41wks today, first baby, had a sweep this am and midwife said I'm 2cm dilated.
Anyone had this and gone into labour soon or have people still ended up being induced?

My obstetrician said she thought sweeps did work but when your body is ready - you sound pretty ready at 2cm dilated lol!

I had a sweep, stupidly, I didn't realise that because the baby wasn't engaged I could have had prolapse cord - so that was not something I had with my second after I found this out (silly junior doctor!)

flumpybear · 10/03/2018 13:04

Hope it happens for you, I recall it usually works within 24 hours if it's gonna Work but someone on here will give you better advice than me

Mummy2one2016 · 10/03/2018 13:05

I had three with my little boy and they all failed ended up being induced 12 days after my due date. Sorry not the best experience.

Twitchett22 · 10/03/2018 16:08

My mw said I'm not a 'lost cause' whatever that means lol had a sore back and sore bump for a couple of days now, feeling more tired and getting the odd period cramps so fingers crossed it will do something. On the bounty app it says half of women who have a sweep at 41 weeks go into labour within 24 hours but i think that sounds quite optimistic? I don't know. Definitely having tightenings but they're only uncomfortable when I'm sat down so I guess we'll see later. Trying to be hopeful but at the same time trying not to get my hopes up too much!

I had a sweep yesterday at 40+4, only 1cm dilated though. Nothing has happened yet unfortunately. Will have another early next week.

Smilingthru · 10/03/2018 20:40

I had a sweep at 40+2 with DD1. MW said t was unsuccessful as cervix was too high or something (can’t quite remember!) but the next day I felt weird and DD was born 4 days later. I don’t think it worked in the way it was meant to but I do think it got something going!! Currently 20+1 with DC2 and will def do it again if needed! X

Ummmmgogo · 10/03/2018 20:43

I had a sweep at 40+4. went into labour 40+6. good luck x

fruityb · 10/03/2018 20:47

I had one the day I went into labour - however I’d had a bloody show at 4am and contractions from 7am. She said I was 2cm and did the sweep anyway - I found it really unpleasant! My son was born the following morning but I can’t honestly say the sweep was the reason.

I’d never have another one - I bled constantly afterwards and felt thoroughly invaded! Which considering the amount of people who had a check that day is saying something. I really really didn’t like it!

Twitchett22 · 10/03/2018 20:49

@Smilingthru i had the same last week, cervix was too high and closed so couldn't do the sweep, but i did then have a bloody show and lost my mucus plug over a few days. Felt a huge relief when she told me i was 2cm today because i couldn't bare to hear my cervix was still closed lol. Lots of tightenings but not really any pain, just uncomfortable so i suppose we'll see how things progress overnight!

I had a sweep on my due date with dd1, nothing happened. Had another when I was 5 or 7 days over, nothing. I was 2cm dialated both times.
She finally came at 40+11 two days before my booked induction. I decided then they were a waste of time and I wouldn’t have another.

Dd2, I had a sweep due to low volume of waters at 38+2. I was going to be induced in 5 days time and I was told a sweep would make me more favourable for induction so I reluctantly agreed.
Sweep Thursday evening, mucus plug went Friday night, waters popped Sunday lunchtime but contractions failed to start so I was induced on the Monday, baby out in 5 1/2 hours start to finish. I was 2cm at that sweep as well!

I think it’s true that it will only work if your body’s ready.

mamahanji · 10/03/2018 20:56

Had had my first sweep at 38 weeks as I couldn't go overdue and wanted to avoid a c-section. I had a posterior and closed cervix that was barely 1cm dilated. 2 days later I had my second sweep and my waters broke that night.

It was very likely the sweep. I had been having mild constant contractions (not braxton hicks) for 2 weeks. And the first sweep got rid of my entire plug and the second sweep actually calmed down all contractions and cramps for 10 hours. And then my water broke.

sar302 · 10/03/2018 21:04

I had a sweep at 41+1 and was told I had an "unfavourable cervix" and to book in an induction for 41+5, as I was nowhere near ready Confused I promptly went into labour 5hrs later, whilst out for a sulk over a burger!

(My labour then went on to last for 50hrs though, so midwife wasn't technically wrong...)

rebelrosie12 · 10/03/2018 21:08

Had three with each of mine. Nothing worked. Except when I was being induced with no 2 and the pessary wasn't working the mw did a very forceful sweep and broke my waters by accident. That got things going. Btw- induction was FINE. Better than my other one which came on its own.

inappropriateraspberry · 10/03/2018 21:11

Had a sweep Thursday morning, cramps/backache all afternoon. Woke up Friday morning and gave birth on the toilet! MW said I was 1cm at the sweep, so all kicked off fast! He's now wingeing in his Moses basket!

Moonflower12 · 10/03/2018 21:26

I had a sweep at 39 weeks with my 3rd. (Symptoms of ore-eclampsia)
He was born 2 hours later. He's 20 now!

flumpybear · 11/03/2018 10:19

How are you doing this morning twitchett?

Twitchett22 · 11/03/2018 10:46

@flumpybear well i slept all night which i was pretty disappointed with haha but woke up this morning to a bloody show (and a big one at that). I know its not much to go off but i have a good feeling about today so we'll see!

You are in the baby business!

cheshiremama89 · 11/03/2018 11:11

2 failed and very painful sweeps as cervix was not "favourable".

Caused a lot of discomfort several hours after and bleeding.

Was kept in hospital for 4 days after DS was born with an infection, midwife ha said this could have been down to sweep x

KJE2017 · 11/03/2018 11:55

I had 3 sweeps all together one on my due date other 2 after. Did nothing for me

FranticallyPeaceful · 11/03/2018 12:38

I had two sweeps after my due date and both did nothing, I was also 2cm dilated for weeks before I was finally induced. Lovely experience though, both labour and birth were wonderful

KJE2017 · 11/03/2018 21:10

Hi op any updates?

Twitchett22 · 12/03/2018 01:21

My sweep definitely worked! 24 hours later waters broke, went to hospital and mw sent me home as i was only 2cm despite lots of close together strong contractions, baby delivered 15 mins later by AMAZING dp on our bathroom floor! Traumatic day to say the least but so worth it as I'm sat here cuddling my little girl
