and out.and he popped in on our 3rd child too!i think dh liked having another male in room.

i had a male nurse there who was on some general training. it was his first ever birth - quite a violent forceps delivery too, poor chap - and he was so sweet to me, came to visit me when i was on the ward and gushed about the baby. the female midwives were much more blase.

Since midwives are few and far between here in my part of the US I can't comment, but one of my ob/gyns is male and I have to say that he has talked to me, and been more reassuring than the three females in the practice. He also does the best internals of any doctor I've had.
