My sister was told she was having a girl but has just given birth to a boy...

My sister had 3 different scans by 3 different people and they all told her she was definitely having a girl. She decorated the nursery with a fairly girly design and received lots of baby girl clothes from friends and family etc. The name was picked out too.
She’s just given birth 2 hours ago and has had a baby boy. He must have had his bits tucked well away during the scans. She’s obviously still very happy and overjoyed with him but I think she’s shell shocked as she felt like she was bonding with a daughter when he was still inside her.
I’ll definitely be leaving it for a surprise when I have one as even though this outcome must be very rare, it just goes to show they don’t always get it right

Meant to also say has this ever happened to anyone else before?

This happens more often than people realise

AmysTiara · 07/03/2018 14:01

I know 2 people who were told they were having a girl and actually had a boy. I don't know anyone the other way round though.

Purplerain101 · 07/03/2018 14:02

Yeah I think it would be very unlikely to be told you were having a boy and for them to get it wrong. Easier the other way round though as he could have his bits tucked between his legs

It happened to a family friend and is the reason I don't want to find out through the scan! It threw our friend completely, although she laughed about it later.

I’m a midwife and I’ve known it happen twice in the last ten years to ladies I’ve looked after.

Most confusing one was really premmie twins and I never looked at what was between this baby’s legs as was so busy resuscitating the one I was give. Both twins went down to scbu who rang me on the labour ward a bit later very confused, wanting to know had mum definitely been told both were boys. Ie by amnio, as they thought one was a girl.....guess they were so premmie It was hard to tell.

Mum was delighted when I went and broke the news.

Very jealous that you’re a midwife. Must be such a rewarding job!

I know someone who was told she was having a boy and had a girl.
This is why at scans they’ll never say they’re 100% sure.

FloydOnThePull · 07/03/2018 14:09

It happened to my mum's friend.

When we went for our 20 week scan my Dad said to me, if they tell you it's a boy then you're having a boy, if they tell you it's a girl then you might be having a girl.

Congratulations on your new nephew!

Chienrouge · 07/03/2018 14:10

if they tell you it's a boy then you're having a boy

Not necessarily, as my friend’s experience shows!

FuckyDucky · 07/03/2018 14:11

My friend had this. Had a name picked out, clothes bought and then a baby boy arrived. I had my DD a few months later though so the clothes went to a grateful home!

Purplerain101 · 07/03/2018 14:11

Think it goes to show that if you get told at the scan what the sex is then it’s still wise to get mainly unisex items for new borns just incase

What a lovely surprise!

Here's hoping she's gender neutral enough to tough it out and use the stuff.

Purplerain101 · 07/03/2018 14:14

I think she’ll still use some of the clothes she’s been given other than a couple of sleepsuits which say “mummy’s girl” and “daddy’s girl” on them

I'm having twin boys and I can't think of one thing that wouldn't be useable if it turned out one was a girl. Babygros are babygros.

I guess slightly different if I had a wardrobe full of tutus and tights.

Coffeethrowtrampbitch · 07/03/2018 14:15

Yes when I had dd the lady in the next bed had had a little boy when told she was having a girl, I think she'd had 2 scans.
He had a pink pram and the name Isla picked out, his parent called him Max.
They were overjoyed but obviously initially surprised at the mistake!

Twitchett22 · 07/03/2018 14:15

Oh hell, my 20 week scan was a 'pretty certain' its a girl, and had a 3d scan at 27wks where the first thing she said was 'well its definitely a girl' but this thought has been in my head the whole time. Everyones told me I'm being stupid but there's something niggling in my mind saying she might be a he! I just want it to be healthy but I've kind of bonded with a girl now and she's got so many girly things! (although at least big stuff like pram and car seat are neutral). Im 4 days overdue so hopefully will see soon!

Thistlebelle · 07/03/2018 14:16

This happened to a colleague of mine. They already had a daughter so you’d have thought they would have been pleased about a son (and they were eventually) but it took them a while to get used to it. They’d been referring to the bump by a girl's name for months.

Our local hospital will no longer tell you the sex at the scan apparently because they got it wrong once some years ago and the couple initiated legal action.

TheQueef · 07/03/2018 14:16

Good for her. I bet it's all brand new for her.

CobaltRose · 07/03/2018 14:19

I was supposed to be a boy Grin

Purplerain101 · 07/03/2018 14:20

@twitchett don’t worry I’m sure it’s still fairly rare that they get it wrong compared to all the scans they give that they get right. A 3D one will be a lot more accurate too. Hope it all goes ok

I'm a midwife, and have only known it to happen once in the 14 years I've veen doing it! It's rare to be wrong, but definitely happens now and then!

Zaphodsotherhead · 07/03/2018 14:26

My DIL was told (and told everyone) that she was having a girl. They didn't buy a great deal of 'girl' stuff, but a few pink outfits.

When my son rang me from the hospital, he said 'you'll have to wait a while longer to meet your granddaughter.' My heart stopped, I thought something had happened to the baby! But 'she' was a lovely baby boy, and the pink clothes went back to the shop for exchange or money back.

MrsCharlesBrandon · 07/03/2018 14:28

DS was supposed to be a girl. Had many scans post 20w and not one picked up that he wasn't.

Was actually very happy as I think 3DDs would have tipped me over the edge!

Minniemagoo · 07/03/2018 14:28

Happens with DC 3 who turned out to be a boy depite numerous scans (for medical reasons) where we had been told he was a she. People didnt believe me when I texted them.
He had a lovely apple green and pink bedroom, that had been used for DD1 and DD2 for 6/7 months till we got around to redecorating.
