How early do I need to be thinking about my sleeping position?

I'm coming up 12 weeks but when I sleep on my belly Im already uncomfortable and something tells me to roll over onto my side. Do I need to worry about how I sleep at this stage? or does it not matter until later on? thanks

The advice to sleep on your side is from the third trimester. It's to do with a theory about baby compressing it's blood supply.
At 12 weeks he's still tiny so you're fine to sleep however you're most comfortable.

Ah great thanks @zaalitje :) I was worried because my tummy was uncomfortable when I woke up on my front but its good to know it wont harm bub

Just sleep how you’re comfortable. You won’t hurt your baby by lying on your stomach and at some point you won’t be able to anyway.

I’m glad you asked this OP as I too have been wondering. I only ever sleep on my tummy so it’s going to be bloody hard when I reach the third tri. I think I’m going to get a ‘u’ shaped pillow to stop me from rolling over.

I think by then, your bump will stop you from rolling over! Grin

I have one of those massive pillows to go between legs to support bump and hips; it makes it so much more comfortable to sleep (until you want to switch sides....Hmm)

You can google it to check but my understanding from my midwife is the advice is not to sleep on your back from 16 weeks. I'm not sure about tummy but like pps say, it will kind of become impossible at some point anyway. The recent research published regarding stillbirth used women in third trimester but I believe it becomes an issue earlier that blood flow to baby is less optimal when not on your side. I'm also 12 weeks and same as you when sleeping anywhere but my side I have a feeling I need to roll over. Doesn't stop me waking on my back but just roll over when that happens. Yes pillows are your friend!!
