My sister was told she was having a girl but has just given birth to a boy...

My sister had 3 different scans by 3 different people and they all told her she was definitely having a girl. She decorated the nursery with a fairly girly design and received lots of baby girl clothes from friends and family etc. The name was picked out too.
She’s just given birth 2 hours ago and has had a baby boy. He must have had his bits tucked well away during the scans. She’s obviously still very happy and overjoyed with him but I think she’s shell shocked as she felt like she was bonding with a daughter when he was still inside her.
I’ll definitely be leaving it for a surprise when I have one as even though this outcome must be very rare, it just goes to show they don’t always get it right

Congratulations aunty! I am jealous of all the new-born baby cuddles you'll be able to have.

When I was pregnant, I knew three women who were told the wrong sex. Then my DSIS was told she was having a girl but it was a boy. That gave me the perception it was quite common for the scans to be wrong.

OutyMcOutface · 07/03/2018 14:33

We had genetic testing as well as ultrasounds-there are a lot of things that ultrasounds just don’t pick up. They are useful and important diagnostic tools but they aren’t really adequate as a stand alone measure for determining sex or looking for genetic anomalies.

I’m surprised the midwife on this post has only seen it happen once! I’m not a midwife and I’ve heard of it happening 5 times! especially with girls turning out to be boys... not so much the other way around. Woman next to me in hospital last time had the same thing happen to her, my friend from school had it happen, a woman from HE had it happen, a woman from kids old school had it happen and my mums friend had it happen.

Anyway boy and girl babies act the same way so there’s always that

Aprilmightmemynewname · 07/03/2018 14:37

I was told a girl but had a ds!! My dd was gutted - another db!! 2 scans at 20+22 weeks both said girl!! I had spent £££££ but luckily was able to send it all back!! As a 'reward' for my shock, ds slept through from a few weeks old!!

4Funnels · 07/03/2018 14:38

I'd always thought that being told you were having a girl was always less certain than a boy; you can't prove a negative type thing.

I can't wait for this thread to be picked up by all the irate "boys can wear pink, gender is a patriarchal yada yada ..." I think it'll be one to watch!

windchimesabotage · 07/03/2018 14:40

Ive been told mine is a girl at the scans but I also had a blood test which came back as 98% probability it was a girl. So I hope I do turn out to have a girl!! The boy is going to have a plethora of pink babygrows and dresses to wear if he is a boy!
Id be interested to hear if anyone had had the blood test and it had been wrong?

Elabear · 07/03/2018 14:45

It was clear with both my sons that they were definitely boys at their scans. I don't think I would have believed it 100% if I couldn't see for myself.

I'm not a blue for boys pink for girls sort of person but I think it's quite hard to find totally neutral clothes unless you go for white.

Callmegeoff · 07/03/2018 14:48

I'm a midwife. It's only happened once with me. It is rare but it does happen.

LatteLoverLovesLattes · 07/03/2018 14:49

Many years ago I had a boutique baby shop, it wasn’t unusual to have people come back to swap blue/pink, but given how much scans have improved I’m surprised it still happens with such frequency.

I don’t like to buy much until the baby is safely here but anything I do buy is ‘neutral’.

MatildaTheCat · 07/03/2018 14:50

I knew someone who had three boys and was told that her fourth baby was definitely a girl. It wasn’t. Although I usually feel that one should be absolutely grateful for a healthy baby, I did feel sorry for her. Awful if you feel totally gutted when you are expecting to be overjoyed.

Having said that it’s easier in some ways to have a troop of the same sex I imagine.

Soubriquet · 07/03/2018 14:50

No I don't know anyone who this happened to. Lucky I suppose.

