Yesterday morning I felt queasy and knew instantly I was pregnant. DH thought I was nuts as I’ve had the Mirena for about 18months now but I just knew. I tried to see if I could still feel the strings ( I’m not very good at checking) but couldn’t, although that’s not unusual apparently. So I found a test that I bought about 2 years ago and have just done it. It’s positive isn’t it?
The thing is I really really don’t want any more babies - I already have a very large family (8dc) and I’m old. However an abortion is out of the question. I can’t believe this has happened.

I think op meant 29 years doing primary school.

italiancortado · 03/03/2018 10:27

Definitely test again -

AnnaLuna · 03/03/2018 10:31

Omg 🙈
I’ll be 45 at the primary school gates.

BrutusMcDogface · 03/03/2018 10:33

Op definitely meant 29 years at the primary school gates!! She has children old enough to be at uni, for goodness sake. She's a bit older than 29....

AutumnalTed · 03/03/2018 10:34

My mum is 49 at the primary school gates, she’s not even the oldest there Grin

Scarydinosaurs · 03/03/2018 10:35

Before you panic, please do another test. And if positive I’d call OOH to see if they can check if mirena is still in place as surely that is a concern if you are pregnant?

WreckTangled · 03/03/2018 10:37

I got pregnant with a mirena in (it was still in). I had a long thread about it on here under another name but I think it was in chat.

The gp referred me for an urgent scan, obviously it was too early to see anything, tubes looked clear though. The dr removed the coil and advised there was a higher risk of miscarriage since they removed it but it was the safest thing to do.

The pregnancy went fine and the gp who fitted the coil is still baffled as to how it happened, she said she's never had one fail before 🤷‍♀️

Sorry you're going through this op Thanks

ineedtochangemynameforthis · 03/03/2018 10:49

Tizzlebizzle- I mean having DC at primary school for 29 years

happytobemrsg · 03/03/2018 10:55

I'm so sorry OP. You should definitely try another test but you know your own body. It is absolutely your choice what you do next. One thing I just wanted to say- my brother was 21 when I was born. My mum was really worried he would be extremely embarrassed. However when I was born he was so proud & his friends were always visiting, buying me toys etc. I'm not trying to influence you at all, it's just that you said your eldest at uni would be horrified & it might not be the case. Wishing the best for you Flowers it's a horrible position to be in

Fidgety31 · 03/03/2018 11:11

Op - I have also unexpectedly just found out I’m pregnant with number 4.
My oldest is at uni and will be 21 when this one comes so I understand the never ending school run feeling.
I too am wondering how I can go back to square one and start all over again. My youngest is 8, middle one 16.

ineedtochangemynameforthis · 03/03/2018 11:12

Thank you so much for all the lovely comments. It means so much to have support. Sorry for the misunderstanding - I am currently early 40’s and will have spent 29 years at the primary school gates if I am pregnant. Yes I would be hugely embarrassed if I am but it’s not just that, there’s the obvious health worries and how I would manage such a big family with a new born. I will definitely test again later today and update.

Fidgety31 How did you feel about it and how did your eldest take the news?

Fidgety31 · 03/03/2018 11:18

I haven’t told him yet as I’ve only just found out.
I’m 42 and think I should wait a while to make sure everything’s ok before I tell my kids.
I hate the school run now - I feel destined to never leave it !!

JaneEyre70 · 03/03/2018 11:27

The Mirena can give you false positives - don't bother buying tests and get your GP to do a blood test asap. Try not to panic just yet, though easier said than done.

MynameisJune · 03/03/2018 11:29

If it is positive on a new test you need to see a GP because I think there is a higher risk of ectopic pregnancy when you have a coil fitted.

Bobbiepin · 03/03/2018 12:05

Definitely get a new test, out of date ones are so unreliable.

KochabRising · 03/03/2018 12:11

The Mirena can give you false positives

This is not correct, the mirena contains small amounts of levonorgestrel. Home pregnancy tests are specific to HCG. There is no mechanism by which an HPT can be positive from the mirena alone.

False positives can be caused by certain drugs, such as some anti convulsants, aged tests. But not by mirena alone.

LostMyBaubles · 03/03/2018 15:18

Was going to say the same.
Mirena can't give false positives

Op hope you are ok

Ubercornsdiscoball · 03/03/2018 15:22

I know quite a few people who have become pregnant due to a coil issue. Puts me off it completely. Hope you manage to get another test this weekend

CobaltRose · 03/03/2018 17:06

That is definitely positive but if the test is very out of date it may not be reliable. Definitely buy a new one and retest.

Pregnancies on the coil are rare but not unheard of. I fell pregnant on the implant (which is supposed to be as effective as the coil!).

I hope you get the result you're hoping for Flowers

ineedtochangemynameforthis · 03/03/2018 17:56

So new test done and to me this one looks negative. Do you all agree? I will try again with the second one in the morning as I wasn’t able to wait 4 or 5 hours before POS ( frequent urination being one of the symptoms convincing me I was pregnant). Anyway, feeling much less panicky right now - thank you all for the hand holds. Still feeling nauseous ( especially to the smell of bacon cooking) funny taste in my mouth, tender breasts and needing to pee every 45 mins so am slightly sceptical of the result but I will do a best of 3 tomorrow Grin
Thank you lovely mumsnetters

It looks negative to me, but it took a week for me to get a positive on a clear blue test. First urine of the day is the most naturally concentrated so I would try that and if still neg repeat again in a few days, especially if you have other symptoms still.

Slightlyperturbedowlagain · 03/03/2018 18:04

(And FWIW I will still be at primary school gates until I’m 51, and I’m not the oldest)

LauraO1905 · 03/03/2018 18:05

Looks negative to me!

If it's still negative after FMU then big sigh of relief. But I would speak to GP about your symptoms as they could be something else if not pregnancy

happytobemrsg · 03/03/2018 18:09

Sorry if you've already said - you you know what dpo you might be or if you're late?
