Feeling guilty about bad diet in third trimester

I'm 37 weeks pregnant and feeling guilty over my terrible diet the last few weeks - I have been really hungry and just craving crisps, sweets, cake and so on for about 3 or 4 weeks, which on the whole I've given into.

I have struggled with really severe anxiety throughout pregnancy and this meant for a while I struggled to eat anything so at first I thought any calories were better than none and I was taking a prenatal vitamin, but now I'm concerned how this could affect the baby.

I've never had an abnormal urine test result and at my last growth scan baby was measuring normally and estimated around 6lb. Did anyone else eat lots of junk while pregnant and have a healthy baby?

It's really only these last few weeks which have been bad, in the first two trimesters I did eat much more healthily. I'm also drinking lots of milk and trying to make sure I have a healthy dinner with lots of veg each day so it's not all bad...should I try and cut the crap and just forget about these few weeks now??

I ate gherkins, fried chicken wings and monster munch crisps every single week of me being pregnant- not ideal I know - but I did always make sure I had a proper breakfast and dinner.
If you’re baby is healthy and you are ok then I didn’t see a problem with it; my weight, blood pressure etc was fine and I ended up with a 7lb 11oz baby :-) they thought she was going to be smaller - 5lbs - but she gained weight quickly towards the end ..... I personally tried to eat some extra fruit and veg whilst pregnant but didn’t get that much extra in.
Good luck! And congrats on the last few weeks of pregnancy! :-)

Do your best One day at a time. Don't hang onto the past.

I ate everything and anything, preferably the bad stuff, in all 3 pregnancies. All were reasonably big babies but healthy, and all hv’s have said unlikely to be my diet that caused their weight.

In fact I put on 5 stone in my last pregnancy Blush - a lot was fluid though tbf...

I had hypermesis and ate like crap the whole pregnancy as I only ate random things that I could tolerate

Don’t feel guilty - it’s you that will suffer not your baby! Your body will prioritise the baby so any short fall in nutrients is you going without not the baba

I maintain my baby was half twirl. And he was a beautiful, healthy baby. As long as you feel good and happy "internally" with what you're eating then it's all good. Grin

Hausmaus: just think about the diet of millions of pregnant women in developing countries where they might have a very limited diet if they're poor. 3 or 4 weeks of cake is not going to harm your baby.

This is the one time in your life you can eat whatever the hell you like, OP!!! obvs not if it's against medical advice / not safe to eat in pregnancy or you have diabetes / other illness etc as long as your taking your pregnancy vitamins eat the darn cake and feel no regret!! Baby will be perfect. Congrats btw !!

I could have written this! My third trimester has consisted of chocolate, fish finger sandwiches, McDonald's and biscuits.

I have tried to include a proper breakfast every day and vegetables and fruit juice but I just can't stop with the sweets!

Katyx3 · 10/03/2018 12:36

All I want is cake and Chinese! I'm 23 weeks tomorrow with my first!
Before being pregnant I would go a few days without eating at all, so midwife HV and psychiatrist all just happy that I'm eating :) x

I didn't touch a vegetable the whole 9 months. Had really bad heartburn and lived on carbs. If it wasn't bread or crisps I didn't want it. Had about 100 too many mc ds too. Your taste buds change in pregnancy, I couldn't stomach a lot of types of food. Post birth I've been eating healthy again. Don't feel guilty just make the most of it!

HausMaus · 10/03/2018 14:49

Thanks for the reassurance everyone, I feel less guilty now! Going to try and cut down a bit but won't stress about having treats now and again :)

The baby gets nutrients from your body. That's why it's advised to take calcium - it's to replace the calcium leached from your own bones and teeth. If you're taking vitamins, you'll be OK and the baby will be just fine.

I ate packets and packets of haribo. My little boy is perfect.

I'm 21 weeks pregnant, this baby is made out of frazzles.

If your test results are fine sounds like your body isn't lacking anything. Don't put yourself under so much pressure