I found out with my two but I was having lots of extra scans so towards the end of pregnancy, it was kind of hard NOT to see... it was very obvious when dd was laid there with her legs wide open Grin

dingdongdigeridoo · 07/03/2018 14:53

Oh wow, can't believe people get told it's a boy and then have a girl. I can see how it'd happen the other way round because it could be tucked away, but with DS they zoomed in and you could clearly see his bits.

clarabellski · 07/03/2018 14:57

I was a supposed to be a boy but the scans were not as good in the olden days! Haven't heard of it happening in recent years. Congratulations OP to you and yours

HotCrossBunFight · 07/03/2018 15:04

After hearing DS was very healthy at a late growth scan the radiologist asked if we had any more questions so we asked of he was definitely a boy. She laughed at me, said I'd been reading too many tabloids and that they never made mistakes like That!

Jboure · 07/03/2018 15:11

Does your sister have other children? Just curious.

My mother had 3 healthy girls and her fourth baby was a girl. This was 40 years ago and we laugh at some of the messages in the baby cards she kept-‘so sorry to hear the news’, ‘fingers crossed for next time’ etc...

Ffs baby girl no. 4 was healthy.

My great grandmother had 9 girls before she had the boy.

spiderlight · 07/03/2018 15:11

This happened to a friend of mine - told they were having a boy and then had a girl. It really, really threw them initially - the dad especially. They'd bought quite a bit of boy's stuff and had mentally set themselves up for a son, picked out a name etc. They were fine once they got their heads round it though.

NorbertTheDragon · 07/03/2018 15:18

When I had DS2 someone in hospital at the same time had their daughter and had been told they were having a boy.

Despite being told with 3 of mine I still bought neutral stuff. Although I had hand me downs from DS1, and would have put them on a baby of either sex. (And did get some clothes given to me that were floral, so girly I guess, but my boys still wore them.)

They always said at my scans that they can't 100% guarantee the sex.

didofido · 07/03/2018 15:19

My DD was told she was having a boy - and behold, it was a girl! The girl is now 25, and I thought scans had improved since then.

Allthebestnamesareused · 07/03/2018 15:24

My friend had a daughter and was told she was expecting girl twins. She was delighted they were wrong when she had a boy/girl twin combo.

steppemum · 07/03/2018 15:24

I have known 3. But 2 were overseas, where the scans were often not as clear.

The third was a friend who lives near me, she was told a girl and had a boy. They were amazingly laid back and took it in their stride!

I have to say, wtih dc 1 I didn't want to know, with dc2 I was ill and had last minute scans on Friday for an unexpectedly early induction on Monday (38 weeks) I was worried about baby so asked if it was girl or boy. Didn't tell anyone.

For dc3, baby and I were ill, and I had weekly scans. Dh and I decided to ask sex and name her, but we didn't tell family.

sunshinestorm · 07/03/2018 15:28

I know someone who was told boy at an early gender scan but was confirmed girl at the 20 week anomaly scan.

With my son it was just absolutely obvious on the scan, there was no way it was wrong!

Loonyluna16 · 07/03/2018 15:29

I was supposed to be a boy. Also broke a family tradition on my dad's side, I was the first, first born daughter in 150 years. Im 13 weeks pregnant just now and my spidey senses are telling me it's a boy.

sunshinestorm · 07/03/2018 15:31

I also know people who were told '85% sure it's a girl' on scans, if that happened to me I would just prepare for both and buy neutral

lightoflaluna · 07/03/2018 15:56

Wrt the girls' clothes, i had a few hand me down things from friends and relatives with Sleeping Princess and stuff on them. It hasn't stopped me using them for DS. It really doesn't matter

user1499786242 · 07/03/2018 16:14

I do think it is really rare!
Saying that, I've had 3 scans all confirming the sex but I'm still worried
My midwife said in her working life of 15 years she's only ever had it happen 3 times and not in the last 5 years
Especially if it's at these 'gender scan' places as their whole focus of the scan is finding out the sex rather than checking the babies health etc
And they also want to be extra certain otherwise their reputation and business would fail if they kept getting it wrong!

Would be very interested to see the 'potty shots' she was given as it's usually pretty obvious!
