Induction for overdue baby

Hey, i’m currently 4 days overdue with my 41 week appointment on Tuesday when I’m 8 days overdue. I’m a first time mum and getting the constant stream of “where’s baby” and “are you having a induction?” texts. So far I’ve wanted to wait and see, i’ve had cramping for almost 2 weeks but its’ not led to anything and I don’t feel baby will be here soon. I will try the usual home remedies (walking, sex, curry etc) and I think i’ll agree to my first sweep at 41 weeks but have no idea what the plan is after that. Any thoughts from others who have been /will be in this position? My community midwife isn’t very helpful so I need to have a plan for when I go to the appointment.

If everything about the pregnancy is low risk then women are usually offered induction around 12 days overdue.
These are the NICE guidelines that show what is recommended nationally and why: https://www.nice.org.uk/guidance/cg70/chapter/1-Guidance#information-and-decision-making

You don't have to say yes to induction but there are some potential risks to going more than 14 days overdue (see NICE guidance) and the doctor will make you aware of these. If you don't want to be induced they will usually ask you if you will come in for extra scans/monitoring to make sure that the baby is ok and then all being well you wait for labour!
Fingers crossed it won't come to that and you will go into labour soon Smile

Thanks for this! Me and my partner will discuss over the weekend. My midwife doesn’t advise on anything and just runs the test each appointment. It’s so hard to know what to do for best, but as you say hopefully baby will make the decision anyway! Smile

I'm 6 days overdue today, going to have a sweep this weekend and my mw has booked me in for induction when I'll be 12 days over just in case nothings happened. I was convinced yesterday was the day, lots of pains although no pattern to them, cramping, sharp pains down below, so was expecting a restless night but nothing! Back on my ball today, hoping to start before needing the sweep but always seems to be false alarms! Good luck hopefully you'll start yourself before it gets to induction!

Good luck Twitchett22! It’s taken me by surprise by how anxious it is going overdue! I’m trying to keep busy whilst making the most of the child free chill time!

I know, i think subconsciously I've always had it in my head that I'd have her a week or so early so now she's a week late I feel reaaalllyy fed up. I also keep thinking the later she is the bigger she'll be and that terrifies me! But also have to keep telling myself there's literally nothing i can do about it so chill out. This time next week it will all be over hopefully!

I agree, our baby has been tracking at the top of “normal” for being a big baby. So I felt the same and thought he’d be early/on time. Had a scan on Weds and he’s meant to be just over 9Ilbs so a good size but not massive. I’m clinging onto big baby’s coming out quicker as gravity and their weight pushes them out Wink
