How long did your induction last?

Been in for 15 hours now and not even the slightest twinge... they've even stopped checking on me.
I assumed with induction I'd be in some intense pain then out quite quickly.
How long did your inductions take? I'm so bored!

I'm just home from having a medical induction at 37 weeks with baby 2. 36 hours start to finish. Pessary gave me on-off contractions very quickly but didn't establish labour or dilate me across 24hrs, manual breaking of waters increased contractions but they were weak so syntocin drip 2 hours later. 7 hours on syntocin drip with TENS, 3cm dilation. Epidural installed, I dilated fully and delivered baby in a further 3 hours. So precisely 36 hours total, 10 hours from the start of the drip.

Had I been closer to 40 weeks I don't think anything more than the pessary would have been needed, but had it been my first baby I wouldn't have been surprised if it had failed totally. An induction is significantly more likely to take for a 2nd or subsequent baby.

Sad

Not filling me with hope!

Just waiting on them coming to inspect me. Will only be happy at 9cm dilated Grin

I had the synthetic oxytocin drip and that took 4 hours to get started (they had to break my waters to get things going).
Once that started it took me 19 hrs.

Can you request they put you on the drip since you have been waiting so long for the pessary to work?

Plasticgold · 09/03/2018 21:28

8 hours from pessary to holding baby (number 2). Moving around helped, I was pacing corridors and up and down stairs as soon as the hour of lying still was up.

Glassofredandapackofcrisps · 09/03/2018 21:30

Ha! The main reason I opted for a c section over induction was so I wasn't wasting time in hospital! Funny how we all approach the same situation differently? Good luck hope it happens soon x

Lulu2515 · 09/03/2018 23:19

glassofred we must all get sold it differently!
On pessary number two and still nothing... And also been told there's a long wait for the Labour ward to have my waters broken anyway. Looks like I'm moving in!

DC1 - 3 days from pessary to birth, 17 hours of active labour, inc 2 hours of pushing. Forceps delivery.

DC2 - 18.5 hours from pessary to birth, 2 hours active labour in 10 mins of pushing. Natural delivery but he was in the wrong position.

There's no rhyme or reason. It can all change very quickly once you get started! With DC2 they examined me at 7am and I was 1cm, examined me again just after 8am and I was 7cm, so they had to wheel me down to the labour ward fairly sharpish Grin

Looking forward to hearing your birth update OP!

DeepestDarkestRiver · 09/03/2018 23:47

5 hrs 20 mins from start to finish for DC2. I wanted pain relief as DC1 came too quickly for me to have it, but once again it was all too fast Angry.

Went on wed morning and my little boy was born Sunday night!! Hang in there, baby will be here before you know it. Good luck cxx

PinkAvocado · 10/03/2018 00:22

I too had no idea it could be so long!!! Good to know though to manage expectations I guess.

Hawkmoth · 10/03/2018 00:24

6 hours, but what PP said... lots of walking. And also it was probably a hypersensitive reaction so not ideal.

user1485778793 · 10/03/2018 00:43

Mine took 4 days when I was 36 weeks. It was so boring. I had 2 steroid injections 24 hours apart, 2 pessaries, on the 4th day they broke my waters and nothing happend. I was put on the drip and baby arrived after a very intense 30minute labour, I only pushed a few times for less than 2 minutes

Lulu2515 · 10/03/2018 01:22

Ooo I wouldn't mind a 2 minute pushing labour... although I bet that was super intense for you!
My mucous plug has just come out major vom

@Lulu2515
Get on the ball girl! That's what I did when my plug came out from induction! It popped my waters and within 30 mins was being taken to labour ward!

pregle · 10/03/2018 03:42

Oh you poor thing!
With me was 48 hours from start to finish. Pessary at 1am on the Tuesday night, no twinges or anything, taken out after 24 hours then over the course of the next 18 hours had 3 gels...some twinges, lots of walking. Thursday night at 10pm taken to labour water for my waters to be broken, once that happened baby was out in 2 hours, Friday morning at 1am.

No time for epidural in the end.

Because it was my first baby and I wasn’t in any pain until my waters were broken I didn’t mind it taking that long at all (did lots of walking, listened to music, watched cold feet box set until episodes got too sad) but like you with a dc at home this time I think I’d be in a hurry for it to be done quicker!

I am pregnant with no 2 and have it on my notes already that I want an epidural this time, it got very intense very quickly.

The very very best of luck, hopefully you’ll be holding your baby in no time!

Someonehelpmi · 10/03/2018 03:49

Had the pessary in which did nothing and I felt nothing at all not even cramps. I was then waiting on the ward for a futher 2 days until a bed was available, once I was taken down to the delivery ward they broke my waters and put me on the hormone drip and was there from 8-4.30 with the whole thing happening pretty fast Smile good luck with everything and hope you have your baby snuggled in your arms soon x

MsJuniper · 10/03/2018 04:59

Sorry you are feeling the frustration! I think there is an issue of women being given the impression that quick induction is guaranteed.

When I had DS I went for induction at 38wks due to gestational diabetes. I was firmly told it was dangerous for him to stay in longer as the placenta could fail, so if the induction didn't work after 3 days I would be recommended a cs.

The reality was I went in at 7am Tuesday, had the 24 hr pessary, then 2/3 further treatments. I was having mildly painful contractions from Tuesday eve but I was never more than 1cm. I had a birth ball and spent hours pacing the corridors.

The Friday consultant seemed unconcerned and said I could go home and try again next week. By then I was worrying about the placenta and a bit crazy from being stuck in hospital and all the contractions. I was finding internals increasingly painful and she was really rough. A lovely mw overheard and said she would speak to someone about how I was being treated and suddenly it was all change and I was being prepped for theatre.

The cs was a wonderful calm experience and I had my DS placed straight onto my chest, established bf and was home after 2 nights.

Now at 36+4 with DC2 I have declined induction and am booked for a cs at 39 wks.

I'm hoping while I've been writing and remembering this that you've had lots of smooth progress and are soon holding your baby. Good luck!

Lulu2515 · 10/03/2018 05:01

Oh i haven't seen any balls anywhere.

I've seen on the board that there's at least one lady ahead of me to get her waters broken.

In other news... aibu to ask DP to bring my hair straighteners in?

Start 9 am Friday morning, my daughter was born Sunday lunchtime. It properly kicked off Sunday 12.30 am

Bluesnail · 10/03/2018 06:29

Don't have any induction experience I'm afraid as I am pregnant with my first, but I wanted to wish you the best of luck @Lulu2515! How is it going? You will be holding your lovely baby very soon Grin

YuleABUnREASTIEable · 10/03/2018 07:25

Went in to hospital on Monday morning and after nothing for 5 days had a csection on Friday evening. Not exactly how dh planned spending one of his 2 weeks maternity leave! Wishing you positive and speedy thoughts and hope you’ve got lots to do to help the time go by!

GransGloves · 10/03/2018 07:30

Good luck!

Me: 50 hours. Pessary, waters broken, syntocinon, epidural, EMCS.

My Dsis: 12 hours. Pessary, paracetamol, baby. Envy

DaisyLand · 10/03/2018 07:38

Doctor recommended me induction over C-section as baby was heading down. After this thread ... might need to buy more snacks for the hospital

Op good luck hope things have started kicking

JaneEyre70 · 10/03/2018 07:41

My DD was induced with all of hers, she was had her waters broke at 3am with her 1st, baby arrived at 7am Shock. Other two were the same. Longest wait was for the bed on labour ward!

springmachine · 10/03/2018 09:31

24 hours and after that they finally decided to do a csection as there was no progress. In all that time I got to 3cm.

I never imagined having a csection but was so relieved as was exhausted by that point
